Major League Baseball announces incredible Tigers' Casey Mize news
The Detroit Tigers have one of baseball's best teams this season. Sitting atop the American League and the AL Central, it's no surprise that multiple Tigers players are heading to the 2025 All-Star Game. Initially, Javier Baez, Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres, and Tarik Skubal earned All-Star nods. But Zack McKinstry also earned a spot as a replacement, and a few days after that, Major League Baseball made another incredible Tigers announcement. MLB announced that Tigers starter Casey Mize has been added to the All-Star team for the American League, replacing Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet on the AL team's active roster. It's an incredible accomplishment for Mize and the Tigers. It's Detroit's sixth All-Star, the most of any team in the Majors this season. It's also Mize's first in his career, and he's more than earned the honor. The 28-year-old has been on a tear this season. He has a 2.63 ERA through 15 starts. He has a 9-2 record, and through 85.1 innings pitched, Mize has 73 strikeouts and 21 walks. MORE: Tigers could trade for Alex Bregman if Red Sox extension talks fail It's been the best season of his career by far, and it's helped elevate the Tigers to the top team in the AL and top team in baseball overall this season. With Mize set to hit free agency after the 2026 season, his performance and All-Star nod this season should go a long way toward improving his new deal he'll sign in the future. Detroit has six All-Stars this season, and Mize is more than deserving of a spot on the All-Star team. While he doesn't qualify for a spot on the MLB leaderboards this season, if he did, he'd be tied for 12th overall in ERA on the year. It'll be a strong contingent heading down to Atlanta for the Tigers, with Mize joining five of his teammates in a well-deserved All-Star bid for the former first overall pick. Detroit Tigers' Javier Báez leaves game as left shoulder flares up, not considered serious
ARLINGTON, TX — On June 14, Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Báez tried to score from first base on a ball to the right-center gap, but an aggressive send resulted in him thrown out at home plate on a relay from Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz. It wasn't a close play at the plate. Báez appeared to hurt his left shoulder on the head-first slide, as he remained on the ground for a few moments. As it turns out, he did suffer an injury that day. "My shoulder kind of got stuck," Báez said Sunday, July 20, more than a month later. "It's been bothering me, but I feel good. We've been doing treatment." SUNDAY'S GAME: Tigers snap six-game losing streak with 2-1 win vs. Rangers in Tarik Skubal gem In Sunday's game, Báez exited in the sixth inning with no obvious injury, replaced by Trey Sweeney at shortstop. Although there wasn't a specific play that triggered the issue, Báez said he felt soreness in his left shoulder while he was playing. The Tigers beat the Texas Rangers, 2-1, at Globe Life Field, snapping a season-long six game losing streak. Báez went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before his departure. Manager A.J. Hinch didn't provide a specific diagnosis. "So Javy came into the dugout and just said he didn't feel right," Hinch said after Sunday's win. "I asked him what was going on. He just kept saying he didn't feel right, so I took him out of the game." Báez clarified afterward. "I was just trying to figure it out," Báez said. "I didn't want to keep playing with soreness. It is sore a little bit, but we've been doing treatment today, and we'll do treatment tomorrow, and we'll see how it feels." EL MAGO, AN ALL-STAR: 4 years after trade, Javier Báez and Pete Crow-Armstrong share CF as All-Star starters In 2025, Báez is hitting .274 with 10 home runs and a .746 OPS in 81 games, reclaiming his role as the Tigers' primary shortstop. The 32-year-old made the All-Star Game for the third time in his 12-year MLB career. He is one of the top candidates for American League Comeback Player of the Year. Báez doesn't expect a stint on the injured list. "Not for now," Báez said. "I don't think so. I think I will get better day-to-day. I'll see how it feels tomorrow." Need more proof that Báez is in the clear? He led the line of high-fives to celebrate the win, joked with teammates in the clubhouse after the game and rotated his left shoulder freely like it was no big deal. "I think it's something connected with all the muscles that go through my shoulder," Báez said, "but my shoulder, as you can see, it's really good. I have really good mobility." How to watch Tigers at Rangers weekend series, with Tarik Skubal slated for ‘Sunday Night Baseball'
Baseball breaks its All-Star intermission where the stars at night are big and bright. Suitably, reigning Triple Crown hurler Tarik Skubal is set to take the mound on 'Sunday Night Baseball,' with his AL-leading Detroit Tigers up against the turbulent Texas Rangers. This weekend's three-game set offers big-name pitchers with national intrigue, plus some elite bullpen arms with unleaded gas. Rangers games can also be streamed on Victory+. 'Sunday Night Baseball' can also be streamed on ESPN+. The Tigers hit the Midsummer Classic with the MLB's best record, but came in on a four-game losing streak after a Seattle Mariners sweep. Still, Detroit is an orange-colored, black-striped wagon in 2025 — ranking sixth in runs per game and team slugging percentage, while sitting ninth in collective ERA and eighth in WHIP. A.J. Hinch's crew is also 14-7 in one-run games this season, and 20 of its 59 wins have been come-from-behind triumphs. Advertisement Last year's Tigers had a power problem. Riley Greene was the only batter to hit more than 18 home runs, and his 24 long balls left him outside the league's top 40 total. This year's iteration is markedly better. Greene already has 24 homers and is on pace for an even 40; Spencer Torkelson is projected for 35 and Kerry Carpenter for 27. Above all else, Detroiters should celebrate the improbable career revival of Javier Báez. After a half-decade of free-falling below league averages and replacement metrics, Báez started in center field for the American League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Detroit's pitching is headlined by incumbent Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, who is the probable starter for this series' finale on 'Sunday Night Baseball.' Despite his dominant 2024, Skubal's numbers are somehow even better right now — a lower ERA (2.23 from 2.39) and WHIP (0.83 from 0.92), plus a complete-game shutout that he didn't have last year. The southpaw also leads MLB in fielding independent pitching, strikeouts per nine innings and K:BB ratio. On the other end, the Rangers are desperate for some legitimate momentum. The 2023 World Series champs have struggled to stay above .500, despite touting a league-best 3.28 team ERA. Texas ranks in the top five in most major pitching categories, and its relief efforts have been thoroughly lights out. The bats have been a glaring disappointment, though. Five of the team's top 10 hitters are below a .240 average, and bellwether shortstop Corey Seager has been marred by injuries and inconsistencies. Worse still, Texas' remaining road is one of the toughest in MLB per strength of schedule. The Rangers can still make a push for the final wild card spot, but to do so, they will need considerably more from underperforming mainstays Marcus Semien (third-lowest slugging percentage of his 13 pro seasons) and Adolis García (a ghastly .279 OBP). Advertisement The hosts match Skubal on Sunday with Nathan Eovaldi. Though far quieter in stature and stardom, the 35-year-old right-hander has been spectacular in his late-career renaissance. He's in the 99 percentile for pitching run value and 97 percentile for walk percentage. His splitter is embarrassing opponents, and he threw seven scoreless innings against these Tigers back on May 11. Unexpected Mets fan is heartbroken over Pete Crow-Armstrong trade
As Pete Crow-Armstrong has put together an incredible season for the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets fans have slowly realized the sad fact. PCA was once their promising prospect. But the Mets traded him away for a couple months of Javier Baez, and it hasn't aged well. Crow-Armstrong made the All-Star Game as a starter in this, his first full MLB season after making his debut in 2024. He could end up with a 40-40 campaign of homers and steals. And one famous Mets fan just found out. Cleveland Cavaliers superstar guard Donovan Mitchell posted this on X on Thursday: MORE: Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak was almost much longer than 56 games Mitchell, who is from New York City, still reps his hometown often even though he now plays in Cleveland. Detroit Tigers' Javier Báez, Gleyber Torres on 2025 All-Star Game: 'It's a blessing'
Detroit Tigers players Gleyber Torres and Javier Báez talk to reporters during the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
