Vitalant offers gift cards for August blood donors — here's how to sign up

SHILOH — Upcoming blood drives want to boost donations as summer activities and back-to-school preparations continue. According to a community announcement, Vitalant encourages eligible donors to give blood in August to help maintain a steady supply for patients in need. Donors who participate between Aug. 1 and Aug. 28 and are enrolled in Vitalant Donor Rewards will receive a $10 gift card and enter a drawing for one of three $10,000 gift cards in the Summer Gas Giveaway. Vitalant states that all blood types are needed, with a particular emphasis on type O and platelet donors. Type O blood can assist most patients in emergencies, while platelets are critical for cancer patients and those experiencing severe bleeding, according to the announcement. One upcoming blood drive will take place from 3-6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Planktown Market, 1921 Free Road, in Shiloh. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Bucyrus District is continuing to hold open houses this summer while the deadline to apply for its next cadet class is fast approaching. According to an announcement, community members and media can tour the facility, meet personnel and see equipment and vehicles. The Bucyrus District serves Crawford, Erie, Huron, Marion, Ottawa, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca and Wyandot counties. Open houses remaining include the Mansfield Post on July 25 and the Marion Post on Aug. 8. Both will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking for service-minded individuals to join its ranks. The Patrol offers a career path for those who are leaders, communicators, technology enthusiasts, or have a passion for helping others. Graduates from the academy will be assigned to a Patrol post within 50 air-miles of their residence, allowing them to stay close to family and friends. According to an announcement, the American Association of State Troopers hosts the annual contest where state police agencies submit photos of their patrol vehicles. The top 13 photos, determined by the public, will be featured in the AAST's annual calendar. This contest promotes friendly competition among law enforcement agencies nationwide and helps agencies connect with their communities. The Patrol's cruiser, along with the Flying Wheel logo, symbolizes its commitment to providing unbiased and professional public safety services, according to the announcement. Free Clyde concert brings bluegrass and country to museum lawn

CLYDE — The Muleskinner Band will perform at the Clyde Museum on June 13. According to an announcement, the concert will take place from 6 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. on the museum lawn at 124 W. Buckeye St. The event will feature traditional and modern country and bluegrass music. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. West Buckeye Street will be closed for the concert, allowing for more seating options. Admission is free; while donations are appreciated, they are not required. A food truck, Nana's Kitchen, will be on-site offering hot food and cold drinks, including Mexican cuisine. Concert-goers are advised to arrive early to secure good seating as the concert will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Parking will be available in several locations, including the alleyway parking lots behind the museum, on-street parking on Main Street, the downtown plaza on Railroad Street and the large parking lot at Edward Jones at the corner of West Buckeye and George streets. Need a ride to Final Fridays? Mansfield's free shuttle comes to your door

Richland County Transit will offer free rides for Final Fridays in downtown Mansfield. According to an announcement, the service will run from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 30, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29 and Sept. 26. RCT drivers will provide door-to-door rides in small buses, similar to Dial-A-Ride. The service area will include most of Lexington, Ontario and Madison Township, along with all of Mansfield. Rides must start or end at the pickup location on North Diamond Street near the Brickyard. To schedule a pickup, call RCT at 419-522-4504. Advance reservations are encouraged, but same-day requests may be accommodated based on availability. The Final Friday shuttle service is supported by RCT and the City of Mansfield.
