St Johnstone flop becomes English non-league title hero

Luke Jephcott endured a footballing nightmare at St Johnstone. And, after the former Perth striker's career descended even further in Wales, the 25-year-old has bounced back to become a promotion hero in the SIXTH tier of English football. Jephcott was signed by Steven MacLean in the summer of 2023, having built a reputation as a reliable goalscorer at Plymouth Argyle. He made a promising League Cup debut at Alloa but his lack of a pre-season became more exposed when the Premiership got underway. Jephcott made one only three starts in the league, the last of those away to Hearts in November. MacLean's successor, Craig Levein, didn't see a future for him at McDiarmid Park and a permanent transfer to Newport County was agreed in the January window. Levein said: 'Jephcott, for me, was a player who you need when you're dominating games and gets loads of chances. 'Because the best part of his game is finishing. He just doesn't fit with what we need right at this moment in time. 'If we were dominating games, staying in the opposition half and creating chances then he's one you'd want in the squad.' Life didn't improve in EFL League Two, however. Jephcott played 16 games for Newport in the second half of the 2023/24 season, then another 16 during the current campaign. He still couldn't get on the scoresheet and dropped into the National League South in February with Truro City. Jephcott found the net at the first time of asking and has gone on to help Truro secure a dramatic last-day title triumph on goal difference (three goals better than Torquay United), grabbing the opener in a 5-2 victory over St Albans City. They have become the first club from Cornwall to reach the National League, the division just below the EFL. Jephcott, who scored five goals in 14 starts, still has a year left on his contract with Newport.

Askey praises Truro players after win at Hampton

Truro City manager John Askey says he saw some of his players' best-ever performances in their 3-1 win at Hampton and Richmond. The Tinners ended a three-game scoring drought away from home to consolidate National League South's final play-off place. The win sees seventh-placed Truro go eight points clear of ninth-placed Hampton and six points behind leaders Dorking Wanderers. Tom Harrison glanced a dominant Truro ahead after 25 minutes before new loan signing Luke Jephcott converted Jaze Kabia's 56th-minute cross to double the lead. Hampton had Alex Wall sent off for his reaction after he had given away a penalty with 15 minutes to go and Kabia converted from 12 yards. Alfie Williams scored a consolation for the hosts with four minutes left as Truro won away for the first time since 21 December. "I think we looked really strong today, there was a lot of really good performances," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall. "Some players I thought played the best football I've seen them play since I've been here. "We looked strong against a good side and we just basically stopped them playing and dominated the game from start to finish." Askey added: "I'm obviously disappointed with the goal we conceded, which was just sloppy, but to come here and put a performance on like that when there was so much on it, because it's like getting six points. "It keeps them a big distance away from us now and there's one or two teams at the top that lost so we've got to keep going. "If we put performances like that in then we're going to win more games than we we'll lose." The goal for Jephcott was his first in senior football since April 2023 as the former Plymouth Argyle forward began his loan from Newport County. Askey says he was pleased with how Jephcott fared, having not started a game since 29 December. "First half you could tell he'd not played for a little bit, but I think the longer the game went on, even before the goal, you could see that he was starting to find his feet. "To score a goal like he's done today just shows that he's got good quality and he is only going to get better. "We've got good competition now in most positions so it's really pleasing."
