R. Jayasri, of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam, has become the first student to be admitted to Ethiraj College for Women in Chennai for the academic year 2025-26. She has been given admission to B. Com (General) with a scholarship, said Principal Uma Gowrie.
Ms. Jayasri scored 572 marks in the recently concluded Class 12 Board exams. Her father Ramesh has studied up to Class 5 and works as a mechanic at a shop in T. Ms. Jayasri's older sister Yuvasri graduated with a B. Com from the same college in 2024.
Free education
V.M. Muralidharan, chairman of the college, said the aim of the college's effort to provide scholarships is to enable students with good scores from disadvantaged families pursue higher education. The scholarship will enable Ms. Jayasri to study for free at the college.
Ms. Jayasri said she would like to work in a government job after her degree, as it would help uplift her family's economic position. Her sister is currently preparing for entrance exams for government jobs.
