Turtles turn the tide after coach Badrul's halftime call

The Stara day ago
PETALING JAYA: A simple halftime reminder proved the spark for Terengganu's dominant 3-0 win over Penang in their Super League opener on Sunday.
In a rain-soaked encounter at the City Stadium in Georgetown, the first half was lively but goalless, with the Turtles carving out numerous openings through French striker Yan Mabella and Brazilian winger Gabriel Silva.
Penang goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid produced a string of excellent saves, while both teams were denied potential penalties by referee Khairulsyahmi Ahmad Khalidi.
At the break, Terengganu coach Badrul Afzan Razali kept his message clear – be patient.
'I reminded the boys to be a bit more patient in the second half.
'We had the ball, so we just needed to make quick attacks and play the right through passes.
'We worked well as a unit and deserved the win,' said Badrul.
The response was instant. Four minutes into the second half, centreback Safwan Mazlan split the defence with a pass to Azam Azmi Murad, who fired low past Khairulazhan.
Six minutes later, Mabella found Silva, whose toe-poke made it 2-0.
Badrul then rotated his attack to keep players fresh, a move that paid off when substitute Khala'if Naskam scored with his first touch in the 88th minute, latching onto fellow substitute Baqiuddin Shamsuddin's through ball.
'Khala'if came in and scored — it was perfect for us,' Badrul said.
The win gave Terengganu a flying start to their campaign, while Penang coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail admitted his side 'lost rhythm' after the interval.
Terengganu next host Police in Gong Badak tomorrow, while Penang face Melaka in Hang Jebat.

Chengdu and Al-Duhail secure spots in Asian Champions League Elite

Chinese Super League side Chengdu Rongcheng defeated Bangkok United 3-0 to qualify for the league phase of the Asian Champions League Elite on Tuesday, while Qatar's Al-Duhail downed Sepahan from Iran 3-2 in Al-Rayyan to also advance. Brazilian striker Felipe scored twice after Yang Ming-yang's header had given Chengdu a 68th minute lead to see off the Thai side, ensuring coach Seo Jung-won and his team will be included in Friday's draw for the league phase in Kuala Lumpur. Yang met Romulo's corner to put Chengdu in front and Felipe doubled the lead three minutes later as he latched onto a ball over the top of the Bangkok United defence. Felipe added the third with six minutes remaining at the end of another incisive counterattack. Al-Duhail, meanwhile, came back from going behind to a third minute close-range strike by Amin Hazbavi to progress. Ibrahima Bamba powered his header into the top corner in the 11th minute to level the scores and Adil Boulbina put his side in front 13 minutes later with a stunning strike past Seyed Hossein Hosseini. Krzysztof Piatek hit Al-Duhail's third in the 33rd minute at the end of a rapid break and the Qatari side held on despite conceding in the 93rd minute, when Milan Zakipour netted from close range. Twenty-four clubs will compete in the league phase of the Asian Champions League Elite when it returns in September, with the participants split evenly into western and eastern leagues. The top eight finishers on each side of the confederation will advance to the knockout rounds with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final due to be played centrally in Saudi Arabia next April and May.-REUTERS

Donnarumma confirms imminent departure from PSG after being axed by Luis Enrique

UDINE: Gianluigi Donnarumma confirmed his imminent departure from Paris St Germain after he was effectively axed from the squad by manager Luis Enrique, who left the Italian keeper out of the Super Cup line-up. Donnarumma played an instrumental role in PSG's treble-winning campaign last season, helping them to finally win the Champions League for the first time. However, the 26-year-old, who joined the club in 2021, has now been left out in the cold. PSG signed French keeper Lucas Chevalier on Saturday, fuelling speculation about Donnarumma's future, and with one year left on his contract, the Italian is now set to move on. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," Donnarumma posted on social media on Tuesday. "I am disappointed and disheartened." The keeper's omission from the PSG squad to face Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday was the main focus of the manager's press conference. "These are always hard decisions to make. I can only say good things about Gianluigi Donnarumma," Luis Enrique told reporters. "He is one of the best players in his position, without any doubt. He is even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of keeper. "Bearing in mind the level of Gianluigi Donnarumma and everything he has given to the club, of course we understand the situation but my aim is to improve the team and I have tried to do that in the best way possible." Italian reporters were understandably more concerned with the Donnarumma situation than with the match against Spurs, but the PSG manager soon grew tired of the subject. "No more questions on this. It is my decision, it is the club's decision and the club backs me," Luis Enrique said. "We now need to find the best solution for all parties." Donnarumma's next club has yet to be decided, and the keeper would like the chance to bid farewell to the PSG supporters. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma wrote. "If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. "Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you Paris." PSG captain Marquinhos also spoke about the Donnarumma situation during his press conference. "It is always difficult. I have been here for 12 or 13 years and I have seen other players go through the same thing," the Brazilian defender said. "Life is like that and football is like that. One day I will leave as well, I hope it will be in the best possible conditions but players come and go and the club remains, the fans remain, and history remains. "We don't know if he is going to leave or stay. If he stays of course we will welcome him back with open arms. "Because what he did last season was incredible and it is thanks to him that we reached the final and we won the trophy. But if he has to leave we will thank him."

TRW coach Elavarasan warns KL City will be tough FA Cup opponents

KELANTAN THE REAL WARRIORS (TRW) head coach E. Elavarasan expects a difficult FA Cup clash against Kuala Lumpur City (KL City) FC. He pointed to their recent 1-1 Super League draw with Immigration FC as proof of their attacking struggles. 'They (KL City) are among the strongest and most experienced teams in the FA Cup, and they will not be easy for us to beat,' Elavarasan told reporters. He stressed the need to improve finishing after wasted chances against Immigration. 'In the match against Immigration, many chances were wasted by our strikers, who were hesitant to finish when opportunities arose,' he added. Elavarasan confirmed training will focus on sharpening their attack before the FA Cup tie. Meanwhile, Immigration head coach Yusri Che Lah acknowledged their own tough FA Cup path against Terengganu FC. 'Our journey is a very difficult one — first we face Terengganu FC, then we will meet Kuching City FC and Johor Darul Ta'zim,' he said. Yusri praised Terengganu's squad stability and foreign signings as key strengths. He believes Immigration's cohesion is improving ahead of their FA Cup test. - Bernama
