Rise surprise AFC Toronto with 1-0 NSL road win
TORONTO - Jessica De Filippo pounced on a misplayed ball in the first minute of the second half to score the winning goal as the short-handed Vancouver Rise surprised first-place AFC Toronto 1-0 in Northern Super League action at BMO Field on Sunday. Despite playing one player short for the entire second half — Jasmyne Spencer was ejected from the match for fouls in the 29th and 39th minutes — the visitors were able to contain the Toronto offence.

Rise goalkeeper Morgan McAslan made five saves to record the clean sheet. Vancouver improved to 6-5-5, while Toronto slipped to 10-6-2. Toronto controlled possession for 54 per cent of the match, but were outshot 12-9, including 6-5 on-target. Toronto took eight of the match's 10 corners. Vancouver's veteran Spencer scores winner as Rise stem the Tides for their second NSL win
The Rise was greater than the Tides in the inaugural cross-coast battle in the Northern Super League. Defender Jasmyne Spencer scored in the 53rd minute on Monday night to lift the Vancouver Rise to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium. With the win the Rise record improved to two wins with one loss, both wins have come at home, while winless Halifax slips to 0-and-2. The Rise controlled possession 58 per cent of the match and outshot the visitors 9-6 in goal attempts while Vancouver had the edge in shots on target, 2-1. Vancouver's Morgan McAslan registered the shutout, the second of the season as the Rise won their first game 1-0 against Calgary to open the season. Spencer's goal was a boon for the Rise getting production from a defender. The veteran, from Bay Shore New York, has previously played for the OL Reign, Orlando Pride, Western New York Flash, Angel City FC and Washington Spirit in the NWSL. The Rise had a significant advantage in attacking play, they notched 11 corners compared to the Tides' two. One of the few areas Halifax had the edge was in cautions by the referee, notching three of four yellow cards doled out on the night. The Rise are second in the early-season standings with six points, three behind undefeated Montreal.
