Man pleads guilty to 2024 carjacking, shooting charges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man pleaded guilty to 2024 carjacking and shooting charges on Wednesday. According to the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Tennessee, on April 15, Jaylen Simpson, 23, pleaded guilty to carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury and the use of a firearm during a crime of violence. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 16, and he will face a minimum of 10 years to life in prison for the discharge of the firearm. Last year, he was charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Theft of Property $2,500 or less to wit a Firearm, Reckless Driving, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Evading Arrest on Foot, and Employment of a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony. Man shot during car theft, suspect detained On May 16, 2024, Simpson was hiding in the backyard in the 3400 block of West Horn Lake Road, and the resident confronted him outside. Reports say the suspect shot the victim in the stomach before he took off in the victim's Kia Cadenza. Officers responded to the shooting at the residence just before 8 a.m. The victim was located on the scene and transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. Three juveniles charged for mobile home fires in Crittenden County A little before 9 a.m., the car was found in the area of Kimball and Pendleton. Officers saw the car and tried to stop it, but Simpson reportedly sped off. The car came to a stop in the 2200 block of Lamar Avenue. Simpson fled the scene on foot with his backpack.
