UDHAGAMANDALAM: The second chapter of NilgiriScapes- 2025, a conference on revitalising the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve (NBR), will be held in Ooty for three days starting Aug 21.
This initiative is community-rooted, bridging academic research with lived experiences by connecting scientists, policymakers, civil society and indigenous communities. It promotes inclusive, knowledge-based, and culturally grounded sustainability.
Over three days, the conference will feature plenaries, panels and cultural sessions that will explore a variety of topics, including the foundation of the NBR, ecology, land use and planning, human-wildlife conflict, as well as environmental law, governance, and advocacy, among other relevant issues.
Prominent speakers like Benno Boer from Unesco, Justice Jayashankaran Nambiar, B J Krishnan, a senior environmentalist and former member of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, and scientist Raman Sukumar will participate in the event.
Cultural performances and storytelling sessions by communities from Gudalur, Wayanad and Coonoor will emphasize the deep connections between culture and conservation.
Additionally, an exhibition featuring the NilgiriScapes team and local groups will be held in the RCTC hall.
