Asheville woman drove 'several miles' after crash that killed pedestrian, warrant alleges

ASHEVILLE - An Asheville woman faces a felony charge after she allegedly drove several miles following an accident on Tunnel Road that left a pedestrian dead May 21. At 9:18 p.m. Wednesday night, North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to a crash involving a pedestrian just outside Asheville city limits on U.S. 70, also known as Tunnel Road, according to Sgt. Haley Onderdonk. An initial investigation showed that Robert Lee Armentrout, 56, of Hendersonville, ran into the roadway near Cardinal Ridge Drive and was struck by a 2014 Jeep Patriot driven by Caroline Elizabeth Laliberte, 24, of Asheville. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Onderdonk said. Laliberte left the scene and drove for "several miles to a friend's house before she had her friend call 911," according to her arrest warrant. The driver allegedly admitted to knowing she was in a wreck and had hit "something" but "wanted to make it back to her friend's house," the warrant says. Onderdonk said that Laliberte left the scene, but did notify authorities and met with law enforcement. She was arrested early in the morning May 22 and charged with felony hit-and-run inflicting serious injury or death, according to court records. She is being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $30,000 bond, or $3,000 to a bondsman. Her court-appointed public defender declined to comment at this time. 3 wanted individuals found in Mt. Juliet in less than 24 hours

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) — Between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, Mt. Juliet authorities said they discovered three wanted individuals — all of whom were from other Middle Tennessee cities — as a result of three separate traffic stops. The Mt. Juliet Police Department posted about the first incident shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Friday, May 16, saying an officer observed a window tint violation as a vehicle traveled from Golden Bear Gateway, which resulted in a traffic stop. Further investigation revealed the 29-year-old Clarksville woman was wanted in Nashville on a sealed indictment for bringing contraband into a jail and had an outstanding warrant for vandalism, according to officials. In addition, she reportedly had marijuana in her possession. Juliet Road Friday afternoon. In addition to driving on a revoked license, the 37-year-old Nashville man was wanted in Nashville for theft, authorities said. Then, on Saturday, May 17, MJPD reported an attentive officer spotted a Jeep Patriot on Pleasant Grove Road with a temporary tag that not only expired in 2022, but also belonged to a Chrysler 300. ⏩ After stopping the vehicle, law enforcement said they discovered the 38-year-old Nashville man behind the wheel had active warrants out of Robertson County for driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license. 'Great work by our team in keeping another wanted individual off the streets and our community safe,' the department wrote on social media after Saturday morning's incident. No additional details have been released about these three incidents, including the identities of the wanted individuals. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Milwaukee woman was driving 102 mph when she caused deadly crash, prosecutors say

A 32-year-old Milwaukee woman was driving 102 mph in a 35 mph zone when she caused a three-car crash, prosecutors said, killing a woman and injuring two other people. Milwaukee County prosecutors charged A'Jena K. B. Wynn-Howard with first-degree reckless homicide and two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety in the May 10 crash that killed Tonya Missouri-Smith, 55. According to the criminal complaint: Just before midnight on North 76th Street, Wynn-Howard crashed into the back of Missouri-Smith's Chevrolet Traverse, which then crashed into a parked Jeep Patriot. The Jeep Patriot was occupied by a 28-year-old woman, and the crash turned it onto its side. Missouri-Smith and her 18-year-old son were on their way to their family business to close it for the night. She was turning right onto North 76th Street when the crash occurred. Missouri-Smith suffered several blunt-force trauma injuries, including brain bleeding, a severed spinal cord and broken ribs, and she died at the scene. Her son continued to have hip pain from the crash. The woman in the parked Jeep Patriot suffered brain bleeding and fractured vertebrae. Wynn-Howard climbed into the back seat of a squad car belonging to an officer who was redirecting traffic and apparently fell asleep. When the officer discovered her, prosecutors say she said, "That's my car, I crashed." According to prosecutors, she also said, "Take me to jail. I crashed that car," and "Did I kill anybody?" Data from the airbag monitor showed that five seconds before the crash, Wynn-Howard was driving 96 mph and increased in the seconds before the crash. A Milwaukee County court commissioner set bond at $40,000 on May 15. Wynn-Howard faces up to 85 years in prison if convicted of all three felony counts.
