Saif Ali Khan talks about competition from within the film industry: 'You're just happy the other person's there...'

Saif Ali Khan shared that the concept of a 'hero' has evolved to include flawed, relatable characters, enhancing storytelling. He emphasized healthy competition on set, focusing on the film's success rather than rivalry. Saif also acknowledged natural insecurities and praised his 'Jewel Thief' co-star, Jaideep Ahlawat. Saif Ali Khan , who recently starred in Jewel Thief : The Heist Begins, talked about how the portrayal of a 'hero' has changed over the years, highlighting the shift in what viewers expect and how film narratives have evolved. Evolution of the 'Hero' in Cinema As reported in Bollywood Bubbles, Saif discussed the evolution of the concept of a 'hero.' He explained that while the idea of heroism hasn't completely changed, it has expanded to recognize heroic qualities even in flawed characters, which makes storytelling more interesting. Saif expressed his happiness about this shift, viewing it as a positive sign of growth in both character development and audience perception. The Power of Layered Characters The actor also highlighted that characters with multiple layers have a stronger ability to connect emotionally with the audience. He explained that since no one is perfect and everyone experiences both good and bad moments, capturing these complexities makes a character far more powerful and relatable. These kinds of realistic portrayals are rare on screen, which makes them resonate on a deeper level. He expressed his appreciation for this positive change in storytelling. Saif on Competition in the Film Industry Saif shared his thoughts on competition within the film industry. He believes that the primary focus should always be the success of the film, and in that sense, there is no rivalry on set because everyone is committed to contributing their best. At the same time, he recognizes that acting is naturally competitive, with characters often vying for prominence in the story. However, Saif emphasized that this competition is healthy and constructive, rather than harmful or driven by insecurity. Praising Co-Stars He acknowledged that there have been times when he felt competitive or insecure, emphasizing that such emotions are natural since everyone is human and the profession can be challenging. However, he pointed out that, in most situations, the primary focus remains on the film itself, with competition centered around the importance of one's character. Netflix's 'Jewel Thief' actor Saif Ali Khan on competition from other stars: 'It hits you so much harder when...'

Saif Ali Khan, who was recently seen in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, shared his views on the evolution of a 'hero', and pointed out the radical shift in audience expectations and the overall narrative. Speaking about the evolution of 'hero', Saif stated, 'While it (the idea of heroism) may not have changed completely, it has certainly broadened in the way that you find heroic things in even things that flawed people do and that's more interesting.' He adds, 'I'm happy it's happening because it's a sign of evolution of character and audience.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Jewel Thief actor adds further that layered characters carry a much deeper capability to connect with the audience. 'None of us are perfect in our lives, we all have good moments and bad moments, and if you can capture those things, it makes it so much more powerful than having a one-note kind of character who's like this godlike angel who never does anything wrong, which is how it's been in the West and with us, but now it's changing.' 'It hits you so much harder if a hero does something that is not his finest moment like if snaps at his son, or does something which is 'so human', you don't get to see it so often (on screen). It kind of moves us on a different level. And, it's great that it's happening,' he adds. Considering that Saif has shared the screen space with renowned and established actors, he opined about facing competition on the set. 'The most important thing is the film. So on that level there's no competition because you're just happy the other person's there and everyone's contributing beautifully to the film,' he shared, and also acknowledged that acting is an inherently competitive space where characters compete for importance. While explaining the competitive spirit, Saif considered that the spirit is not destructive, undermining or insecure, or dangerous. 'There might have been times where I've felt (competitive), insecure…we're all humans, and the profession is like that as well, but in this case particularly and in most cases it's the film first and like I said competing for your character's importance,' he concluded and also appreciated his Jewel Thief co-star Jaideep Ahlawat. Saif says ‘the idea of heroism has broadened'; talks about working with Jaideep Ahlawat in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins

Actor Saif Ali Khan, whose latest outing Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins recently dropped on OTT, says the idea of heroism in cinema is evolving. Discussing how the portrayal of heroes has evolved over time, Saif agrees there's a shift in the narrative and audience expectations. 'While it (the idea of heroism) may not have changed completely, it has certainly broadened in the way that you find heroic things in even things that flawed people do and that's more interesting,' the 54-year-old says, adding, 'I'm happy it's happening because it's a sign of evolution of character and audience.' The actor explains that layered characters resonate more deeply with the audiences: 'None of us are perfect in our lives, we all have good moments and bad moments, and if you can capture those things, it makes it so much more powerful than having a one-note kind of character who's like this godlike angel who never does anything wrong, which is how it's been in the West and with us, but now it's changing.' He adds, 'It hits you so much harder if a hero does something that is not his finest moment like if snaps at his son, or does something which is 'so human', you don't get to see it so often (on screen). It kind of moves us on a different level. And, it's great that it's happening.' On sharing screen space with actor Jaideep Ahlawat, who played art collector Rajan Aulakh in the film, Saif says, 'It was lovely. He's really taken the film to a different level. When you read his part on paper, it's very strong and interesting. But the colours he's given it are beyond what I would have imagined.' Ask him if there was any competition on set, and Saif, who has worked on several two-hero films including Vikram Vedha (2022), Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021), answers, 'The most important thing is the film. So on that level there's no competition because you're just happy the other person's there and everyone's contributing beautifully to the film.' However, he also acknowledges the inherent competitive spirit that comes with acting: 'But on another level, while as an actor I'm not competing with Jaideep, acting is a competitive business. It should be because your character is competing for importance.' 'When you're doing a scene and you're speaking with all the passion, you want to be the most important voice. So in that sense, you're competing with everybody and that's how it should be,' Saif explains, adding, 'There's that, but it's not a destructive, undermining or insecure or dangerous kind of thing. When Jaideep does nails a shot, I'm very happy for the movie and for myself because I'm going to benefit from that and then I'm like 'Okay, I better get my act together and be good'.' Reflecting on the occasional insecurity that comes with the profession, Saif points out that in Jewel Thief, such feelings were minimal. 'There might have been times where I've felt (competitive), insecure…we're all humans, and the profession is like that as well, but in this case particularly and in most cases it's the film first and like I said competing for your character's importance. Also, Jaideep is too good to compete. He's among the best actors around today,' Saif ends.

Kunal Kapoor: Man of many parts

(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated May 19, 2025)Q. Your recent project, Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, marks your return to films after a four-year wasn't deliberate; it's just that I wasn't getting the kind of roles I wanted to do. During this time, I attended workshops to learn new skills like clowning and pursued my passion for writing. In the past few years, I have put together a writer's room to create the content I am passionate about. The plan is to act in some and produce How was it being a part of an ensemble project that stars the likes of Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat? Jewel Thief is a rollercoaster ride, with one twist after another. It's great popcorn entertainment. People believe such films are easier to make vis--vis serious projects, but they require a great amount of craft too. I played the role of a tough cop, a welcome departure from the peacemaker, philosopher or poet I usually am on screen. I didn't share much screen space with Jaideep, but it was great spending time with Saif.Q. You are also an entrepreneur. What led you to establish a crowdfunding platform over a decade ago?I have always been a nerd with a keen interest in technology. And then there's the part of me that wanted to help people. The idea was to leverage technology and create a transparent platform where those who sought help could reach out to individuals capable of providing financial assistance. That's how Ketto came to What's next on the cards?I am co-producing a dramedy, which should hopefully go on the floors this year. It's too early to speak about it. I have also just finished a Telugu film, Vishwambhara, starring Chiranjeevi. I play the role of the antagonist, something I have never done to India Today MagazineMust Watch
