CIO opens investigation into hostess bar allegations against judge

The state anti-corruption agency said Tuesday it has opened an investigation into allegations that the presiding judge for former President Yoon Suk Yeol's insurrection trial was treated to multiple visits to an expensive hostess bar. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials said it assigned the case to Investigation Unit 3 upon receiving a complaint from several civic groups alleging bribery and anti-graft law violations by Judge Jee Kui-youn of the Seoul Central District Court. Jee has been accused by the liberal Democratic Party of visiting a hostess bar in Seoul's affluent district of Gangnam without paying the cost of 1 million won ($718) to 2 million won per person. The judge addressed the allegations for the first time Monday, saying during Yoon's trial that he has never considered being treated at such places and his typical meal consists of "samgyeopsal" and soju, a reference to the Korean pork belly and rice wine that symbolize the food of commoners. The DP immediately disclosed what it said were photos showing the similarities of a high-end hostess bar's interior and the surroundings in a picture where Jee posed with two other people. The party called for his removal from the bench. In March, Jee was the judge responsible for canceling Yoon's arrest over his martial law bid. The CIO's Investigation Unit 3 is also looking into allegations he abused his power in delivering that ruling. (Yonhap)

JessC, Fauziah Latiff unite in first duet Tak Terpisah at Dekati album launch

AT the launch of her new album Dekati, Australia-based rock princess JessC took centre stage with Malaysian pop diva Fauziah Latiff, known affectionately as Jee, for their debut duet performance of the emotionally powerful song Tak Terpisah (Never Separated). The event transcended cultural and ethnic boundaries, bringing a heartfelt message of unity, love and resilience through music — a performance that brought the crowd to its feet with thunderous applause and cheers. Even before its official release, the Dekati album has already gained traction. The music video for five songs has garnered over 6 million views on YouTube and is making waves in Indonesia, with numerous media outlets covering the story and conducting interviews. The event kicked off with a cinematic medley of JessC's music videos, including Demi Impian, Dekati, Satu Suara Raya, Expose, and the much-anticipated Tak Terpisah. Fans were visibly moved as scenes from the singer's musical journey played across the screen. But the true highlight of the evening was the live duet between JessC and Jee. Dressed in elegant white Malay traditional attire, JessC stood beside Jee, who donned a sleek ponytail and a commanding presence — the two looked as if they had stepped straight out of the album cover. Their harmonised voices delivered the poignant message of 'Tak terpisah walau berbeza' (never separated, even if we are different), touching hearts and uniting the audience in a moment of shared emotion. The performance concluded with fans presenting flowers and gifts, while Jee playfully turned the tables by pretending to be the event's photographer, adding a joyful twist to the heartfelt moment. 'Dekati is a song about having the courage to face life's challenges,' JessC shared onstage yesterday. She recalled her admiration for Jee dating back over a decade, especially after performing Jee's iconic song Dia. Collaborating with her idol on their first duet was the fulfillment of a long-held dream. 'JessC's beauty shines from within,' Jee said warmly. 'The first time I heard the demo of Tak Terpisah, I cried. The song has soul — it speaks of love, respect, togetherness and life. It's a song that resonates with everyone.' Jee also expressed how the song served as a reminder to appreciate love, friendship and family amid the hustle of daily life. JessC, ever grateful and lighthearted, revealed that Jee had recently wrapped filming the drama Sri Kandi, where she played a queen. During filming, Jee had a minor accident falling off a horse, which alarmed the crew, but she fortunately emerged unscathed. Looking ahead, JessC teased that two more duet projects with Jee are in the works, including an upbeat track titled Kawan Baik (Best Friends). When asked how she balances her busy schedule, Jee shared: 'Everyone's life is different. What matters most is knowing how to stand back up after a fall, and respecting life and one another.' JessC added: 'Don't fear failure. Don't let problems defeat you. Life is hard, but we must face it bravely and learn from every fall.' In a lighthearted exchange, JessC asked Jee: 'How would you rate my singing?' Jee laughed and responded: 'You've improved a lot — we've successfully blended our voices.' JessC also proudly showed off a handmade necklace crafted by Jee, symbolising their growing friendship and creative bond. The Tak Terpisah music video was shot in Malaysia, produced by an Australian team, and directed by an American filmmaker. Their collaboration traces back to a concert 10 years ago, where Jee appeared as a guest and the two artistes connected through music. Today, the Dekati album is not only captivating audiences in Malaysia but also sparking a wave of excitement across Indonesia. This cross-cultural success story stands as a testament to the power of friendship, mutual admiration and musical harmony between two talented women who dared to dream — and sing — together. Fans presenting flowers and gifts to Jee and JessC.

Jointly organised by Pertubuhan Komuniti Progresif Kuching (PKPK) and the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the three-kilometre 'walk-with-your-pets' community event celebrated the bond between humans and animals while promoting vaccination awareness and responsible pet ownership. Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who officiated at the event, described the massive turnout as a proud moment for the city. 'Looking around today, my heart is filled with pride to see more than 800 participants and over 150 beloved pets coming together for this meaningful occasion. This shows not only the diversity of our community but also the deep bond between our residents and their pets. 'Pet Walk 2025 is undoubtedly one of the biggest pet-driven community events, if not the largest, in Sarawak. It is a beautiful reflection of Kuching's spirit – a city where people from all walks of life, different races and backgrounds, live together harmoniously, and who share a strong love and care for animals,' he said. Participants and their furry companions walk together during the Pet Walk 2025 event at the MBKS grounds this morning. Meanwhile, PKPK chairman and organising chairman Ryan Jee expressed his gratitude to the mayor for his continuous grassroots support. 'This shows that he (Wee) is not a mayor who just sits in the office but one who comes down to the field with a heart for the people,' said Jee. He also acknowledged contributions from SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury-Wee, the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), the Sarawak Health Department, and main sponsors, including Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, and Boehringer Ingelheim. Jee noted that today's event had successfully attracted a record turnout, and if not the largest in Malaysia, it was certainly the largest pet walk in Sarawak. 'We are not just observing history today — we are making history together,' he said, urging participants to smile for the many cameras capturing the memorable day. Wee (left) mingling with participants while enjoying the lively atmosphere of Pet Walk 2025 at the MBKS compound. Beyond the walk itself, activities included free public health screenings by the Health Department, registration for SSPCA's subsidised pet neutering programme, and pet-related vendor stalls. A special contest, 'Top 10 Most Creative Pets and Owners', invited participants to submit photos ahead of the event for public voting on PKPK's Facebook page. Proceeds from the event—with 50 per cent earmarked for SSPCA—will support the association's various animal welfare initiatives. As families, friends, and pets strolled together through the MBKS grounds, the spirit of unity, compassion, and community pride was unmistakable — leaving pawprints of kindness all across Kuching. Also present were DVSS deputy director Dr Nicholas Jenek and Boehringer Ingelheim Malaysia technical manager Dr Eddie Tan.

The world's best new restaurants in 2025, revealed

While it's nice and familiar to revisit that same restaurant that does your favourite dish over and over again, it's always good to be a bit more adventurous and try something new, too. Exciting new places to eat are launching all the time, after all, and for some fresh inspiration, Condé Nast Traveller has just unveiled its hot list of new restaurants which have opened (or reopened) over the last 12 months. One of these is Acamaya, a modern Mexican restaurant in the Bywater, New Orleans. Coincidentally, Time Out named this iconic city as the best place in the world for food in 2025 – and you can read more on that here. About the restaurant, CN Traveller writes: 'Think zippy shrimp aguachile; thick yellow discs of masa crowned with plump lump crab; and flaky fish that has been butterflied and grilled until crispy-skinned and is swimming in a pool of creamy spicy salsa – served with a side of fresh-made tortillas so you can assemble all the DIY tacos your heart (and stomach) desires.' Another new opening included is Esperit Roca, run by the Roca brothers who have been at the forefront of Catalonia's food scene over the last few years. Along with a boutique hotel and wine cellar, a former military fortress in Girona – specifically its stables – is now home to this brilliant restaurant, which has already gained a Michelin star since it opened back in November. Over in Hong Kong, Jee has been spotlighted as 'the most exciting Chinese restaurant to pop up in the territory since The Chairman.' It's a chic green and white space run by veteran chef Sui Hin-Chi and rising star Oliver Li, and though it's perched in the central district, CN Traveller writes that 'Jee's second-floor location in an office building makes it feel like a bit of a secret.'
