Soccer-CONMEBOL imposes closed-door matches on Colo Colo after deadly Copa Libertadores incident

The Star01-05-2025

ASUNCION (Reuters) -Chile's Colo Colo will have to play five home games behind closed doors and five away matches without visiting fans, CONMEBOL said on Wednesday, after two fans were killed earlier this month in a crush during a Copa Libertadores match.
The incident occurred on April 10, when home fans attempted to force their way into the Monumental Stadium in Santiago ahead of Colo Colo's Group E match against Brazilian side Fortaleza.
The match was abandoned after 70 minutes following a stampede where a 13-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were crushed to death by a collapsing fence.
The disciplinary unit of the South American soccer's governing body had provisionally banned fans from attending Colo Colo matches while it deliberated on the final sanctions.
The Santiago-based team have also been fined $80,000, and CONMEBOL awarded a 3–0 victory to Fortaleza for the suspended second matchday fixture of the group stage of South America's top club tournament.
The result leaves them bottom of the group on two points, two behind third-placed Fortaleza. Colombia's Atletico Bucaramanga are leaders with five points, one ahead of Argentine side Racing Club.

Harimau Malaya captain warns of Vietnam danger despite missing hitmen

KUALA LUMPUR: National captain Matthew Davies urged Harimau Malaya not to underestimate Vietnam despite their rivals being without two of their star forwards for Tuesday's Asian Cup Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Vietnam will be without naturalised Brazilian striker Nguyen Xuan Son, who has netted seven goals in five appearances, and Nguyen Cong Phuong, who has bagged 12 goals from 56 caps. Both are ruled out through injury. But Davies insists Malaysia must stay focused on themselves rather than who Vietnam are missing. "We need to be at our best and ready for all possibilities," said the defender at Monday's pre-match press conference. "The biggest difference under Peter (Cklamovski) is our emphasis on team play." "We're not thinking about the absence of their key players because Vietnam will have quality replacements. It's better we concentrate on our own preparation. We know their quality." Davies also revealed the five new heritage players — Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado, Joao Figueiredo, Facundo Garces and Jon Irazabal — have started settling in with the rest of the squad since reporting for centralised training last week. "There were some communication issues at first — language barriers and such," said Davies. "But for us, wearing the jersey is a big responsibility, and we take it seriously." "All we can ask from the new boys is that they show the same pride, love and commitment for the national team. The quality is there. They've proven themselves abroad but integration will take time." "We shouldn't judge them any differently from any other player wearing the Malaysian jersey. What matters is they give 100 per cent."

Brentford star Wissa scores in Congolese victory

JOHANNESBURG: Brentford striker Yoane Wissa was among the goals as the Democratic Republic of Congo beat Madagascar 3-1 on Sunday in a warm-up match for 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The 28-year-old, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season for the Bees, struck after 33 minutes with a close-range shot that beat goalkeeper Sonny Laiton at his near post. Earlier, Turkey-based Simon Banza had put the Congolese ahead, and he scored again midway through the second half in French city Orleans. El Hadary Raheriniaina reduced the arrears in added time for Madagascar, who lie 54 places below DR Congo in the world rankings. DR Congo are one point ahead of Senegal and Sudan in a World Cup qualifying group and will have home advantage over both rivals later this year. They are hoping to return to the global football showpiece for the first time since 1974. The country was called Zaire then and they suffered a humiliating 9-0 drubbing from Yugoslavia in a group match. Veteran Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes calmly converted an 80th-minute penalty to earn the tiny west African island nation a 1-1 draw against Georgia in Kutaisi. Cape Verde, who came to the Caucasus after a three-goal victory over Malaysia, had fallen behind in first half added time when Saba Lobjanidze scored off a far-post header. Reigning African champions the Ivory Coast fielded an experimental side against 2026 World Cup qualifiers New Zealand and lost 1-0 in Toronto. The Ivorians had looked the likelier team to score in the first half only to fall behind on 41 minutes when Elijah Just struck. Benni McCarthy, a former Manchester United first-team coach, is still seeking his first victory in charge of Kenya after a 0-0 draw with Chad in Moroccan city Marrakesh. The scorer of a record 32 goals for South Africa during a playing career that included spells in the Premier League and La Liga, has drawn twice and lost once since being appointed this year. - AFP

Cklamovski's secret 'heritage' weapons primed to strike against Vietnam

KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya will be looking to break their 11-year winless streak against Vietnam when they clash in a crunch Asian Cup Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (9pm). Malaysia have lost seven and drawn one in their last eight meetings with the Golden Star Warriors since their last victory in the 2014 AFF Cup, now rebranded as the Asean Cup. But head coach Peter Cklamovski is banking on his new batch of heritage players — many of whom hail from South America and Europe — to tilt the balance in favour of the hosts. Among the fresh faces expected to feature are Argentines Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado and Facundo Garces, Brazilian Joao Figueiredo, and Jon Irazabal. All have trained behind closed doors, with both training sessions and the recent friendly against Cape Verde kept under wraps. Also in the squad are Hector Hevel and Gabriel Palmero, who joined up with the national team in March following Cklamovski's appointment. "We have the mentality to win every game we play," said Cklamovski at Monday's pre-match press conference. "There's a little bit of detail around the fact that Malaysia haven't beaten Vietnam in over 10 years — but instead of fearing that, we see it as a challenge. We want to create history, and that's the opportunity in front of us. "I'm very happy with the squad and excited to deliver a good performance. The new boys have shown pride in every training session, and we're building a family atmosphere in this team. We're focused and ready." Cklamovski brushed off suggestions that secrecy surrounding his squad had created distraction. "If anything, the noise is for you guys (in the media). Internally, we're focused. We work on being a strong team, and that's what we do every day." Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik, meanwhile, admitted that his side have little information on Malaysia's new-look squad but is urging his team to concentrate on themselves. "This could be the most important and difficult match in our path to the Asian Cup," said Sang Sik. "If Vietnam play as a unit and execute our attacking tactics, we can get the points. Away games are never easy, but our preparation has been good. "Whether we know a lot about the new players or not, the result depends on how we perform. There's pressure, but I choose to think positively. We will give our all."
