Delhi Police busts exam cheating racket; dummy candidate, two school staff and woman held

Delhi Police has busted a cheating racket in a government job examination with the arrest of a dummy candidate, a school teacher, an office superintendent and a woman who allegedly facilitated the impersonation at an exam centre in Greater Kailash, an official said on Monday (May 26, 2025). The accused allegedly helped the dummy candidate impersonate a real applicant in the examination for the post of Junior Secretariat Attendant under the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Samiti, police said in a statement. The arrested people have been identified as Sumit Dahiya (29), who appeared as the dummy candidate, Bimal Kumar Singh (59), a physics teacher at the examination centre school, Baljeet Singh (50), the office superintendent of the same school, and a 40-year-old woman from Kanjhawala in Delhi, read the statement. The woman, who has links with the school staff, allegedly coordinated with them to allow Dahiya's entry into the examination hall using documents of the original candidate named Ankur, police said. "The matter came to light on May 18 when a team of Greater Kailash Police Station received information about an impersonation attempt at a private school in Hemkunt Colony, where the CBSE was conducting the JNV recruitment exam," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South, Ankit Chauhan, said in the statement. The DCP said that on reaching the spot, the school principal informed the police about suspected impersonation. Upon verification, it was revealed that Dahiya had appeared in place of a candidate named Ankur, police said. A case was subsequently registered and Dahiya was taken into custody. Dahiya disclosed during interrogation that he was promised ₹6 lakh by a middleman to appear in the examination as a proxy for the real candidate — Ankur, they said. The DCP said that "Dahiya contacted a woman known to him who has prior connections with the school staff and offered her ₹2 lakh to facilitate his entry". "The woman, in turn, approached Bimal Kumar Singh and Baljeet Singh and paid them Rs 50,000 each to assist in the plan," he added. The woman, police said, is known for helping students get admitted to open school exams and had existing links with school managements. She played a key role in connecting the dummy candidate with the insiders at the school. According to police, the trio — the woman, the teacher, and the superintendent — coordinated on the day of the exam to ensure Dahiya could enter and sit for the exam without being noticed. Ankur's original Aadhaar card and admit card, both of which were used to gain entry to the exam centre, were recovered from Dahiya's possession. Police also recovered the OMR sheet filled by Dahiya during the examination. All four accused were apprehended based on Dahiya's disclosure. Efforts are currently underway to arrest the original candidate, Ankur, and the middleman who arranged the deal, police said. Dahiya, a resident of Haryana's Sonipat, is a 12th-pass aspirant preparing for various competitive exams, they said. The school involved in this case is a private institution located in Hemkunt Colony which was designated as an examination centre by the CBSE for recruitment drive. Further investigation is underway, police said.

Stir threatened in ‘neglected' Manipur district

GUWAHATI A village authority representing the people of Noney, the headquarters of Manipur's Noney district, has threatened a mass agitation against the infrastructural and administrative negligence in the Naga-dominated district. In a memorandum to Manipur's Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 3, the Longmai Village Authority set a 10-day deadline for the State government to ensure a series of projects promised to Noney when it was carved out of the Tamenglong district in 2016. The deadline expired on May 12. 'We have been compelled to go ahead with a democratic form of mass agitation after not receiving an affirmative response within the 10 days from the date of submission of our 15-point memorandum,' Kasaigai Gangmei, the chairman of Longmai Village Authority, said. Locals often refer to Noney, about 63 km west of the State's capital, Imphal, as Longmai. According to the village authority, the district administration is functioning without proper infrastructure and subordinate staff. It claimed projects such as the prefab field district hospital at Longmai have not moved after their foundation stones were laid over the past few years. Some of the projects that have not taken off include the Eklavya Model Residential School at Duibansui, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Noney, the Industrial Training Institute at Noney, and a cold storage at a suitable location. The village authority also said the offices of most of the departments have not been opened in the district yet. Apart from Mr. Gangmei, the memorandum was signed by the Longmai Village Authority's secretary, Gailanchung Kamei, and Longmai Customary Court functionaries Keineshong Gonmei and Gongjai Kamei.

Hyderabad: Even as most students stay glued to their books during board exams, Banoth Pavani, a determined para-athlete from Telangana, was juggling a tightrope of ambition — between the exam hall and the shooting with only one hand, Pavani participated in a national-level para-shooting tournament at Khelo India in Delhi, where she clinched a bronze medal on March 23. Barely two days later, the class 12 student appeared for her biology board exam — and came through with flying colours, scoring an impressive 79% overall."On March 20, I left for Delhi to participate in the Khelo India games . I returned on March 24 and appeared for my exam the next day. I'm really happy that I could win a medal and still do well in my studies," Pavani shared with TOI, her voice beaming with from Khammam, Pavani's story is one of grit and quiet determination. Her father works as a mason and her mother is a tailor — yet despite limited resources and physical challenges, she is aiming for the skies. "My dream is to win a medal at the 2028 Paralympics. And academically, I want to become a doctor," she says with clarity and makes Pavani's feat even more remarkable is that she is not alone. Fourteen students, including 12 from class 10 and two from class 12, from the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Rangareddy, which houses a centre of excellence for para sports, all cleared their board exams while also competing at the national and international level. All of them are classified under the children with special needs category."We have 45 para-athletes currently studying here. It's a proud moment for all of us," said Gopala Krishna, deputy commissioner of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samithi, inspiring students come from diverse backgrounds and battle different physical challenges — from hearing impairments to limb-related them is K Devendra, a class 10 student who has 85% disability in his left hand.
