PHOTO: SUPPLIED They're officially the best in the South Island. Wakatipu High School was last week named top school at the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim. Arts director Alison Price says it's the first time the school's won best overall school in the 20-plus years it's been taking part. It's smaller jazz combo band was named combo winner, and picked up a gold award, while its big band won a silver award. Joel Winter, 18, was named most outstanding small group drummer and most accomplished rhythm section performer, while Haru Kuroe, 16, was named most outstanding bassist and musician. Louis Buchanan, 17, was most outstanding keyboard player, while Haru, Joel and Bethany Argyle, 17, were selected for the all stars band. Price says it's a "huge" result given they were competing against more than a dozen schools, including several private ones. She put the results down to the band members' hard work and a "team effort" that includes tutors Chris Mason-Battley and Alistair Monteath.

BSB celebrates musical excellence with remarkable wins in 2025 competitions

The British School of Bahrain (BSB) has once again demonstrated its commitment to musical excellence, celebrating outstanding achievements at both the Young Musicians of the Gulf (YMOG) competition and the COBIS Music Festival 2025. As BSB marks its 30th anniversary this year, these victories are a testament to the school's dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of artistic and academic excellence. BSB was crowned the overall winner of the COBIS Music Festival 2025, taking home the prestigious Jeremy Hibbins Cup. Among the standout performances, Stella Rudiferia secured 1st place in composition and was awarded the esteemed title of Composer of the Year 2025. Tim took top honours in the piano category, while Stella excelled in strings and George dominated the folk segment. Alex rocked the Rock & Pop category, also securing first place. The Jazz Combo earned a respectable second place, with Annabelle and Aidan also securing runner-up spots in their respective categories. Eashan received a special mention for his performance. In addition to these remarkable accomplishments, BSB's musicians excelled at Young Musicians of the Gulf (YMOG) competition, with Rancheng Xu and Timothy Yu Shin winning the Small Ensemble category and securing the prestigious Best Overall Ensemble title. Stella Rudiferia also continued her success with a 2nd place finish in the Composition category. These achievements exemplify BSB's holistic approach to education, ensuring students excel in academics, the performing and creative arts, and sports. As part of the Inspired Education Group, BSB follows Inspired's Three Pillars approach, which fosters well-rounded individuals prepared for lifelong success.
