Abdullah Mason stops Jeremia Nakathila in 5th round to set up WBO lightweight title shot

Abdullah Mason is heading toward a shot at the world title. Mason (18-0, 16 KOs) stopped Jeremia Nakathila at the beginning of Round 5 in their ESPN-televised main event bout Saturday night from the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Advertisement It was a mature performance from Mason, 21, who didn't rush his work and boxed behind a sharp southpaw jab. Mason rocked Nakathila with a left hand in the final minute of Round 3, but Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) was saved by the bell. Mason continued his success into Round 4, consistently finding the target with his powerful backhand and wobbling Nakathila on every connection. Nakathila, 35, complained to his corner team and the referee that he couldn't see out of his left eye between the fourth and fifth rounds. The referee called the ringside doctor to examine Nakathila's eye at the beginning of Round 5, and upon hearing that Nakathila couldn't see out of the eye, he advised the referee to stop the bout. Mason vs. Nakathila was upgraded to the main-event slot late Friday after Keyshawn Davis' fight with Edwin De Los Santos was canceled just 24 hours before it was scheduled to take place because Davis missed weight by more than four pounds at the weigh-in and the two sides could not reach an agreement to allow the bout to continue. Davis was subsequently stripped of his WBO lightweight title. Advertisement Mason, Uncrowned's runner-up for 2024 Prospect of the Year, is the No. 2-ranked contender for the belt formerly held by Davis, and he will likely be ordered to face Sam Noakes, the WBO No. 1-ranked lightweight, for the vacant championship later this year. Noakes was planning a fight with Ireland's Jono Carroll in August, sources close to the situation told Uncrowned. But with a world title shot looming, the bout may now not go ahead. "That should be workable, and that's something we definitely want," Mason said about a potential Noakes fight for the WBO title. "We want to work toward those world titles." Abdullah Mason vs. Jeremia Nakathila live results, round-by-round updates, ring walks after Keyshawn Davis' weight miss

Abdullah Mason vs. Jeremia Nakathila headlines Saturday's event after Keyshawn Davis massively missed weight for his fight against Edwin De Los Santos. () Uncrowned has Abdullah Mason vs. Jeremia Nakathila live results, round-by-round updates, highlights, ring walks and start time for the Mason vs. Nakathila fight card on Saturday night at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Mason vs. Nakathila is the new main event after Keyshawn Davis vs. Edwin De Los Santos was canceled Friday evening. Davis was more than four pounds over the 135-pound lightweight championship limit at the official weigh-in and was thusly stripped of his WBO lightweight world title. Advertisement Davis' and De Los Santos' teams then attempted to negotiate a deal, which would've allowed the fight to take place. The teams discussed a rehydration clause and a six-figure financial penalty but ultimately could not reach an agreement, so the fight was called off at the eleventh hour. With Davis losing his title, the stakes have been raised for Mason's bout with Nakathila. Mason, the WBO's No. 2-ranked lightweight contender, will likely be ordered to face WBO No. 1 Sam Noakes for the vacant title later this year. However, Nakathila could snatch that position with an upset win. It is the third bout for Mason (18-0, 16 KOs), Uncrowned's runner-up for 2024 Prospect of the Year, in the first half of 2025. Mason, 21, stopped Manuel Jaimes in February and then retired Carlos Ornelas in his first regional title bout in April. Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) is on a three-fight win streak after back-to-back second-round knockout defeats at the hands of Raymond Muratalla and Ernesto "Tito" Mercado in 2023. Nakathila extended Shakur Stevenson the 12-round distance in their 2021 WBO interim super featherweight title bout. Advertisement In the night's co-feature, Kelvin Davis (15-0, 8 KOs), brother of Keyshawn, steps up to 10 rounds to face Nahir Albright (16-2, 7 KOs). Keyshawn defeated Albright by majority decision in October 2023, but the result was changed to a no-contest after Davis tested positive for marijuana. Now, Albright takes on a second Davis brother on Saturday. Mason vs. Nakathila begins at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with the main card starting at 10 p.m. on ESPN and main event ring walks expected at 10:45 p.m. ET.
