Classic Rock Icon Is Sick of Being Treated Like a Replacement: ‘I Belong There'
Cathy Richardson has been the vocalist and guitarist of 70s and 80s rock band Jefferson Starship for 17 years, and she's sick of fans still comparing her to founder Grace Slick. "It always makes me roll my eyes when people are like, 'You're no Grace Slick and you never will be!' " she told Ulitmate Classic Rock in a June 6 interview. "It's like, well, okay, of course, but it doesn't mean I don't belong here," she responded to the criticism. "I mean she thinks I belong here. [Other band members] Paul Kantner, Donny Baldwin, David Freiberg, I mean, everybody in the band thinks I belong there." Slick founded the "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" band with Paul Kantner in 1974, and remained with the band until his death in 2016, besides a break from 1984 to 1992. Slick left the project in 1984, but continued to have a relationship with band members including Richardson, who joined the band in 2008 and is still performing with them today. Slick and Richardson even wrote a song together in 2017 called "It's About Time" inspired by the political climate around that time. The two share a lot of mutual respect for each other, and aren't fazed by comparisons. "Grace Slick is an icon, and I understand what an honor it is to be in the band singing her songs and everything," Richardson told UCR. "I've been a fan for a long time. I mean, it's like: Janis [Joplin], Grace and Nancy Wilson, for me. She's just like the queen of rock and roll, and so of course, I don't take it lightly, but I also, as a fan, I knew she never took herself that seriously to begin with." Now celebrating the 50th anniversary since its original inception, Jefferson Starship is still touring and trying to uphold the legacy started by Slick and Kantner. "We've just built it and built it and built it," said Richardson. "I think, by turning in great shows and playing the songs people want to hear. … Our goal has been to get Jefferson Starship back to its former glory, and we've been doing it." ‘70s Rock Legend, 86, Stuns Fans With His Ageless Voice
'70s Rock Legend, 86, Stuns Fans With His Ageless Voice originally appeared on Parade. David Freiberg, 86, has a singing voice that defies time. A founding member of '70s rock sensations Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, Freiberg co-wrote one of the band's biggest hits, Jane. At a recent Jefferson Starship performance celebrating the band's 50th anniversary, the 86-year-old showcased his ageless voice, which left fans stunned and in of the performance shows Freiberg effortlessly moving about the stage, belting out the famous lyrics to Jane, which were originally sung by Mickey Thomas. The 1979 rock hit is filled with high-energy riffs, sung in a high register that channels the song's emotion and intensity. Freiberg hits every note, his voice scaling to the top of his register, with flawless ease. Freiberg's vocals left fans in awe (honestly, us too). He sounds like he's back in 1979, with the voice of a much younger man. It's a stunning performance worth watching over and over quickly got to work, complimenting Freiberg's vocals. One wrote, 'To sing like that at his age is truly rare and fabulous,' while another shared, 'Wow.' 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 '70s Rock Legend, 86, Stuns Fans With His Ageless Voice first appeared on Parade on Jun 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Kansas and Jefferson Starship tour will carry on to Ledge Amphitheater
KQRS may be edging away from classic rock, but there are plenty of hits from the '70s and '80s on Twin Cities stages this summer. The Ledge Amphitheater has added Kansas and Jefferson Starship to its summer lineup, it announced on Tuesday. The classic rock acts will come to the Waite Park venue on Sept. 19. Kansas, which released its first album in 1974, has sold more than 30 million records during its lengthy career on the back of hits like "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return." Its current lineup features original drummer Phil Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams. However, longtime drum tech and frequent fill-in drummer Eric Holmquist will play drums on this tour while Ehart recovers from a heart attack, according to an announcement from the band. While Kansas is headlining the show, Jefferson Starship, which formed after the dissolution of Jefferson Airplane, isn't short on hits, either. The band has surfaced on charts numerous times since its debut in 1974, including top-10 positions for songs like "Miracles" and "Count On Me." A venue presale will take place on Wednesday, April 24. The access code can be snagged by signing up for the venue's newsletter. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25.
