Hugo Lucchino takes over the management of France's Villa Noailles, which oversees the Hyères Festival

Hugo Lucchino is the new General Manager of France's Villa Noailles, which oversees, among other things, the renowned Hyères Festival and its fashion competition for young designers. The establishment has been in turmoil since its management was criticised by the French Ministry of Culture last April. Its emblematic founder Jean-Pierre Blanc, who is currently on sick leave, stepped down from his role as General Manager and the Hyères institution launched a recruitment process to find a successor. Minister of Culture Rachida Dati agreed to the appointment, on the unanimous recommendation of the jury, the Villa Noailles centre for contemporary art of national interest said in a press release. Hugo Lucchino is currently working at the Palais Galliera, the fashion museum of the city of Paris, as secretary general, and will take up his new post in the autumn. "I'm delighted with this appointment. Hugo joins us with great artistic sensitivity and valuable management experience to write a new chapter in our history together," said Villa Noailles President Pascale Mussard. "After training in aesthetics, philosophy of art and theory of decorative and applied arts at the University of Paris IV - Sorbonne, in museology, art and fashion history at the École du Louvre and in public administration, management of cultural institutions at Sciences Po Paris, Hugo Lucchino prefigured the Groupement d'intérêt public le Signe, centre national du graphisme, as administrative and financial director, where he later held the position of general secretary". At the Palais Galliera, "he oversaw the completion of extension and renovation work, as well as an internal reorganisation as part of the museum's reopening, and then worked on the design and implementation of the establishment's new scientific and cultural project", said the press release, emphasising how his project "fits perfectly with the history, territory and challenges of Villa Noailles, and testifies to his in-depth knowledge of the fashion and design sectors". As announced last July, the Hyères Festival, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has confirmed its upcoming edition. It will be held over three days, rather than four, from October 16 to 18, 2025.

Artists, gardens, architecture, tempting food, cultural history, beaches. This French town has it all … except the crowds

On a hot Sunday morning in July, my sister Adèle and I walked through the narrow entrance to the Villa Noailles in Hyères, the beautiful French medieval town perched above the sea and lying almost midway between Marseille to the west and Saint-Tropez to the east. We were en route to meet Jean-Pierre Blanc, the director of the villa, for a tour around the extraordinary modernist house, designed by French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens in the early 1920s. What sort of mark would its famous guests have left on it? I had long wanted to visit Hyères to see the concrete-and-glass house. It was commissioned by Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, a superbly glamorous, deep-pocketed aristocratic pair who were friends and patrons of Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Man Ray (who immortalized the villa in his 1929 film, 'Mystères du Château de Dé') and seemingly every other member of the early 20th-century avant-garde.

Festival de Hyères: Villa Noailles board meets as tensions ease

France's Villa Noailles board of directors met on June 11, following weeks of tension around its leadership. The association runs the Festival de Hyères, France's leading fashion and photography competition, and the Design Parade, an annual design festival in the Var region that opens on June 26. Board members presented the finalized budget and financial forecasts for the association's operations. Jean-Pierre Blanc, who founded the Festival de Hyères, stepped down as general director. Interim director Bénédicte Lefeuvre now leads the organization. Beyond this leadership change, the local press recently named Blanc in an article that claimed authorities had opened two investigations, including one allegedly targeting him. Several media outlets, including reported the article. However, the Toulon public prosecutor's office confirmed no investigation involving Blanc. 'The unfounded accusations made by one or more individuals accused of extortion—facts that we have established—do not lead us to conclude that Mr. Jean-Pierre Blanc faces an investigation related to the possession of child pornographic images,' said Samuel Finielz, Toulon's public prosecutor, last Friday. This clarification aimed to ease tensions at Villa Noailles before its upcoming events. It also helped create a more stable environment as the association prepared the 40th-anniversary edition of the Festival de Hyères. Didier Grumbach, former president of the association and former president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, voiced that hope. Grumbach sent a letter to board members and Pascale Mussard, the association's president, to express his support. 'We must view the current situation, I sincerely believe, as a growth crisis that we should address as such, but with composure. I think the Villa Noailles Festival must continue developing, and we should find appropriate solutions in collaboration with public and private partners. We must resolutely meet the challenges facing this industrial and creative sector, which remains so strategic for our country and in which the Festival de Hyères plays such an important role. Finally, the attacks and maneuvers targeting Jean-Pierre Blanc, particularly the most degrading ones, must stop. I wish you a constructive meeting that fosters calm,' Grumbach wrote. Board members now face the task of ensuring the successful organization of Villa Noailles' next major fashion event and preparing for the arrival of the association's next general manager. According to France 3 Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, the association has already launched the recruitment process with a job posting on a cultural professions website. The new director will take office on September 1.
