What's behind America's growing interest in Pakistan's Balochistan?
What's behind America's growing interest in Pakistan's Balochistan? Jayanta Kalita Aug 14, 2025, 16:54 IST IST The US has obliged the Pakistan army chief by designating the Baloch Liberation Army a 'foreign terrorist organisation'. But there is more to this than just terror. The next step could be Pakistan opening Washington's access to Balochistan's valuable mineral resources The US has designated the Baloch Liberation Army ( BLA ) and its infamous hit squad, the Majeed Brigade — responsible for multiple suicide attacks in Pakistan — a 'foreign terrorist organisation'. This move is seen as a shot in the arm of Pakistan army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir , whose forces have frequently been targeted by Baloch separatists and the Pakistani Taliban, already a banned outfit. Besides, this development would not only boost Islamabad's counter-terror operations, but also open the door for foreign mining companies, including those from the US and China, to exploit Balochistan 's vast reserves of rare earth elements and minerals, estimated to be worth between $3tn and $5tn.

One year of violence: How mobocracy has replaced democracy in Bangladesh Jayanta Kalita Jul 23, 2025, 18:49 IST IST Amid political uncertainty, Bangladesh has seen a sharp surge in mob violence and lynchings since the 2024 ouster of the Hasina regime. While such incidents are not new to the country, the recent spike is largely attributed to the breakdown of effective policing and law enforcement Bangladesh has been engulfed by unchecked mob violence and killings, arbitrary detention of civilians and a troubling rise in attacks targeting the Hindu minority since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government nearly a year ago. Just last week, deadly clashes erupted during a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in the hometown of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's founding father and Hasina 's father. The rally descended into chaos as hundreds of supporters of the former prime minister confronted police, resulting in five fatalities.

To be truly liberal and inclusive, Mamdani will have to do more
To be truly liberal and inclusive, Mamdani will have to do more Jayanta Kalita Jun 27, 2025, 19:00 IST IST For a man who could be New York's next mayor and is capable of re-energising Democrats against a rampaging Trump, he will have to do more. To start with, he must make protecting Hindus and Jews a part of his anti-hate effort When rapper-turned-politician Zohran Mamdani declared his candidacy for mayor last October, he was a relatively obscure state legislator, unfamiliar to the majority of New Yorkers. Fast forward to June 24 night, the 33-year-old celebrated a remarkable rise in politics, announcing his triumph in the Democratic primary at a Queens bar – just moments after former governor Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat.
