New York Giants' Jevon Holland dubbed bounce-back candidate for 2025

New York Giants' Jevon Holland dubbed bounce-back candidate for 2025 The New York Giants made a big splash this offseason to address the secondary, adding one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. With a clear need to upgrade the safety position, general manager Joe Schoen brought in former Miami Dolphins star Jevon Holland to East Rutherford on a three-year deal worth $45.3 million in hopes the former second-round pick could help establish a young foundation in Shane Bowen's defense. While the move as a whole was generally well-received, Holland was named the Giants' top bounce-back candidate for the 2025 campaign by Dalton Wasserman of Pro Football Focus. Miami let Holland walk in free agency after he posted a career-low 57.1 coverage grade in 2024. However, his 91.3 coverage grade since 2021 still ranks tied for fifth among qualified safeties, highlighting his overall consistency before last season. Holland thrives as a deep-roaming free safety in single-high coverages, a promising fit under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, whose defense ranked sixth in single-high usage during the 2024 regular season. Pairing Holland with another young safety in Tyler Nubin, who was New York's second-round pick in 2024, allows the Giants to build a stronger secondary entering the second season under Bowen as the defensive coordinator. Both Holland and Nubin have experience playing various roles within the secondary, but the former thrives in pass coverage. Though PFF gave Holland a career-low coverage grade, the Oregon product posted career-best marks in passer rating allowed (89.0) and completion percentage allowed (54.2%) in coverage during the 2024 season, according to Pro Football Reference's advanced metrics. The Giants' defense will be defined by what they get from the improved pass rush, but it's encouraging that the unit was able to upgrade the secondary with a marquee player still entering his prime.

NFL analyst: New York Giants' secondary among NFL's most improved units

NFL analyst: New York Giants' secondary among NFL's most improved units The New York Giants' secondary has undergone a full makeover over the past few seasons. In 2023, they selected Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks in the first round of the draft and followed that up last year by taking safety Tyler Nubin and slot corner Dru Phillips on Day 2 of the draft. This offseason, they fortified the group with the free agency signings of cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland. Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus lists the Giants' secondary as one of the five most improved units so far after the first several waves of free agency. The Giants had the sixth-worst coverage grade in the NFL last year and emphasized fixing that through free agency, signing safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo to deals totaling nearly $100 million. Holland is the perfect replacement for Xavier McKinney, who departed last year for the Green Bay Packers. Since entering the NFL in 2021, Holland's 91.3 coverage grade ranks tied for fifth among all safeties. Adebo is coming off a bit of a down season but in 2023, he was one of the 15 highest-graded and most valuable cornerbacks according to PFF's wins-above-replacement metric. The Giants now have one of the best young secondaries in the NFL and will be guided by a pair of new position coaches in Marquand Manuel (pass game coordinator) and Jeff Burris (cornerbacks). The team hopes the new faces can gel quickly and become a factor in the NFC East, where they will be tasked with some of the league's most explosive passing games in Dallas, Philadelphia, and Washington.

Jevon Holland gives rave reviews to safeties set to replace him with Dolphins

Jevon Holland gives rave reviews to safeties set to replace him with Dolphins Jevón Holland's time with the Miami Dolphins officially came to an end this week when he became a free agent and agreed to terms on a three-year, $45.3 million deal with the New York Giants. But the safety hasn't had anything negative to say about the team that picked him in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. In a podcast with NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe, Holland even had glowing praise for the pair of safeties brought in to replace him in Miami. "I will say Ashtyn [Davis], he's been with the with the Jets for the last five years, I think he's like kind of a jack of all trades, very fast, very athletic," Holland said on the latest episode of Breakin' House Rules. "He does a lot for the Jets, core [special] teamer as well. And I think that he's going to have some success in Miami. "I think [Ifeatu Melifonwu], the same thing. He's kind of been behind Brian Branch and Kerby [Joseph] on the Lions. But he's the same way, like, he's really athletic, really talented, tall, lanky, has range. He's gonna have success, as well as Patrick McMorris and Elijah Campbell, like they both are still really good players." The Dolphins reportedly entertained the idea of bringing back Holland, but couldn't stomach his more than $15 million per year price tag. The 25-year-old safety has a theory about why Miami might not prioritize the tail-end of the secondary enough to dish out that much. "The scheme for the safeties is more so, like, umbrella thought process," Holland said. "Keep everything in front of you. When you look at the Ravens and how they were built — because it's kind of like a Ravens scheme — the way that the Ravens are built, their front is where they make the bread. The front and the front seven. Like, if their safety or the corner is good, then their defense is even better. So I feel like the thought process is to build from the bottom up. So the [defensive] line, the linebackers, and then the safeties." The pair of new safeties set to be added to the Miami secondary came at a much lower price. Melifonwu and Davis reportedly agreed to one-year deals worth $4 million and $2.5 million, respectively.
