Ronald Blythe's book Akenfield to be adapted for the stage

A classic book exploring agricultural life in Suffolk is being adapted into "something really beautiful" for the Portrait of an English Village, written by the Suffolk author Ronald Blythe, gives an insight into what it was like to live in a rural village from 1880 to in 1969, the fictionalised account of village life was based on interviews Mr Blythe had carried out with three generations of neighbours in Charsfield and into a film in 1974, it is set to be transformed into a play by Suffolk performing arts company SHAKE Festival, which is run by creative director Jenny Hall. "We feel really quite honoured to have been granted the rights because Ronnie Blythe was very careful with who he let loose on it," she said."We're all passionate about it because it gives very poor people at the bottom of the ladder a voice and that is very moving."It's extraordinary to link up with the past, and the memories in the book reach back to the 1880s because there are old people in the book remembering their childhood." The voices and perspectives in the late Mr Blythe's book belong to everyone from the survivors of the Great War and young farm workers to schoolteachers and Hall and her team are now on the hunt for talented local people with "proper Suffolk voices" to bring those people and their memories to life."It's a really fun play, but then now and again it really catches you in the back of the throat," added Ms Hall, who will direct the play."It's a very flexible sort of theatre and I am hoping that there will be people around that have the time, inclination and the passion to come on this adventure for us."We're going to try and make something really beautiful in a small way, locally, and we'll see how far it goes." Akenfield, written by Glenn Wilhide, will be performed at Framlingham Old Theatre, The Cut in Halesworth, Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich, the Food Museum in Stowmarket and Saxmundham Market Hall, between 24 September and 11 auditions will be held between 18:00 and 19:00 BST at the Benhall and Sternfield Ex-Servicemen and Village Club for the next three Wednesdays. All eyes on decision to move Newtown's iconic red phone box

Moving Newtown's last remaining red phone box would improve the appearance of an historic town centre building, a report has found. The disused Grade II-listed telephone kiosk outside The Exchange bar and Regent cinema near Broad Street has been out of use for several years and no longer contains a telephone or coin box. Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has been discussing for several years about moving the callbox to High Street and repurpose it as a community asset, such as artwork or storing a defibrillator, allowing it to be more widely appreciated, but no final decision has been made. READ MORE | Popular Newtown pub wants to use historic phone box as photo booth A heritage impact assessment took place earlier this year by Carmarthenshire-based archaeologists Jenny Hall and Paul Sambrook, of Trysor, which found that the relocation of the phone box would improve the appearance of the former Flannel Exchange, describing it as "incongruous" in its current location, and that its small-scale is "out of proportion" for the building. "Overall, this report finds that when all impacts associated with removing the telephone kiosk and placing it in a busier part of Newtown are considered, that will on balance have a low positive impact,' Trysor told the town council. "Although the telephone kiosk will be in a new location, it does not have strong links with its current location, and it will be better managed with a new purpose, which will ensure it survives and will be appreciated and understood by many more people." Councillors will discuss the report at a meeting on Monday and a letter from a member of the public who suggested moving the phone box to High Street near the former Post Office "so we have memories of days gone by and two fine pieces of that age" and that it would be "more central to the town centre so that not only local and visitors can see them".

Body found in forest search for missing runner

A body has been found in a forest search for a runner who went missing five days ago, police said. Jenny Hall, 23, was last seen leaving her home at Barracks Farm, Tow Law, County Durham, on Tuesday, just after 15:00 GMT. Her red Ford Focus was found parked on the B6278 between Eggleston and Stanhope on Wednesday. Durham Police said Ms Hall's body had been found in a "very remote area of Teesdale" shortly after 09:30 GMT on Sunday. Formal identification has yet to take place but Ms Hall's family have been informed. The force said it was not treating her death as suspicious and a file was being prepared for the coroner. Mountain rescue teams have been searching for Ms Hall since Tuesday. Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team led the search alongside the police and by Friday had covered 60 miles (97km) of paths and tracks. More than a dozen mountain rescue team members helped and on Saturday seven drones, 10 mountain rescue dogs and more than 60 volunteers took part. Ms Hall was a keen long distance runner and was known to run through Hamsterley Forest, which is the largest in the county and spans 4,942 acres (2,000ha). Earlier this week, rescue volunteer Peter Bell said the area was difficult to search. "The biggest challenge is the area size itself and the terrain," he said. "The terrain is muddy and boggy."
