Delhi thrash RCB to reach WPL play-offs
Delhi Capitals beat defending Women's Premier League champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru by nine wickets to book their place in the play-offs. Australia's Jess Jonassen and India's Shafali Verma added an unbroken stand of 146 for the second wicket as Delhi reached their target of 148 inside 15.3 finished with 80 from 43 balls and Jonassen made 61 from 38, as former Australia skipper Meg Lanning was the only batter to depart for five. All-rounder Ellyse Perry's 60 not out from 47 balls - her fourth half-century of the tournament so far - was in vain for RCB as she struggled for support from the rest of the line-up. Delhi reached the final in the previous two editions of the competition, but lost both. Whoever finishes top of the table by the end of the group stage will progress straight into the final on 15 March while second and third place will play in the Eliminator two days before. Lanning leads Aussie super show for Delhi in WPL
Meg Lanning has regained her position as the Women's Premier League all-time leading run-scorer with a masterful knock for Delhi Capitals on a day when two of her Australian teammates shared the glory. Jess Jonassen even eclipsed captain Lanning with her player-of-the-match, three-wicket performance while Annabel Sutherland took one of the best catches the WPL has witnessed as the table-topping Capitals overpowered Mumbai Indians by nine wickets in Bengaluru. Lanning, who'd just been overtaken by another Aussie great Ellyse Perry at the top of the WPL's all-time run-scoring charts, regained her position at the summit in supreme fashion on Friday, easing her way to an unbeaten 60 off 49 balls that ensured her side moved two points clear atop the table. A #TATAWPL Classic 🤩Annabel Sutherland plucks one out of thin air 😮Is this the best catch of the season yet? 🤔Updates ▶️ #TATAWPL | #DCvMI | @DelhiCapitals — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 28, 2025 Reaching her second half-century of the season off 40 deliveries, this was Lanning back at her flowing best after a few recent struggles, with the matchwinning knock taking her all-time run total to 845, 10 clear of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Perry. The 32-year-old's eighth half-century over the three editions of the competition is now also a record, and there should be plenty more fireworks when she does battle with her old international teammate Perry again in Saturday's Capitals-RCB clash in Bengaluru. Lanning's innings, aided by fellow opener Shafali Verma's bludgeoning 43 off 28, ensured Delhi raced to their modest target on 1-124 with 33 balls remaining, which will be a boon to their net run-rate. 🔙 to 🔙 For an excellent spell of 3/25, Jess Jonassen wins her second consecutive Player of the Match award 👏🙌Scorecard ▶️ | #DCvMI | @DelhiCapitals | @JJonassen21 — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 28, 2025 As she watched her skipper stroke nine boundaries, an admiring Jonassen admitted afterwards that she felt that she didn't really deserve the player of the match award and that it sould have gone to Lanning. But her 3-25, which featured the key dismissals of India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, trapped leg before for 24, and star England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, sharply caught and bowled for 18, was a real match turner, continuing the discarded Australian international's great form in India. It was the 32-year-old's second straight player-of-the-match accolade after her unbeaten 61 steered Delhi to victory over Gujarat on Tuesday. Sutherland, Australia's player of the moment, got in on the act too, sprinting hard for 30 metres from long on before hurling herself forward to take a stupendous catch to see the back of New Zealand ace Amelia Kerr for 17. "Just glad to hold on to it. Hopefully ticked off my high speed numbers there," said Sutherland, whose mum, in the crowd to watch her heroics, remained quite unemotional. "She's watched her fair share of cricket - it's good to have her here," Sutherland smiled. "That was an incredible catch - and crucial for us," said Lanning, who was thrilled the way young Indian spinner Minnu Mani's 3-17 also did much to keep Mumbai down to 9-123 after she had asked them to bat. Sutherland (1-21 off four) also took a key wicket of her own, getting the in-form opener Hayley Matthews to miscue one straight into the hands of Shafali after she'd moved ominously on to 22 off 25.

Jonasson shines as pinch-hitter in Delhi's WPL win
Jess Jonassen's international career may appear to be behind her but she has provided a reminder of her ability with a match-wining knock in the Women's Premier League. The Queenslander last wore the baggy green in 2023 and given Australia's strength in depth a recall at the age of 32 seems unlikely. She remains, however, a dangerous cricketer as was underlined as Delhi Capitals went to the top of the Women's Premier League table with a comfortable six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in Bengaluru. After Giants were restricted to 9-127 on a tricky pitch Jonassen came to the wicket in the unfamiliar role of pinch-hitter with Capitals 1-14 off 21 balls and Meg Lanning dismissed for a 13-ball three. Jonassen had scored one and five this season, batting at No.6, and Giants captain Ash Gardner admitted: "That was a bit of a shock to see Jonno come out - but she capitalised, she struck the ball really well." Wrapping up a table-topping win! 🔝😎#DC seal the chase in style and become the first team with 3️⃣ wins this season! 👌Scorecard ▶️ | #DCvGG | @DelhiCapitals — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 25, 2025 Indeed she did, smiting a 32-ball unbeaten 61, her first WPL half-century, with nine fours and two sixes, to take Delhi to victory with 29 balls to spare. "I loved it, bit surprised by the opportunity but I was happy to take it," said Jonassen. "I had a bit of luck early on but that is part of the T20 game. "My whole career I have judged myself on my bating and I was really pleased to have a captain (Lanning) and coach (Jonathan Batty) that really backed me." "It is nice when something comes off like that," said Lanning. "JJ has shown a few times she is very capable with the bat." Clinical with the bat 🤝 Effective with the ball Jess Jonassen is the Player of the Match for her superb all-round show! 🫡Scorecard ▶️ | #DCvGG | @DelhiCapitals | @JJonassen21 — Women's Premier League (WPL) (@wplt20) February 25, 2025 Bengaluru staged a nine-an-over run-fest on Monday, culminating in the WPL's first super over. On a new wicket, with a light smattering of grass, it soon became clear there would not be a repeat on Tuesday. Giants, playing their first match for a week, struggled from the start against Marizanne Kapp's movement. After reaching 0-16 off three overs they lost four wickets for four runs off the next ten balls. South African Kapp (2-17) began the slide, having Harleen Deol caught behind then Phoebe Litchfield, making her debut in this year's campaign, leg before for a three-ball duck. Having watched from the other end Beth Mooney cracked Shikha Pandey (2-18) through the covers for four, only to be well caught by Niki Prasad attempting a pull-sweep six. Mooney has now followed 56 in the first game with scores of 0, 1 and 10. Next ball Prasad caught a skier to send Kashvee Gautam back for a golden duck. "They have got four international quicks so it was always going to be challenging in the powerplay," said Gardner. "They bowled exceptionally well, and put us under pressure. We didn't do a lot right with the bat." Gardner, coming off two fifties in three innings, looked to rebuild, but was bowled by a superb off-cutter for three runs off nine balls. That left Giants 5-43 with only West Indies' Deandra Dottin (26) showing resistance before being dismissed by Annabel Sutherland (2-20) Late hitting from Bharti Fulmali (40 not out off 29) gave Giants a respectable total, but it was never likely to be sufficient. Once Jonassen found her range, mixing classy drives with agricultural heaves, it was soon chased down. Even a brilliant caught behind by Mooney, standing up, to dismiss Sutherland (1) could not delay the end.
