Agencies sought to use emergency food, shelter funds

Local agencies are being sought to use a federal $18,245 grant for emergency food and shelter programs. McLeod County has been awarded the money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. A local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county. The board is made up of representatives of United Way, Red Cross, churches, organizations and government agencies. Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government, 2) are eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and /or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. McLeod County has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with Heartland Community Action Agency and McLeod Emergency Food Shelf participating. These agencies were responsible for providing meals and emergency rent/mortgage payments. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for the funds must contact person Janet Vacek, HCAA 218 Main St. S., Suite 108 Hutchinson, MN 55350 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is June 22.
