Vehicle thief arrested with 15 stolen bikes worth 8L
Pune: Chakan police recently arrested a vehicle thief from Parner taluka in Ahilyanagar district and recovered 15 stolen motorcycles worth Rs8.30 lakh from him. The accused, Ashok Sonawane (45), stole 14 motorcycles parked in the Chakan MIDC area and one each from Wadgaon Maval and Shikrapur in the district.
A Chakan police team led by assistant police inspector Prasanna Jarhad traced Sonawane after checking over 200 CCTV cameras. "We detected 16 cases and recovered 15 stolen motorcycles from Sonawane," Jarhad told TOI.
The officer said that in the recent past, the Chakan police received many complaints about the thefts of motorcycles from the parking lots in the MIDC areas. He and his team visited all the spots and carried out a minute study.
"While checking CCTV footage, we ascertained the identity of Sonawane, who was captured while stealing a motorcycle," the officer said.

Jarhad said that he got a tip-off about Sonawane and took him into custody from Ahilyanagar district along with a stolen motorcycle. "During the questioning, Sonawane admitted to stealing as many as 16 motorcycles, of which 14 were from Chakan," Jarhad said.
He said that Sonawane used to carry a duplicate key with him.
He used to come to Chakan and check the ignitions of the motorcycles parked in the parking lots along the road in the MIDC areas. "He used to find at least one motorcycle with some faulty ignition. By using the duplicate key, he started the motorcycle and drove it away," he said.
Jarhad said that Sonawane gave these stolen motorcycles to the farmers in the interior parts of Ahilyanagar district at throwaway prices from Rs1,000 to Rs10,000. "Our police constables Sharad Khairnar, Sunil Shinde, and Shivaji Chakan visited those interior parts and recovered 15 stolen motorcycles," Jarhad said.
