49ers to release Pro Bowl FB Kyle Juszczyk: Sources

New York Times11-03-2025

By Matt Barrows, Jeff Howe and Dianna Russini
The San Francisco 49ers have told Kyle Juszczyk that they are releasing the Pro Bowl fullback, league and team sources informed The Athletic on Monday night.
Juszczyk, who turns 34 in late April, has been named to nine consecutive Pro Bowls, giving the 49ers a unique threat who can block while also being a weapon in the passing game.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder has caught at least 14 passes in 11 consecutive seasons, including 30 as recently as 2021.

Pro Football Focus has doubts about Seahawks defensive line

Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams was fantastic throughout 2024, recording 11.0 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. The Seahawks also received quality play around Williams, with veteran Jarran Reed displaying an ageless skillset before earning another contract from John Schneider this offseason. At EDGE, players like Boye Mafe and Derick Hall enjoyed effective seasons, but must continue proving capable of showing improvement. Schneider signed a veteran pass rusher in DeMarcus Lawrence as insurance this offseason, and sophomore first-round defensive tackle Byron Murphy II must stay healthy in 2025. Pro Football Focus recently ranked every defensive line unit in the NFL. Though they acknowledge Seattle's group has potential, there are also many questions present. The Seahawks d-line ranks 23rd in the league as a result. "Despite missing some time with injury in 2024, veteran interior defender Leonard Williams earned the highest PFF overall grade of his career in his 10th NFL season," Zoltán Buday wrote. "The USC product's 87.1 mark ranked fourth among 118 interior defenders. While there is some potential along the defensive line around Williams, if the Seahawks are to be considered an average unit in 2025, they need 32-year-old Jarran Reed to continue to play at a high level and fourth-year edge defender Boye Mafe to take the next step and become an above-average pass rusher." Williams should continue being his dominant self, but Mike Macdonald's defensive line will need more from his surrounding castmates. Reed is expected to maintain his effectiveness, but ascending talents like Mafe, Hall, and Murphy II are projections. Hopefully Seattle's defensive line outperforms these expectations in 2025.

A pair of Ravens legends land on an elite list a quarter century in the making

Two Ravens legends claim their place on a list of the best draft picks of the past quarter century. Few can wake up in the morning and honestly say they are the best at something. It's a title that carries great responsibility and, depending on one's perspective, immense pressure. Hearing one's name called by the Baltimore Ravens during an NFL Draft is the culmination of a lifetime's worth of work and dedication. Fans, teammates, coaches, and the media hope their team has landed a baller. Through the years, Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta have elevated this franchise with key free-agent acquisitions and home-run draft choices. Recently, two of Ozzie's discoveries, Ed Reed and Lamar Jackson, landed on an elite list that is certainly worthy of discussion. Ed Reed and Lamar Jackson land on a list of the top 25 draft picks of the past quarter century Here's one that's worth your attention. Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon cooked up his ranking of the Top 25 NFL Draft Picks from the 1st Quarter of the 21st Century. Naturally, the temptation was to investigate to see if any Ravens were on the list. Two made the cut. Ed Reed cracked the list at 19. Lamar Jackson landed a little higher, earning a top-ten mention at number nine. Reed, a 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was a five-time First-team All-Pro and a three-time Second-team All-Pro who was named to nine Pro Bowls. He also won a Super Bowl. Jackson's career story is still being written, but it's off to a good start. He's won two MVP trophies. He has also notched three First-Team All-Pro mentions and a spot on four Pro Bowl rosters in his first seven NFL seasons. Reed earned his place on the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Perhaps Lamar will earn similar honors when he determines it's time to hang up his cleats.
