Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves is just happy to be wanted

Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves is just happy to be wanted "It's nice to just be wanted."#Commanders special teams ace Jeremy Reaves earned himself a contract extension today. His one-year extension now has him staying in Washington through 2026. Beyond well-deserved. — Natalie Spala (@_nataliespala) June 11, 2025 It's been a long journey for Washington Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves at just 28 years old. A former undrafted free agent, Reaves first signed with Washington's practice squad in 2018 and has been with the franchise ever since. Of course, there were plenty of twists, turns, bumps, and bruises along the way. Reaves has been cut, re-signed to the practice squad, bounced back and forth between the practice squad to the 53-man roster, but everything changed in 2022. For the first time in his career, Reaves made the initial 53-man roster. There would be no more sending him back down to the practice squad. Reaves thrived on special teams, earning first-team All-Pro honors and a trip to the Pro Bowl. He was also a reliable backup safety when his number was called, too. Last season, Reaves was set to become an unrestricted free agent. The timing wasn't great, as Washington fired the previous coaching staff and front office. Yet, as the Commanders allowed several free agents to leave, they signed Reaves to a two-year deal. It didn't take long for Reaves to become a favorite of Dan Quinn and Adam Peters. On Wednesday, ahead of Day 2 of minicamp, Reaves signed a one-year extension with Washington. He is now signed through the 2026 season. Reaves, of course, offered a humble response. "When I first got here, everything that I went through, all the tough days I went through, I got a chance to talk to AP and DQ before practice and just tell them, 'it's nice just to be wanted,' and feel like what I do matters," Reaves told reporters after Wednesday's practice. "I'm filled with gratitude. I was just talking to some young guys and telling them, if you take anything from me, just understand that the turtle does win the race." Reaves made it clear that there is plenty of work to do. There is no resting on his laurels. He will be just as motivated in 2025 as he was in 2018 and 2022. No one is more deserving of success than Reaves. To see him finally rewarded and respected makes everyone happy. He's earned it.

Noah Brown carted off field at Commanders minicamp. Jeremy Reaves gets extended, AP source says

Washington Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown was carted off the field after getting injured during minicamp in Ashburn, Virginia, on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear what happened to cause the injury or its extent. Reporters in attendance reported Brown walked off slowly after making a catch, threw his helmet in frustration when he reached the sideline and was carted up the hill to the practice facility. Brown, who caught Jayden Daniels' desperation pass against Chicago for one of the Commanders' signature moments last season, missed the final four games of last season and their playoff run to the NFC championship game with a kidney injury. He re-signed on a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million. Washington also took care of some longer-term business Wednesday, signing safety and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves to a one-year extension through the 2026 NFL season, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not announce the deal. 'Grateful for the journey, the fans, this team and organization,' Reaves posted on social media. 'Much more in store!' Reaves, now 28, was an All-Pro selection on special teams in 2022. He missed the majority of 2023 after getting sidelined by a torn ACL five games into that season. ___ AP NFL:

Now signed through 2026. — John Keim (@john_keim) June 11, 2025 The Commanders initially had Reaves on a two-year contract. According to Spotrac, his deal was worth $6 million, with a little over $2 million guaranteed at the signing of the deal. Reaves reportedly earned $1.1 million during the 2024 NFL season. Next season, Reaves is set to make a little over $2 million. With his current deal in place, Reaves was looking at a potential run in free agency next spring. However, the new deal will keep him on board through the 2026 NFL season. Right now, the financial details of the contract are unknown. Although Reaves hasn't cracked a consistent role on Washington's defense, he's been a major contributor to the special teams. When he first joined the organization in 2018, Revaes played just two percent of Washington's snaps on defense, while appearing in 71 percent of their special teams plays. In 2020, he picked up 43 percent of the defense's snaps. In 2021, he saw another increase, taking the field for 56 percent of the snaps. In 2020, Reaves produced 25 tackles and two pass deflections. In the following year, he combined for 29 tackles. During the 2022 season, Reaves finished the year with a career-high 33 tackles. As a special-teamer, he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2022 and was also First-Team All-Pro. Last season, Reaves appeared in 17 games for the Commanders. He had 20 total tackles and a forced fumble. Considering how Reaves entered the NFL, he's quite a success story. In 2018, Reaves was entering the league out of South Alabama. He went undrafted during the 2018 NFL Draft and ended up signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Reaves was viewed as an offseason standout, the Eagles didn't make room for him on the roster, leading the undrafted rookie to hit the cut list for Philadelphia. Washington took advantage of the Eagles waiving Reaves by bringing him on the practice squad. In December 2018, Reaves was promoted to the active roster. He made his NFL debut the same week. Since then, Reaves has been a key player for the Commanders and will continue to be for the next two seasons.
