Shashi Tharoor asks why Kerala didn't celebrate Janmashthami on August 16: No ‘different Christmas'

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor questioned on Sunday, August 17, as to why Keralites didn't celebrate Janmashthami on August 16. In a post on X, Tharoor said, "Yesterday, 16th Aug, 2025 (Saturday), was celebrated as Bhagwan Sri Krishna #Janmashthami across India — except in the state of Kerala!" He mentioned that the "Malayalam calendar shows this year's Janmashthami date as 14th Sept, 2025(Sunday), NOT yesterday." Tharoor asked people to "enlighten" him as to why this is so. "Surely even a Bhagwan can't be born on two different days six weeks apart!," he said. "Is there a case for rationalising the dates of religious holidays so that all adherents of a faith can celebrate with their fellow believers at the same time? After all, Keralites don't observe a different Christmas!," Tharoor noted. An X user explained Tharoor why Janmashthami in Kerala fell on a different date than rest of the country. He said, 'Most of India follows the Purnimanta calendar (lunar month ending with the full moon) or the Amanta calendar (lunar month ending with the new moon) for determining festival dates.' "Janmashtami, celebrating Lord Krishna's birth, is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada or Shravana, depending on the region," he added. The X user went on to explain that in Kerala, 'the Malayalam calendar (solar calendar) is used alongside lunar calculations, and local traditions also prioritise a specific astrological configuration of the Rohini Nakshatra (the star associated with Krishna's birth) or the precise timing Janmashtami's date is determined by the Ashtami tithi (lunar day) and the presence of Rohini Nakshatra at midnight, as Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight.' "In Kerala the presence of Rohini Nakshatra along with the Ashtami tithi is mandatory to determine the birthdate of Krishna whereas in other states it is not so," he added. Most parts of the country celebrated Janmashthami on August 16.

Janmashtami 2025: 5 Stylish Krishna-Radha Inspired Outfits To Try This Festive Season

Last Updated: Janmashtami outfit ideas 2025: Get inspired by Lord Krishna and Radha with 5 divine looks featuring peacock hues, floral fits, flowy fabrics, and golden accessories. Janmashthami Outfit Ideas 2025: Janmashthami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is observed in many parts of India, including Mathura, Vrindavan, and Dwarka. This year, the auspicious festival falls on August 16. You must be eager to seek blessings at temples, attend bhajans, or participate in cultural activities. So, here's a curated list of Lord Krishna and Radha-inspired fashion looks that will help you dress in tune with the divine spirit. Peacock Silhouettes Lord Krishna is synonymous with peacocks. So why not take that as an inspiration and incorporate the nature-themed style in your OOTD choice? Women can choose from ample saree collections, while men can rock a peacock-inspired traditional avatar. Floral Fits Janmashthami is incomplete without flowers, especially Lord Krishna and Radha's embellished jhula (swing). So, you can choose floral-coded ethnic suits for the special occasion to mirror the festival's vibrant charm. You can either opt for soft pastels or bold patterns, keeping the flower theme in mind. Blue-Yellow Fusion Outfits Lord Krishna's signature blue complexion with the deity's rich yellow flute can be your sartorial inspiration for Janmashthami. Slip into a blue top and pair it with yellow bottoms. Make sure that if your top is bright, then your bottoms should be in a mellow hue and vice versa. A blue and yellow co-ord set with peacock prints would be perfect. Blue Outfit With Golden Accessories Another way to amp up your Janmashthami look is by reaching out for your favourite blue ethnic set and teaming up the monochrome fit with golden ornaments — be it jewellery for women or menswear accessories. After all, nothing beats the magic of contrasts Flowy Numbers You must have seen devotees dressing up Lord Radha and Krishna in flowy numbers, also known as Pitambara. You too can embrace the gracefully divine style by leaning on breezy fabrics such as georgette, silk or chiffon in hues of gold or blue and stay true to the tradition.
