Manchester United Transfer DealSheet: Summer window latest, key targets and likely exits
After their worst season in generations, Manchester United's rebuild starts now. This summer's transfer window promises to be frenetic at Old Trafford as the club set about reshaping their squad in an effort to be competitive again in the higher reaches of the Premier League table. But who is coming in, who could leave and who will make the decisions over ins and outs? This is our guide to the club's possible business between now and the September 1 deadline. Jason Wilcox, as technical director, is the highest-ranking member of the football department and will have an influential voice in the recruitment process, working closely with chief executive Omar Berrada, who bridges the commercial and sporting sides of the club. Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who had his interim position made permanent ahead of this window, will also have significant input. Director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves conducts the talks when trying to conclude a deal. Vivell and Hargreaves are the primary points of contact for agents and sporting directors. Wilcox will also have that kind of dialogue, but his focus is liaising with head coach Ruben Amorim on his football needs. Advertisement Amorim's view also carries serious weight, and United appreciate that he requires backing in his system to have a chance of seeing success. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe oversees the running of the club and ultimately makes the calls on spending. United have already announced the signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who is expected to operate as one of the two No 10s behind the striker. Bringing in a new centre-forward is also on the agenda, after missing out on Ipswich's Liam Delap to Chelsea — with a move for Bryan Mbeumo in the offing. Amorim is also believed to want an athletic No 8-type midfielder, and strengthening in the wing-back area is on the agenda, too. A new goalkeeper could come into the reckoning should Andre Onana depart, but indications at this stage are that position is lower down the list. Adding goals to the team is the main priority, following a league campaign in which United scored just 44 times, around half the total of champions Liverpool (86). That followed three years of scoring 57, 58, and 57 Premier League goals, so it is a historic problem that became exacerbated last season. Getting wing-backs who can attack the final third or come inside to create central overloads is also a crucial aspect for Amorim's vision of a 3-4-2-1 United team to be realised. The approaches for Cunha, who turned 26 a week ago, and 22-year-old Delap show the kind of player United are targeting: Premier League experience, good scoring records, yet still with years of top-level football ahead of them. Both also had the benefit of being on contracts including release clauses, thus simplifying the transfer process dramatically. On Monday night, The Athletic reported that Bryan Mbeumo, 25, has decided he wants to join Manchester United. He had been on United's list as an alternative, and now Delap has chosen Chelsea, United have reconfigured their plans to try to secure the Brentford forward. Advertisement Mbeumo just scored 20 Premier League goals in a season for the first time in his career: in previous years, when Ivan Toney led the line for Brentford, he managed four (in 2020-21) then nine twice. While he does not have a release clause, Brentford accept this may be the summer to sell, with his contract running to 2026 with the option of an extra year. Amorim is a major admirer of Viktor Gyokeres, his former Sporting CP striker, while Antoine Semenyo, the Bournemouth winger, has also been looked at. Victor Osimhen's expected wages have been seen as prohibitive but there could be a reevaluation of the Napoli striker. As has seemed to be the case every summer for a decade, getting their player sales right will have a huge bearing on United's business. The emphasis on this aspect of the market is heightened now, not only to raise funds because of United's bleak financial picture but to shape the squad to Amorim's wishes after his mid-season appointment. The absence of European football for United next season means he wants a smaller senior squad, in any case. Amorim has made clear that Alejandro Garnacho is on the market, and United will also press to get adequate offers for Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia and Antony, who all spent the second half of last season out on loan. United will hope Chelsea follow through on the obligation to buy Jadon Sancho after his loan there. Rasmus Hojlund might also become subject to a move away if United sign a centre-forward — Inter are looking at him — while Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal's approach for Bruno Fernandes could yet transform the entire strategy at Old Trafford. The wages being earned by United players mean loan exits are more likely than sales in quite a few cases. Temporary moves allow those involved to keep getting their full salaries — usually paid in combination between United and the new club — while getting a chance of more regular football. Advertisement That could yet be the solution for Rashford who, after spending the second half of last season at Aston Villa, is pursuing his aim to play for Barcelona. His brother and agent Dwaine Maynard travelled out for talks with the new Spanish champions, and their head coach Hansi Flick has spoken warmly about Rashford. There are several young players for whom loan moves will be explored. Signing Cunha as soon as the window opened on Monday was an uncharacteristically swift move by United, aided by the terms of the transfer already being agreed by Wolves. They also held face-to-face talks with Delap that were ultimately unsuccessful. The Old Trafford club is set to open talks with Brentford over Mbeumo as they pursue an agreement to sign the forward this summer. Further checks on targets are ongoing behind the scenes. Finances are tight but United did budget to sign Cunha and Delap without the income from Champions League football next season. Their combined cost of £92.5million ($125m) could have been offset in cash terms by instalments — Wolves will be paid in three equal chunks starting this summer, for instance — and also on the books by amortising the fees over the length of their contracts; in Cunha's case, an initial five years. The money assigned for buying Delap, who will instead be sold to Chelsea for that £30million fee stated in his release clause, can now be used on another player. Signings beyond that are set to be dependent on sales. United wrote to fans in January to outline the dangers of breaching PSR (profit and sustainability rules): 'We are currently making a significant loss each year — totalling over £300million in the past three years. This is not sustainable and if we do not act now we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch.' Man Utd confirm men's first-team coach is leaving Ruben Amorim's backroom staff to ‘find a new challenge elsewhere'
MANCHESTER UNITED have confirmed a surprise shake-up behind the scenes with Andreas Georgson leaving his role. The Swedish coach joined the club less than 12 months ago under Erik Ten Hag, but he's decided he wants a new challenge. 3 3 He was appointed as a set-piece guru - however with United struggling this season and looking to make changes in all departments his departure was seen as inevitable. Insiders suggest one of the reasons for his departure is that responsibility for dead-ball situations was taken away from him by Ruben Amorim. Georgson arrived from Norwegian side Lillestrom, where he was head coach. But with the club finishing a disappointing 15th in the league and failing to secure European football, it is clear that changes were necessary. Georgson said: "It has been a fantastic experience serving as first-team coach at Manchester United. "I will always be proud of my association with such a great football club. "This period of my career has now come to an end as I leave to find a new challenge elsewhere. "While excited about the opportunities ahead, I am sad to be leaving so many great colleagues and friends at Carrington, who make Manchester United truly special. "Even during such a tough season, the professionalism and dedication of the players and staff never wavered, and I know there will be better times ahead." United's technical director Jason Wilcox said: "Andreas has been a valued member of our men's first-team coaching set-up over the past year, and we are grateful for his significant contribution. "He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the next stage of his career." Manager Amorim, meanwhile, is said to be reshuffling the pack behind the scenes as part of a summer overhaul, following a post-season tour which featured a loss to the Aseasn All-Stars and a win over Hong Kong.

Omar Berrada says Man Utd have plan in place for ambitious transfer window
Chief executive Omar Berrada says Manchester United will balance 'ambition' with the need to be 'prudent' in the transfer market having been given permission to wrap up a deal for Wolves' Matheus Cunha. The Red Devils are looking to rebuild the side after their worst top-flight season since they were relegated in 1973-74, which was compounded by last week's Europa League final loss to Tottenham in Bilbao. Advertisement That damaging defeat meant United missed out on silverware and Champions League qualification, worth an estimated £100 million (€120 million), and the club have wasted little time trying to improve Ruben Amorim's side. Cunha looks set to be first through the door as the PA news agency understands Wolves granted them permission to schedule a medical and finalise a deal for the Brazil international, having met his £62.5 million (€74.4 million) release clause. 'I can't talk about specifics, but I can say that we've been planning for many months now,' he told MUTV. 'We were ready for all the different scenarios, so now we know what we need to do. The men behind Man United's planned summer of rejuvenation
Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox will once again play a key role in the club's massive summer of recruitment. The Red Devils have made it a priority this upcoming window to revitalise their playing squad after an embarrassing 15th place finish in the Premier League. The Athletic report that Wilcox has been 'watching Amorim's training sessions and offering a tactical bridge between the coaches and the board.' The former Manchester City man is said to have a 'strong' relationship with Amorim and the pair are in daily discussions to align the 'sporting decisions and recruitment strategy.' Despite this being his first role at Premier League level, his attention to detail is seen as a 'major strength'. He is also judged to have 'expertise' at youth level, which 'maps onto United's approach to take chances on signing emerging talents, given the financial picture at the club.' United's director of negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, will handle transfer and contract negotiations. Christopher Vivell is another big player in United's ambitious summer plans. He originally joined the club on a temporary basis last year. Nonetheless, he has impressed those at the top sufficiently to secure a permanent gig at the club. The Athletic report that he 'is playing a key role in shaping United's strategy.' His main job is to find players who fit Amorim's requirements but crucially, also players that can fit a number of different systems, not just a 3-4-2-1. The biggest issue the recruitment team want to address this summer is the United squad's 'lack of necessary athleticism.' It is believed this is one of the most important reasons they have struggled so badly in the league. It is also said to be one of the main driving forces behind the signing of Patrick Dorgu in January. United's top brass are reported to back Amorim completely with chief executive officer, Omar Berrada's 'reputation especially aligned' to the Portuguese coach's success. What's more, 'they are aware of the need to back him in a meaningful way to give his approach a chance of succeeding' ahead of arguably the most important summer in the club's history.
