Jatinder guides Oman to dramatic Super Over win over USA

Duleep Mendis' men register second consecutive victory in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Lauderhill, USA MUSCAT: Captain Jatinder Singh produced a masterclass under pressure, scoring a sublime century and later finishing the job in the Super Over as Oman edged hosts USA in a dramatic ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 encounter at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, USA, on Wednesday. It was Oman's second successive win in the ongoing League 2 tri-series, which also features Canada. Jatinder's knock of 100 from 101 balls laid the foundation for Oman's total of 266. But it was his nerveless striking in the one-over shootout — where he smashed 13 off just 4 balls — that sealed a thrilling win for Duleep Mendis' side, helping Oman leapfrog Scotland into third place on the eight-team table. Opting to field first after winning the toss, USA might have hoped to restrict Oman to a modest total. But the visitors found a pillar of resistance in Jatinder, who batted with patience and purpose despite early wickets tumbling around him. Oman were precariously placed at 55 for 4 in the 12th over when Jatinder and the experienced Mohammad Nadeem (40 off 89) came together. Oman players celebrating after winning the super over Their 103-run fifth-wicket stand revived the innings. Jatinder reached his 50 from 62 balls and accelerated smartly to bring up a brilliant century off exactly 100 deliveries, striking 9 fours and 2 sixes. The captain was eventually dismissed for 100 in the 41st over, caught by Saiteja Mukkamalla off Saurabh Netravalkar. Late fireworks from Vinayak Shukla (44 off 42, 3x4, 2x6) and a whirlwind 42 off just 23 balls by Hassnain Shah, which included four maximums, powered Oman past the 260 mark. Despite five wickets from Milind Kumar (5/66), Oman's total of 266 from 49.4 overs looked competitive. USA FIGHT BACK TO TIE USA's chase began with early jitters as leg-spinner Samay Shrivastava and pacer Hassnain Shah removed openers Andries Gous and skipper Monank Patel inside the first 26 overs. Smit Patel (44) and Saiteja Mukkamalla (46) tried to rebuild, but regular strikes by Oman kept the game tight. The turning point came when Milind Kumar joined the party. His counterattacking 68 from 65 balls, supported by a cameo from Harmeet Singh (25 off 14), brought USA right back into the match. The hosts needed 18 to win off the final over with two wickets in hand. Jasdeep Singh and Nosthush Kenjige were at the crease with Shrivastava to defend 17. Kenjige stole a leg bye off the first ball to bring the attacking Jasdeep on strike. A couple was followed by a no-ball (full toss) from Shrivastava that was pulled to the boundary to leak five runs. However, off the free hit, Kenjige was run out to swing the pendulum in Oman's favour. USA needed 10 to win off the last three balls. Jasdeep took a couple and then smashed a six to bring the equation down to two to win off the last ball. Shrivastava held his nerve to concede only a single, tying the scores and forcing a Super Over. SUPER OVER DRAMA USA batted first in the Super Over and managed 13 without loss, thanks to a big six from Andries Gous off Hassnain Shah. But that was not enough against a man in form and full confidence. Jatinder, fittingly, returned to finish what he started. Facing Harmeet Singh, he clubbed a six and a four in the first three balls before Hassnain sealed the win with a single, as Oman chased down 14 in just five deliveries to spark celebrations. The result saw Oman improve to 22 points from 18 matches, overtaking Scotland and staying firmly in the qualification hunt. USA remain on 24 points (18 matches), holding second place but will rue a missed opportunity to close the gap on leaders Netherlands, who have 26 from 20 games. Speaking after the match, Oman head coach Duleep Mendis praised his side's composure. 'It was a great game of cricket. The boys showed tremendous heart, especially Jatinder, who was outstanding in both innings.' Jatinder was named Player of the Match — a deserved accolade for a performance that blended grit, flair and leadership. Oman now turn their focus to Canada, their next opponents in Lauderhill on Friday. With momentum on their side, and their skipper in good touch, they will be looking to continue their climb up the League 2 table. Brief scores: Oman 266 all out in 49.4 overs (Jatinder Singh 100, Hassnain Shah 42, Vinayak Shukla 44; Milind Kumar 5/66, Saurabh Netravalkar 3/49) tied with USA 266/9 in 50 overs (Milind Kumar 68, Saiteja Mukkamalla 46, Smit Patel 44; Samay Shrivastava 3/68, Aamir Kaleem 2/31, Shakeel Ahmed 2/38) Super Over: USA: 13/0 (Andries Gous 11*, Harmeet Singh 2*) lost to Oman: 14/0 (Jatinder 13*, Hassnain 1*) — Oman won in 0.5 overs.

‘Driven by revenge after assault, stripping & more, Class XII student fell in terror module handlers' trap'

Jalandhar: An 18-year-old youth who is among the 13 suspects arrested recently for allegedly being part of two terror modules, wanted to take revenge on another youth and his associates who had beat him up, stripped him, and after filming these acts, posted the video clips on social media. "Revenge was the word on his lips and in his heart before he was trapped by the handlers of terror modules," said his parents and the village sarpanch. Coming from a marginal farmer family — his grandfather, father, and paternal uncle jointly own six kanal of land, and his father works in a distillery—Jatinder Singh was a Class XII student at the govt senior secondary school at Lakhan Kalan village of Kapurthala district. He turned 18 on March 2. His life took a complete turn over the last two-three months due to a fight with the group of youths, who, his family says, not only humiliated him but also did not let him appear in the examination properly. Village sarpanch Kulwinder Singh Sohal, a former Armyman and a retired teacher from the same school, gave details of what Jatinder went through. "He had an affair with a girl, which a youth from the Talwandi Mehma village did not like, and who thrashed him along with his associates. We later learnt that this started began in Jan-Feb, and the uploading of the video clips of his thrashing and humiliation disturbed Jatinder a lot. When I questioned him just before the police took him away, he said he wanted to take revenge. Now we have learnt that he was contacted by a person after seeing his video and was apparently trapped with a promise to help him in taking revenge." His father, Jaspal Singh, told TOI that Jatinder disappeared from home in the first week of April and then returned. "We are not aware of anything, and we want justice for what he suffered at the hands of the youths," he said, adding that his son was an amritdhari, but around a year back, he removed his kirpan and cut his hair. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo His mother, Gurpreet Kaur, said that he once showed her the video of his thrashing and stripping, and he had been taking about avenging this act. "When he returned in the morning of April 16, the family decided that he should be handed over to the police. The village and the family want those who harassed the boy to this extent to be brought to justice," Sohal added. In the three videos available with the family, a youth being called Bakra can be heard and seen abusing and slapping Jatinder. In one of these videos, a group of at least nine youths, one carrying a gandaasi (a sharp-edged weapon), can be seen abusing and threatening Jatinder. Announcing the busting of the two terror modules on April 19, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said that these modules were sponsored by the Pak spy agency and being controlled by Babbar Khalsa International, with two key operational nodes—France-based Satnam Singh alias Satta and Greece-based Jaswinder Singh alias Manu Agwan.

Oman stun table-toppers USA with dominant spin display

Muscat – Oman roared back into form with a commanding seven-wicket victory over group leaders USA in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 at the Oman Cricket Academy ground in Al Amerat on Wednesday. Bouncing back from their opening defeat against Namibia on Monday, Duleep Mendis' men delivered a spin masterclass to dismantle the USA batting lineup, restricting them to a meagre 151 before skipper Jatinder Singh anchored the chase with a composed, unbeaten half-century (82). Opting to bowl first, Oman's spin quartet – Shakeel Ahmed (4/26), Jay Odedra (3/23), Samay Shrivastava (2/34), and Wasim Ali (1/7) – left the USA in disarray, skittling them out for 151 in 42.1 overs. Saiteja Mukkamalla fought a lone battle with a resilient 80 off 106 balls, but the rest of the USA lineup crumbled under relentless pressure. The visitors suffered an early collapse as Shakeel Ahmed ripped through the top order, removing three of the first four batters, including captain Monank Patel, to leave the USA reeling at 36/3 inside the powerplay. Brief resistance from Milind Kumar (12) and Aaron Jones (15) along with Mukkamalla momentarily steadied the innings, but Odedra and Shrivastava struck crucial blows to trigger another collapse. The tail offered little resistance, ensuring Oman had a modest target to chase. In response, Oman's openers, Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem, laid a solid foundation with a measured 63-run partnership. Kaleem's patient 28 off 78 balls ended when he was trapped lbw by Harmeet Singh, but Jatinder remained rock-solid. He brought up his fifty off 88 balls, steering Oman's chase with calculated strokes. Despite losing Hammad Mirza (12) at 97/2, Jatinder and Wasim Ali (18) stitched a crucial 32-run stand to keep Oman in firm control. Wasim departed in the 41st over, but Jatinder, finishing unbeaten on 82 off 127 deliveries with eight fours and two sixes, alongside Vinayak Shukla (8*), guided Oman home in 45.5 overs. Jatinder also set a new Oman record by becoming the first to have scored 12 ODI half-centuries, bettering the 11 in the name of former Oman batter Aqib Ilyas. Shakeel Ahmed was adjudged the Player of the Match for his four-wicket spell. The emphatic victory propelled Oman to third place in the standings with 16 points, trailing only USA (18) and Canada (16), though the latter have played two fewer games. Netherlands (14) edged Scotland (14) on net run rate for fourth spot, with Namibia (12), Nepal (6), and UAE (4) rounding out the table. Oman will look to build on this momentum when they face Namibia on February 16 before concluding the tri-series with a rematch against the USA on February 18. Brief scores: USA 151 in 42.1 overs (Saiteja Mukkamalla 80, Aaron Jones 15; Shakeel Ahmed 4/26, Jay Odedra 3/23, Samay Shrivastava 2/34) lost to Oman 152/3 in 45.5 overs (Jatinder Singh 82 n.o., Aamir Kaleem 28; Harmeet Singh 2/20).
