Action committee questions construction cost of houses

Kozhikode: The Janashabdam Action Committee for Wayanad landslide victims has waded into the controversy over the cost of the houses being constructed at the township coming up at Elstone Estate for the landslide survivors saying that the model house does not seem to have cost Rs 30 lakh as claimed by govt authorities. Action committee chairperson Nazeer Alakkal said that it is not proper to reap profits on the disaster front. "The people who are in the beneficiary list and are awaiting houses at the township are very concerned over the controversy. Just look at the 1,250sqft house provided by Kerala Police Association at a cost of Rs 23 lakh. If the landslide survivors were provided Rs 30 lakh, we would have built a 2,000sqft house," Alakkal said. He said that it has been specifically mentioned in the law that disaster rehabilitation efforts should be carried out only after consultations with the victims. "Even the court has said that. But here what consultations have been carried out with us? The district collector should immediately convene a meeting of the people in the beneficiary list and hear their suggestions. We had told the collector that the stairs from the ground floor should be provided from inside the house but in the model house it has been provisioned from outside," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Also, the beneficiaries have raised concerns over the metal awning above the window instead of a proper concrete sunshade saying that it could lead to water seepage in the monsoon. Congress leaders had said that the model house should not have cost Rs 30 lakh. However, Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), which took up the project, said each house cost Rs 22 lakh to build and with 18% tax, the final price would be Rs 25.9 lakh. Action committee convener Shajimon Chooralmala said that even the construction cost of Rs 23 lakh claimed by ULCCS seemed to be exaggerated as construction costs won't work out to that figure with around 400 houses being built. "Also, we want to have the tiled roofed portion in the front replaced with concrete roofing and the stairs should be provided from inside the house," he said.

Protesters stage protest over delay in payment of rent

Kozhikode: The survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide , under the aegis of the Janashabdam Action Committee, organised a march to the Vythiri taluk office to protest the delay in the payment of rent assistance to the survivors at 10am on Monday. Many of the affected families said that it was already 19 days into May, but govt's rent payments were yet to be credited. Around 600 landslide survivors used to receive a monthly rental amount as part of the rehabilitation efforts of the state govt. The action committee had announced the stir on May 15 but called off the protest after the govt provided one month's financial assistance of Rs 9000. "But the non-payment of rent hit the survivors hard and we were left with no option but to take out a protest march to the taluk office," said Shajimon Chooralmala, convenor of the action committee. The march witnessed tense moments as protesters tried to break the police cordon. Vythiri tahasildar Bindu came to the spot and held talks with the protesters. The Wayanad district collector also took up the matter with the state govt and assured the protesters that the rent payment would be made as soon as the district administration received the funds from the govt. By around 2pm, the rent amount was deposited in the bank accounts, following which the protest was called off.

Wayanad landslide survivors yet to get rent amount in May

Kozhikode: Adding to the woes of Chooralmala-Mundakkai landslide survivors who are living in rented accommodation, the state govt has not paid its rent assistance to these people this month. Many of the affected families said it is already 11 days into May, but govt's rent payments are yet to be credited into their bank accounts. Around 600 landslide survivors used to get a monthly rental amount as part of the rehabilitation efforts of the state govt."Usually, the landslide survivors used to receive rent payments in their bank account on the sixth of every month. But this month it has not been deposited yet. The homeowners are asking for rents from the survivors and it has led to unpleasant talks between survivors and homeowners," said Janashabdam Action Committee convener Shajimon to sources in the district administration, the delay in rent payments is due to insufficient funds in the govt account as the available funds in that account were recently used to facilitate the govt's takeover of Elstone Estate where the township project for landslide survivors is coming up. They said that the state govt was made aware of this situation two weeks survivors also gave vent to their frustration over non-resumption of the daily relief payment, a sum of Rs 300 which was discontinued a month after the disaster, despite govt orders to reinstate it. Also, many landslide survivors are concerned over the delay in publishing the final list of beneficiaries for the rehabilitation project. While district disaster management authority had drawn up a beneficiary list comprising 402 families and forwarded it to the state govt, the final list has not been published. It is learnt that the district administration has recommended inclusion of around 50 persons in the final Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society, which has been tasked with the construction of the proposed township at Elstone Estate, said the works are progressing at the site.
