Soccer-Sevilla fans storm training ground after 3-2 defeat at Celta Vigo
(Reuters) -A group Sevilla fans stormed the club's training complex following their 3-2 defeat at Celta Vigo on Saturday, tearing down an access gate as tensions escalated, with the loss leaving the team just two places clear of the drop zone in LaLiga. The seven-times Europa League champions are 16th with 38 points from 35 games, well off the European places. After Sevilla suffered their 15th defeat of the season at the Estadio Balaidos, hundreds of fans gathered outside the club's facilities, waiting for the players to return in a show of anger. While the police and the club's security team contained the attempted breach, local reports have said the team will remain at the training ground overnight to avoid the enraged crowd. Reuters contacted Sevilla for comment. Sevilla are set to resume training on Sunday ahead of hosting relegation-threatened Las Palmas on Tuesday. Soccer-Club Leon out of Club World Cup as CAS rejects appeal
(Adds playoff confirmation by FIFA) May 6 (Reuters) - Mexico's Club Leon will not participate in this year's Club World Cup after losing their appeal on Tuesday having been removed from the tournament by FIFA due to an ownership rule breach. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeal by Leon who had qualified by winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2023. FIFA said in March that Club Leon and another Mexican club in the tournament, Pachuca, did not meet regulations on multi-club ownership. Pachuca's spot in the competition was unaffected. "This is the greatest damage done to a team that has always competed with humility and honesty," Leon said in a statement. "The only thing left for us is to win again to regain the place on the field that was taken from us. Have no doubt, as long as no one prevents us from doing so again, we will do it." The expanded 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States with $1 billion in prize money at stake. Apart from the winners of each confederation's premier club competition, teams also qualified due to their ranking based on their performances over a four-year period. FIFA confirmed later on Tuesday that Los Angeles FC and Club America would contest a playoff match to decide who would replace Leon in Group D at the tournament. Los Angeles were runners-up to Leon in the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup, while Mexico's record winners America were the top-ranked team in the Club World Cup confederation ranking at the conclusion of the 2024 edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup. "Further details in relation to the play-off match, including information on the date, venue, kick-off time and ticket sales, will be communicated in due course," FIFA added in a statement. Soccer-CONMEBOL imposes closed-door matches on Colo Colo after deadly Copa Libertadores incident
ASUNCION (Reuters) -Chile's Colo Colo will have to play five home games behind closed doors and five away matches without visiting fans, CONMEBOL said on Wednesday, after two fans were killed earlier this month in a crush during a Copa Libertadores match. The incident occurred on April 10, when home fans attempted to force their way into the Monumental Stadium in Santiago ahead of Colo Colo's Group E match against Brazilian side Fortaleza. The match was abandoned after 70 minutes following a stampede where a 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were crushed to death by a collapsing fence. The disciplinary unit of the South American soccer's governing body had provisionally banned fans from attending Colo Colo matches while it deliberated on the final sanctions. The Santiago-based team have also been fined $80,000, and CONMEBOL awarded a 3–0 victory to Fortaleza for the suspended second matchday fixture of the group stage of South America's top club tournament. The result leaves them bottom of the group on two points, two behind third-placed Fortaleza. Colombia's Atletico Bucaramanga are leaders with five points, one ahead of Argentine side Racing Club.
