Jacksonville Jaguars' Day 3 selection named team's 'best value pick' by The Athletic

Jacksonville Jaguars' Day 3 selection named team's 'best value pick' by The Athletic One of the Jacksonville Jaguars' Day 3 selections was named the team's "best value pick" by The Athletic. Which of the Jacksonville Jaguars' nine selections would you consider their best value pick? Each of the 32 NFL beat writers for The Athletic answered this question for their respective teams. When it came to the Jaguars, Jeff Howe selected Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten, who Jacksonville took in the fourth round. GM James Gladstone thought that landing Tuten at this point in the draft was a pretty good value as well because he didn't think the running back would be available at that point. "I must say once Tuten ran that 40, I don't know that I would have guessed that he would be available on Day 3, but nonetheless, he found himself there taken off pretty quickly at 104," Gladstone said after the draft via Jaguars on SI. Tuten was the fastest running back in this year's draft, running a 4.32-second 40 at the NFL combine. After a productive 2023 season for Tuten that included rushing for 875 yards at 5.0 yards per attempt, he put together a career season this past year, rushing for 1,150 yards at a hefty 6.3 yards per rush. With that speed, Tuten brings added big-play ability to the Jaguars' backfield. Among all college running backs in 2024, Tuten's 6.3 yards per rush ranked 20th. He was also 15th in missed tackles forced, 15th in rushes of 10-plus yards, and 10th in rushes of 15 or more yards, according to PFF. With Tuten and LeQuint Allen joining Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby, there quickly became a lot of competition at the running back position for the Jaguars. But understandably so, because this is a position that will be relied on heavily under Liam Coen in his offensive system.

49ers to release Pro Bowl FB Kyle Juszczyk: Sources

By Matt Barrows, Jeff Howe and Dianna Russini The San Francisco 49ers have told Kyle Juszczyk that they are releasing the Pro Bowl fullback, league and team sources informed The Athletic on Monday night. Juszczyk, who turns 34 in late April, has been named to nine consecutive Pro Bowls, giving the 49ers a unique threat who can block while also being a weapon in the passing game. The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder has caught at least 14 passes in 11 consecutive seasons, including 30 as recently as 2021. 💔🧃 — George Kittle (@gkittle46) March 11, 2025 This story will be updated.

Jimmy Garoppolo, agrees to re-sign with Rams on 1-year deal: Sources

By Jeff Howe, Dianna Russini and Lauren Smith Jimmy Garoppolo and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to terms on a new one-year, $11-million deal, according to league sources. Garoppolo was the No. 10 quarterback and No. 123 overall player on The Athletic's updated top 150 free agents list. The 33-year-old quarterback spent the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Rams as the backup to Matthew Stafford. He played in one game, starting the regular-season finale — the Rams rested their starters having already clinched the NFC West and a trip to the playoffs — and threw for 334 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Advertisement A second-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2014 NFL Draft, Garoppolo has played 11 seasons in the NFL. He spent the first three-plus seasons of his career with New England before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers midway through the 2017 season. He made most of his 64 career regular-season starts with San Francisco, starting 55 games from 2017 to 2022, and threw for 13,599 yards, 82 touchdowns and 42 interceptions with the 49ers. In 2019, he started all 16 regular-season games, posting career bests in passing yards (3,978) and passing touchdowns (27) on the way to the 49ers' Super Bowl LIV appearance. He was also the starter during San Francisco's run to the NFC Championship Game two seasons later. Garoppolo played one season with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, starting six of the Raiders' first eight games, before signing with the Rams last offseason. In 82 regular-season games (64 starts) in his career, he has passed for 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns and 52 interceptions, and rushed for another seven touchdowns. This story will be updated.

Jaguars tackle defensive line in The Athletic's 2025 NFL mock draft

The 32 NFL beat writers for The Athletic recently put together a group 2025 NFL mock draft. So who did the Jacksonville Jaguars come away with? At pick No. 5, Jeff Howe had the Jaguars adding to the trenches and taking Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham. As we saw from Philadelphia in the Super Bowl, there's no such thing as too much talent at the line of scrimmage. The Jaguars' defensive front as a unit in 2024 ranked 32nd in pass rush win rate and 27th in run stop rate. A good defensive front can provide the secondary--another need for the Jaguars--with some much-needed help.
