Five tied for early lead at Evian Champs

Five women fired rounds of 65 to take the first-round lead yesterday at the Evian Championship, the fourth of five LPGA majors on the season. Americans Jennifer Kupcho and Andrea Lee, Australians Grace Kim and Gabriela Ruffels, and Leona Maguire of Ireland all share the lead at 6-under at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France. Despite the crowd at the top, Maguire could perhaps nevertheless claim day-one bragging rights after she made a hole-in-one as part of her round, acing the par-3 second hole with her tee shot from 150m. A stroke back from the leading bunch at 66 is Minjee Lee of Australia, who won the Women's PGA Championship in June. Two more strokes behind after rounds of 67 sits a group of nine that includes world No 1 Nelly Korda, defending champion Ayake Furue of Japan and another native of Japan, Mao Saigo, who won the season's first major at The Chevron Championship in April. Bogies blotted the day for New Zealand's world No 3 Lydia Ko, who shot a two-over 73 to be eight shots behind the leaders and tied in 76th place. Ko, who won the event in 2015, is now in danger of missing the cut. — Field Level Media / additional reporting APL

Jennifer Kupcho in tie for Evian lead, Nelly Korda makes strong start

EVIAN, France - American Jennifer Kupcho took part of a five-way tie for the Evian Championship lead with a six-under first round of 65 on July 10, with Nelly Korda and Minjee Lee among the big names in contention. Kupcho, a former runner-up in the Evian, has struggled for form in recent years but claimed her first LPGA Tour title since 2022 in June. She has not finished in the top 10 at a major since winning the 2022 Chevron Championship, but rounded off an excellent opening day with a birdie on the 17th hole and an eagle on the par-five 18th. Kupcho is level at the top of the leaderboard with compatriot Andrea Lee, Australian duo Grace Kim and Gabriela Ruffels, and Ireland's Leona Maguire. 'I think it's just made me relax a little bit, just to not have to worry about anything,' Kupcho said of her recent win in New Jersey. 'I can play whatever events I want. Other than that (it) hasn't changed a whole lot. 'I'm still not playing my best I would say so I'm just kind of sticking with it, knowing I can still win even if I may not be at my best.' Maguire, chasing her first major title, enjoyed a spectacular moment in her 65 with a hole-in-one on the par-three second hole, her 11th of the day. 'Looked good in the air. You're never sure on that hole until the ball actually lands,' said the European Solheim Cup star. 'Sort of a perfect morning for it. Not much wind which is nice, especially on that tee box.' Singapore's Shannon Tan ended the first round tied at 76th, with players such as Lydia Ko and Lilia Vu, after carding a two-over 73. Solid Korda There are some threatening challengers already lining up just behind the leading quintet, with world number one Korda only two shots behind after a 67. The American is targeting a third major title and first since last year's Chevron. She made six birdies and two bogeys in her opening round to put herself firmly in the mix. 'A couple of parts of my game helped me and rescued me, and the other parts let me down,' she said. 'That's golf. Just going to try and figure it out on the range.' Nelly Korda, of the US, made six birdies and two bogeys in her opening round to put herself firmly in the mix. PHOTO: AFP Australia's Minjee Lee is alone in sixth place on five-under after making four birdies in her last seven holes to card a 65. The world number six is among the title favourites in France this week after sealing her third major crown in June in the women's PGA Championship. She is targeting a second Evian success after her maiden triumph in 2021, although she has not finished in the top 10 in any of her other nine appearances. 'I feel like as the years go by this (becomes) a blur but all the memories and vibes come back obviously every time I am back, once I'm here,' Lee said. AFP

Maguire's hole-in-one gives her share of 1st-round lead at Evian Championship

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Leona Maguire made a hole-in-one at the Evian Championship on the way to a 6-under 65 in the first round Thursday and a five-way share of the lead. Having started on the back nine at the fourth major of the year, Maguire aced the par-3 second hole — her 11th — at Evian Resort Golf Club, sinking her tee shot from 164 yards. 'It was just taking a little bit off an 8-iron for me. Looked good in the air. You're never sure on that hole until the ball actually lands,' she said. 'Sort of a perfect morning for it. Not much wind which is nice, especially on that tee box.' The Irishwoman was joined on 65 by American duo Andrea Lee and Jennifer Kupcho as well as Australians Grace Kim and Gabriela Ruffels, a former tennis player in doubles. Minjee Lee, who won the Women's PGA Championship last month for her third major title, was alone in sixth place after carding a 66. Top-ranked Nelly Korda was a stroke behind her in a tie for seventh. Korda is seeking her first win of the season and third major title. No. 2-ranked Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, bidding to win a major for the first time, was tied for 16th after a 68 in a group featuring Lottie Woad. The 21-year-old college student from England was thrust into the spotlight after delivering one of the most stunning wins by an amateur — by six shots over a strong field at the Women's Irish Open on Sunday. Woad, the world's No. 1 amateur and winner of last year's Augusta National Women's Amateur, is now on the cusp of securing a place on the professional tours. English golfer Charley Hull had to withdraw from the first round after collapsing to the ground twice because of a virus. Organizers said Hull underwent medical checks but did not have any serious health issues. ___ AP golf:

LPGA announces new Dow Impact Award, featuring a fan vote and $25,000 cash prize

The LPGA and Dow have launched a new initiative that recognizes excellence both inside the ropes and in the community. The new Dow Impact Award focuses on the company's three core criteria: innovation, inclusion and sustainability. An Executive Selection Committee has identified the first six nominees: sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn, Jennifer Kupcho, Gaby Lopez, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang. On Oct. 7, 2025, the committee will announce the two finalists and from there, fans will be able to vote for the winner, though the committee will also have a say. Winners of the annual award will receive a $25,000 cash prize along with a matching contribution to their charity of choice. The runner-up will also receive $10,000. The winner will announced Nov. 6. "I think for us it's all about legacy. It's about leaving a lasting impact," said Carlos Padilla II, head of Global Sports Partnerships at Dow and executive director of the Dow Championship. "What does that impact look like, and who are the role models that are already doing that? When you look at the logo, you see the torch, the carrying of the torch and passing the torch on. "So for us, that's in the spirit of everything we talk around our partnership, whether it be the tournament here or our marketing partnership that we have with the LPGA. It's living those values every day. We share all those values with the LPGA. That's why this partnership is so authentic and so real." The Jutanugarn sisters are past winners of the Dow Championship (2021) along with Jennifer Kupcho (2022), who partnered with Lizette Salas. Fans can go here to read more about each of the nominees. "The nominees, they're all fantastic players, and I think, the bottom line, all these women out here, they all have a story to tell," said Dow ambassador Suzann Pettersen. "I think this award can kind of amplify all those great commitments that these women do outside of the golf course. "They're great champions in the way they carry themselves. They're great representatives for the LPGA, for women's sports in general."
