Potential for flooding remains in Indianapolis forecast. When rain is expected

Much of the state is under a flood watch until Sunday, following powerful storms that caused tornadoes in Hendricks County and Carmel, and also left Indiana's soil saturated. Central Indiana is already elevated to a flood warning around its rivers and streams. The U.S. could have severe thunderstorms and heavy rain from Texas to Ohio in coming days, an area already hard hit by Wednesday's deadly storms that prompted a rare 5 of 5 threat level in some areas. Updates: 7 dead as relentless spring storms unleash 'catastrophic' rainfall A flood warning is in effect until 12:45 p.m. Friday in Rush County, which has already seen more than an inch of rain. Randolph County east of Muncie has water covering roadways, prompting officials to remind drivers how dangerous it is to drive through water. It doesn't take a deluge to flood low-lying areas around Indianapolis. During Wednesday night's storm, parts of north Indianapolis saw 1.5 inches of rain, while southern parts of the city got more than 2.5 inches of rain. That rainfall prompted water to rise in some areas and vehicles became stranded in high water at South Sherman and Southeastern Avenue. No injuries were reported. "This is a weekend where we wanna remind people to never drive their vehicles around road closed or through flood waters," National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis meteorologist Jason Puma told IndyStar. "Turn around. Don't drown." Flooding causes more weather-related deaths than any other hazard and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of those flood-related drownings happen because people take vehicles into high water. Before traveling, check road conditions at Map: Indianapolis intersections prone to flooding during rain NWS Indianapolis said 2 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts are expected throughout Friday night. Puma said the first wave of rain will be here Friday around 3 p.m. with stronger storms coming overnight. Heavier rain will then be here Saturday coming in around 2 p.m. Check out these storm photos: Yes, that's a trampoline caught in utility lines 🌧️ Friday: Cloudy with occasional rain during the afternoon. The high is 57 degrees with a 90% chance of rain causing near an inch of rainfall. ⛈️ Friday night: A few thunderstorms could contain very heavy rain, especially overnight. There's a 100% chance of rain with the 1 to 2 inches of rainfall expected. Localized flooding is possible. The low is 54 degrees. 🌧️ Saturday: Showers and thundershowers in the morning, then overcast during the afternoon with occasional rain. Potential for heavy rainfall. There's a 90% chance of rain with the morning high being 59 degrees before falling to near 50 degrees. 🌧️ Saturday night: Occasional rain tapering to a few showers late. There's a 60% chance of rain with the low being around 40 degrees. ☁️/☁️ Sunday: Cloudy with a high of 48 degrees. ☁️ Sunday night: Cloudy skies early, then partly cloudy after midnight. Fatalities, wind damage, power loss. How Sunday's severe weather storm affected Indiana

From the South to the Midwest, millions of Americans were affected by the storms that swept through Sunday causing widespread damage and fatalities, and Indiana was no exception to the destruction. The storms left tens of thousands of Hoosiers without power. As of 7:50 a.m. Monday, more than 50,000 outages are being reported statewide, with the majority being from northern parts of the state, including St. Joseph, Elkhart and Porter counties. St. Joseph has more than 20,000 customers without power. That wasn't immediately clear early Monday morning. "We have survey teams who are getting ready to head out now and determine potential tornado touchdowns," National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis meteorologist Jason Puma told IndyStar. "We have lots of reports of tree and pole damage. We're still gathering data and finding out more information." The storm prompted multiple thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings on Sunday. Damage stretched across Indiana, from as far north as St. Joseph County, as far south as Warrick County, as far west as Vermillion County, and as far east as Randolph County, according to early reports. Central Indiana weather: Lightning, heavy rain as thunderstorms reach Indianapolis metro area The National Weather Service received several reports of storm damage across northern Indiana, with most damage from the storm resulting from gusts of wind reaching speeds as high as 60 mph in several counties. A gust of 80 mph was reported in Valparaiso. Roseland saw multiple trees knocked down by the storm. Winds brought down eight utility poles in Osceola. In Mishawaka, there was a report of a large uprooted pine tree that fell on a home. Another report said numerous trees were down in the area, with at least one building sustaining 'significant shingle loss.' The same thing happened in Granger. To the northwest, Gary Airport reported a wind gust of 74 mph. Near Hebron, a construction trailer overturned. Bartholomew, Brown, and Monroe counties were among the hardest-hit areas to the south and also experienced power outages. There were numerous reports of trees and utility poles down in Columbus along with 1-inch hail. Fatalities have been reported in the northern part of the state. In Valparaiso, strong winds tipped over a semi-tractor-trailer, killing a driver. Porter County deputies found the truck and trailer on its side and the man was pronounced dead at the scene according to a report from WGN. In Elkhart County, strong winds from a thunderstorm knocked over an Amish buggy killing a man, according to a report from WNDU. Indiana 3-30-25 I-41 just before I-64 in the Evansville Indiana Area. Power outages were affecting more than 4,000 customers in Hamilton and Marion counties by 7 p.m. on Sunday as severe storms rumbled through the Indianapolis area. Nearly 3,900 of those affected lived in Carmel along the U.S. Highway 31 corridor near Main and 136th streets, according to Duke Energy's outage map. The worst outage was in the Rohrer Road area, where 3,572 customers didn't have power. Marion County's provider, AES, reported that 287 customers were without power at the same time. To the south, Duke Energy noted 1,268 customers without power in Johnson County's Smith Valley community. Most power was restored by Monday morning to areas around Indianapolis, according to outage maps. NWS Indianapolis expected the chance of precipitation to grow from 60% in the daytime Sunday to 80% Sunday night. They counted an inch of rain with the highest being 1.2 inches over in Clark County in southern Indiana. Jade Jackson is a Public Safety Reporter for the Indianapolis Star. Sunday storms could bring hail, tornadoes: Predictions from NWS, Accuweather, Weather Channel

Storms set to impact at least 100 million people across the country this weekend have local meteorologists warning of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes in Indiana. Meteorologist Jason Puma told IndyStar warmer temperatures will be present Friday with a high of 78 degrees ahead of the storm system with cooler temperatures lowering to the 70s by the time the storms reach the area. The temperatures will drop to the 40s and 50s next Monday and Tuesday, before warming up again to the 60s with more rain and thunderstorms going into the middle of next week. Here's a look at what weather experts from different outlets are predicting: National Weather Service said there's a 90% chance of rain with thunderstorms after 11 a.m. The high will be near 72 degrees with south wind between 10 to 15 mph. Gusts could get as high as 28 mph. Rainfall amounts will reach between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, except higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms. That same chance of rain is ongoing Sunday night with thunderstorms possible before 2 a.m. The low will be 44 degrees with south and southwest winds going 11 mph. Gusts could get as high as 23 mph. New rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch are also possible. Along with an enhanced risk for strong winds, and possible tornadoes, National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis said there's a slight risk of 1-inch hail and localized flooding. Severe thunderstorms are likely for much of Indiana on Sunday. Meteorologists predict large hail, damaging winds, and strong tornadoes (EF2 or higher damage), according to an article on citing information from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. That includes St. Louis, Indianapolis, Little Rock, Louisville, Memphis and Nashville. Severe thunderstorms will create a risk of destructive winds and tornadoes across states, according to Accuweather. A map shows some hail, flooding downpours, and tornadoes are possible in major cities including Indianapolis on Sunday with more moderate storms bring south of Indianapolis. Chief Meteorologist Brian Wilkes is tracking warming temperatures and chances for thunderstorms heading into the weekend. While showers will be around this weekend, Wilkes said there will be gaps of rain-free time on Saturday with a high of 68 degrees, with most of those showers and thunderstorms happening Sunday with a high of 70. The station is also reporting "stronger, if not severe" storms in the state being possible Sunday. Tornado Watch: Be Prepared. Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Strap down the trampolines, it's going to be windy today in Indiana

Strap down the trampolines, it's going to be a windy day in Indiana, the National Weather Service said. A wind advisory was issued for most of the state until 7 p.m. Gusts are expected to reach 50 mph and winds from the southwest are expected to range between 20-30 mph. Wind gusts will blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs could be blown down into power lines, leading to power outages, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis cautions. "It doesn't mean we're going to get cold, but we will have a cold front going into the weekend," National Weather Service Indianapolis meteorologist Jason Puma told IndyStar. "But not like the arctic cold we've seen for the past few months. It will still be a lot warmer going in to next week." The advisory warns that winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. So, be sure to use extra caution and secure outdoor objects. Artic air brings freezing temperatures to central Indiana. How low will they go?

After snow flurries move out of the Indianapolis area Thursday afternoon, temperatures are expected to dip going into the weekend. Thursday morning saw bursts of snow flurries moving through central Indiana but no accumulation was expected. Winds from the north are coming down from Canada and with it are some cold temperatures. "It's similar to the extreme cold in January but it's not as cold," National Weather Service Indianapolis meteorologist Jason Puma told IndyStar. After a high of 29 degrees Thursday, the low will drop to around 12 degrees and a wind chill temp of 8 degrees. Further north in Kokomo, the wind chill is expected to dip into subzero territory overnight Thursday. It will warm up Friday with a high of 35 degrees, but a small amount of snow is expected to build up overnight Friday. Heavy rain is possible Saturday with another small amount of snow falling Saturday night going into Sunday morning. "There's a 50% chance of snow on Sunday with the high being 31," Puma said. Then things drop to single-digit temps Sunday night with a low of 6 degrees. On Monday the high is expected to be 18 degrees, but the sun will mostly be shining through the clearing clouds. Skies will be cloudy by night with the low being 9 degrees. Temperatures next week are expected to peak in the 20s. The night will be filled with super low temps and cold wind chills, including 7 degrees Tuesday night, 3 degrees Wednesday night, 4 degrees Thursday night and 11 degrees Friday night, the National Weather Service predicted Feb. 13.
