Should NFL stars play Olympic flag football? Jason Kelce has a bold and old-school solution

As Olympic flag football talks taking the news headlines for its much-anticipated debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, a new debate has been ignited—one that's been simmering beneath the surface since the sport's inclusion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Who exactly should represent the United States on this global stage: world-class NFL stars or battle-hardened professional flag football athletes? Jason Kelce has a solid idea. Jason Kelce's proposal to determine NFL players' Olympic worth is too bold to ignore The conversation took an unexpected twist thanks to former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, who floated a wild yet captivating idea during the latest New Heights podcast episode with his brother, Travis Kelce. His solution? A high-stakes, winner-take-all showdown between NFL players and elite flag football professionals. Inside the NFL Owner's Meeting + Gretzky on Ovechkin's Scoring Record, GOATs & NHL Playoffs | EP 141 "Let's just have a flag football team of NFL players play these guys and see if they can win," Kelce suggested. 'May the best team win... I think a coach that is familiar with flag football should select an NFL-represented team. And that team should just play this flag football team that's been playing for a long time and feels like they are the best at it and they don't need other guys. Then whoever wins (goes to the Olympics). " It's a proposal as simple as it is brilliant. At its core, it's more than just a game—it's a solution to a problem that doesn't yet have a clear answer. Should Olympic rosters favor experience in the flag football format or raw athleticism and name recognition from the NFL? Kelce's idea is tailor-made for drama. Picture a squad of NFL giants—freak athletes trained in the highest levels of American football—taking the field against flag football veterans who've spent their lives mastering the speed, finesse, and strategy required by the non-contact version of the game. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the NFL players might have the edge in physicality and agility, flag football isn't just tackle football without the hits. It demands different instincts, quicker decisions, and a mastery of spacing and evasion that even NFL pros might find disorienting. This hypothetical clash could deliver not just answers but entertainment gold. 'The Longest Yard' comparisons are unavoidable—except in this case, the underdogs are professionals in their own right, armed with experience and chemistry. Meanwhile, the NFL players would be the 'fish out of water,' navigating unfamiliar terrain where pure athletic dominance may not guarantee victory. Of course, one can't ignore the elephant in the room: injury risk. More practices, more reps, more exposure—all increase the chance of something going wrong for active NFL stars. But as Kelce implied, if they lose the qualifier, the issue becomes moot. They wouldn't be playing in the Olympics anyway. In a landscape where debates often stall over logistics and legacy, Jason Kelce's pitch provides a thrilling, competitive, and media-friendly path forward. The question is—will the powers that be dare to make it happen? Also Read:

Jason Kelce poses putting flag football players to test over Olympics drama: 'Confident they're not the best'

After NFL owners approved players to play flag football at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics in 2028 earlier this month, players and fans alike have been dreaming about the potential squad the United States could have. However, U.S. men's flag football national team quarterback, Darrell Doucette III, has been firm in his belief that flag football players should not be put aside just because NFL players are now allowed to participate. Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce proposed an idea that would help determine which players, flag football or NFL, would represent Team USA in the Olympics. "Let's just have these (flag football) guys play an NFL team that's picked and may the best team win and represent the USA," Kelce said during a recent episode of "New Heights." "I think a coach that is familiar with flag football should select an NFL-represented team. That team should just play this flag football team that's been playing for a long time and feels like they are the best at it, and they don't need other guys. Then whoever wins (goes to the Olympics)." Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce wondered whether Doucette is "afraid" of NFL competition. "Is this guy afraid of competition?" Travis said. "Have a tryout, and the best players make the team. He's just boxing out other people from joining the sport because they haven't played the specific style of football?" The United States, led by Doucette, sat on top of the world flag football rankings last year. Regardless of their rankings, Jason is "really confident" that NFL players would be better. "If these guys are the best, they should represent (Team) USA," Jason said. "I don't know anything about flag football, but I feel really confident they're not the best." Two Eagles legends are predicted to rejoin the team with new roles

Two Eagles legends are predicted to rejoin the team with new roles An intriguing list of 100 bold predictions for the 2025 NFL season forecasts Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham's return with new and expanded roles in the organization Often, when Eagles fans, or Philadelphia sports fans in general, are discussed, there's a tendency to lock in on their demanding personalities and, sometimes, zany nature. What gets left out of those discussions is their most important personality trait. No fan base cares about its team more than this one. No fan base loves its squad more. That's why they jeer so loudly and cheer even louder. That's the heart of every Birds fan. So, when Jason Kelce narrated that hype video last season and he advised, "They will love you in this city, if you love it", he wasn't lying. He and Brandon Graham lived that way for their entire careers, and even though both have hung the cleats up, Philadelphia fans in the City of Brotherly Love and all over the nation can rest easy knowing we haven't seen the last of them. A recent collection of bold predictions for the 2025 NFL season suggests they won't be gone for long. Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham are predicted to return to the Eagles with professional roles. What would we do without bold predictions? No, seriously... Who's just sitting around waiting for the season to begin? Conor Orr at Sports Illustrated certainly isn't. He recently cooked up a list of 100 things he's expecting to see this season. Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham return home to the nest, and they do so in a professional capacity. "I am reupping my Kelce prediction from a year ago because it still feels too perfect. The game's ultimate workhorse will seek quiet solace in the rhythms of an NFL season and locker room after a long season of media noise. Graham, who has long been rumored to rejoin his team in some capacity, will also join the fold to help guide the Eagles' young and dangerous defense." It's unlikely that anyone will have an issue with that, as Graham and Kelce have played for Andy Reid, Chip Kelly, Doug Pederson, and Nick Sirianni. They have been around the organization long enough to know many of the ins and outs. It's impossible to find two individuals who care more about the organization. Currently, Jason Kelce works for ESPN and runs a podcast with his brother, Travis Kelce. Graham recently retired, so we'll see what his next move is. You won't find any arguments here with their return. Kudos to Orr. Now, we need to improve his Super Bowl LX prediction. He has the Eagles losing to the Buffalo Bills. That one landed among ESPN's three most likely Super Bowl matchups. February is a long way away, but it's interesting to see what people are thinking.

Last season, the team went on a magical run and knocked off Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to win it all. Winning a second straight championship will be much more difficult. However, the Eagles have the pieces in place to make it happen. Throughout the course of the offseason, Philadelphia did lose some key pieces from the Super Bowl winning team. Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Darius Slay, and Mekhi Becton are all good. The Eagles also traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson away. He has them bringing back team legend Jason Kelce in 2025. No, he's not saying that Kelce will be returning to the field to play. Instead, he thinks Kelce will return to the Eagles in some professional form. Whether that is on the sideline or potentially in the front office, he did not detail. Orr also predicted that Brandon Graham, another longtime fan favorite, would join the team in an official capacity. "I am reupping my Kelce prediction from a year ago because it still feels too perfect," Orr wrote. "The game's ultimate workhorse will seek quiet solace in the rhythms of an NFL season and locker room after a long season of media noise. Graham, who has long been rumored to rejoin his team in some capacity, will also join the fold to help guide the Eagles' young and dangerous defense." He is one of the most loved Eagles in the history of the franchise. While he has gone on to have extreme success in the podcasting world, he belongs in Philadelphia. His heart has remained with the franchise, setting up a likely reunion at some point down the road. Why not make that reunion happen in 2025? Only time will tell, but this prediction from Orr is one that every Eagles fan could get behind. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Jason Kelce suggests game between flag team and tackle team to determine 2028 U.S. Olympic team

Last week, former Eagles center Jason Kelce helped save the tush push. This week, he has an idea for properly launching the Olympic flag football competition. Kelce offered up this idea during the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, via Austin Nivison of 'I think a coach that is familiar with flag football should select an NFL-represented team. That team should just play this flag football team that's been playing for a long time and feels like they are the best at it and don't need other guys.' The winning team would then be the Olympic team. Of course, the first challenge would be figuring out the players on the two teams that would meet in a winner-take-all showdown. But once the teams are set, it would be compelling. It would carry The Longest Yard vibes, with one hell of a twist. The more talented players would be the fish out of water. The more experienced players would be the physical Davids to the NFL Goliaths. Of course, more games and more practices and more reps increases the injury risk for the active NFL players. Of course, if they lose the Olympic qualifying showdown, the injury risk will be minimized. They wouldn't be playing in the Olympics at all.
