Free meds, treatment at Ayurvedic research centre in Kashi

Varanasi: Treatment for arthritis-related diseases is in progress at the arthritis treatment and advanced research centre, established in govt Ayurvedic College, Chowkaghat. It is first centre in the region with facilities ranging from outpatient services to research. Due to affordable and effective treatment, 5,911 patients were treated in seven months. Govt has revived ancient Ayurvedic medical system in the state. According to Prof Manish Mishra, nodal officer of the research centre, approximately 350 patients visit the hospital's outpatient department daily, with 50 to 60 patients seeking treatment specifically for arthritis. He said patients receive free medication related to arthritis. Modern equipment is also used for treatment. Since its inception in Sep 2024, 5,911 patients who have visited till April 30, include 2,571 female and 3,340 male patients. He said the centre provides 19 special types of arthritis medicines free of charge. Additionally, special treatments like Panchakarma, Nadi Sweda, Kati Basti, Janu Basti, Greeva Basti, Agni Karma, Viddha Karma, cupping and Marma therapy are offered. Patients receive advice for regular practice of yoga, exercise, and a balanced diet. The first arthritis treatment centre was established as a pilot project in 2021 at Govt Postgraduate Ayurvedic College in Lucknow. Seeing its benefits, state govt has started it in all eight govt Ayurvedic colleges in the state. Prof Mishra said arthritis used to affect mostly those over 60 years old, but due to lifestyle, diet and irregular routines, symptoms now trouble people around the age of 40, so number of patients was increasing.
