Greta Thunberg's Gaza trip sums up the dangerous narcissism of our woke elite

Bored with saving the planet, Greta Thunberg now wants to save Gaza. Yes, Sweden's prophetess of doom has a new moral crusade. It's no longer the coming heat death of the Earth that keeps her up at night – it's Israel's 'live-streamed genocide' in Gaza, as she calls it. She and a gaggle of self-righteous pals have set sail for that benighted strip of land. They departed Sicily yesterday, their boat a riot of keffiyehs and Palestine flags. They hope to dock in Gaza in a week's time. Their aim is nothing less than to 'break the Israeli blockade' of Gaza. 'We are seeing a systematic starvation of two million people. Every single one of us has a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight for a free Palestine', said Ms Thunberg. Of all the smug stunts of the faux-virtuous activist class, this is surely the most preposterous. The idea that 12 woke fainthearts from Europe might 'liberate' Gaza would be funny if it were not so dangerous. What does Ms Thunberg plan to do when she gets there? Bellow: 'HOW DARE YOU' at a column of IDF soldiers? Such daft antics might work on the self-hating political elites of the West who love nothing more than being told off by eco-pompous children. But it won't wash with the army of the Jewish State that is in hot pursuit of the anti-Semitic terrorists that butchered more than a thousand Israelis on October 7 2023. Game of Thrones star, Liam Cunningham, is on the boat too. So he's gone from doing fantasy drama to doing fantasy politics. He cosplayed as the 'onion knight' in that TV show – now he's cosplaying as a white knight who might rescue the wretched of Gaza from Israel's cruel grip. This is sanctimony on the high seas. It is oceangoing virtue-signalling. It's a self-serving stunt masquerading as a daring act of charity. It will achieve precisely nothing for people in Gaza. If Gaza's two million inhabitants really are being 'systematically starved' – they aren't – then how on earth will a small boat carrying little more than boxes of spare keffiyehs and turbo-smug activists help them? The aim of these seafaring missionaries is less to draw attention to the undoubted suffering of people in Gaza than to advertise their own puffed-up moral rectitude. The boat Greta and chums originally intended to sail on – before it was allegedly damaged in a drone strike near Malta – was called 'Conscience'. That sums up the colossal immodesty and self-regard of the Gaza saviours. These unmerry few fancy themselves as the 'conscience' of humanity. I reckon that boat was called 'Conscience' because 'Look How Wonderful and Caring We Are!' wouldn't fit on the hull. The most hilarious part of this watery clown show is that as these narcissists cross the Mediterranean wailing 'Feed Gaza!', that's exactly what Israel is doing. Israel has handed out millions of meals over the past week through its Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). In the first four days, the GHF gave an astonishing 2,170,822 meals to Gaza's needy. If these numbers stay consistent, then in the seven days Greta and her apostles are on their stupid boat, Israel will give Gazans close to four million meals. What a perfect illustration of the hollow virtue of 21st-century activism: as the Israel-haters bloviate on their boat to any media channel that will listen, Israel does the hard graft of feeding Gaza. As they take selfies of themselves sobbing into their keffiyehs over what a uniquely barbarous nation Israel is, Israel is literally saving Palestinian lives. They do moral pantomime, for likes and clicks – Israel does actual aid, with very little thanks. Rarely has the pointless and performative nature of modern Left activism been so gloriously exposed. All that these boat people have to offer to Gaza is cheap slogans and lame platitudes. They can't eat those, Greta. It's clear now that the old omnicause of 'the climate' has been replaced by the new omnicause of hating Israel. It's out with the hemp sweaters, in with the keffiyeh. Out with the hysterics about billions dying at the altar of modernity, in with the equally shrill claim that millions of Palestinians will perish as a result of Israeli wickedness. I can't be the only person who finds it chilling that the world's only Jewish nation has become the target of rich, bored Westerners' fashionable rage. This activism isn't just risible – it's dangerous. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Israel Alarmed by Trump's Arms Sales and Deals With Gulf States

President Donald Trump's Middle East tour has left Israel apprehensive about a shift in US foreign policy from one rooted in security to a focus on commerce, especially massive arms sales to neighbors that don't recognize the Jewish state. The deals themselves appear to be so large — $142 billion in arms to Saudi Arabia and $243 billion to Qatar, with a focus on defense — that some in Israel fear they could reduce the longstanding US guarantee of its regional military superiority, the so-called Qualitative Military Edge.

Israel strikes Syrian extremists in warning to new regime

Israel carried out air strikes on an 'extremist group' in Syria that was preparing to attack a Druze community on the outskirts of Damascus, Benjamin Netanyahu said. The Israeli prime minister said Wednesday's 'warning operation' was meant to send a 'serious message' to Syria's new leadership that Israel, which has a sizeable Druze population, would not allow the minority to be targeted. 'The IDF [Israel Defence Force] has carried out a warning operation and struck elements of an extremist group that was preparing to continue attacks on the Druze population in the town of Sahnaya, in the Damascus district in Syria,' Mr Netanyahu said in a joint statement with Israel Katz, the defence minister. Israel 'will not allow harm to the Druze community in Syria, out of a deep commitment to our Druze brothers in Israel, who are connected by family and historical ties to their Druze brothers in Syria', the statement read. In recent days, 13 people are reported to have died in clashes between the Druze community and militias loyal to Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian president also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani. Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the Druze spiritual leader in Israel, called earlier for 'Jews around the world and the international community to act now, immediately, to prevent a massacre'. 'Israel must not stand by in the face of events unfolding as we speak. Israeli leaders, you must take on the burden of proof and action,' he added. Eyal Zamir, chief of the IDF, instructed his forces to prepare to strike targets belonging to the Syrian regime 'should the violence against Druze communities continue'. He said: 'The IDF is monitoring developments in the region, and IDF troops are deployed and prepared for defence and developments in the area of Syria.' The IDF also said that three injured Syrian Druze were evacuated from Syria and taken to a hospital in Safed, Israel for treatment. Israel's Druze minority are mostly located in the Galilee and the Golan Heights, which the Jewish State captured from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981. Many Druze have since become Israeli citizens, but some still identify as Syrian. The community numbers around 150,000 people in total. They are an Arab religious group but do not identify as Muslims. In a statement, the Syrian government said it 'affirms its unwavering commitment to protect all components of the Syrian people... including the children of the honourable Druze community', also expressing its rejection of 'foreign interference'. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel has launched hundreds of strikes on Syria aimed at destroying the Assad regime's stockpile of military hardware and chemical weapons, to prevent them falling into the hands of the country's new leadership. The Israeli military has also taken control of Syria's Mount Meron, and sent troops to occupy a buffer zone established in 1974 separating the two countries. Israel said the seizure of Syrian territory was done to prevent jihadists from establishing themselves on the border. On Monday, the Israeli prime minister claimed to have stopped an Iranian operation in December aimed at rescuing Assad when his country was falling to a rapid rebel attack. Iran wanted to send 'one or two airborne divisions' to help 'rescue Assad', Mr Netanyahu said. 'We stopped that. We sent some F-16s to some Iranian planes that were making some routes to Damascus. They turned back.' Syria's new president has demanded that Israel stop its attacks inside his country. 'I mean, a delusional person can say whatever they want. Every person can imagine that he is suffering from some danger and carry out a pre-emptive strike and kill. But that is not justifiable,' Mr Al-Sharaa said. Attacks on Assad loyalists The clashes between local militias and Druze communities is the latest in a string of sectarian attacks since the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham group (HTS) seized power from Assad in December last year. In early March, Alawite fighters who support Assad launched attacks against HTS forces in Syria's coastal region, killing hundreds of security forces and civilians. In return, government forces stormed into Alawite towns and cities, massacring hundreds of civilians and fighters. More than 1,000 people were killed in four days of sectarian clashes.

Israel continues to strike Gaza, killing dozens of Palestinians days after ceasefire ends

Strikes launched by Israel killed at least 58 Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip overnight and into Thursday, according to hospitals via The Associated Press. The Jewish State resumed attacks across Gaza earlier this week, breaking a ceasefire, which reportedly killed over 400 Palestinians – mostly women and children – on Tuesday, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry. Israel's military indicated that it intercepted a missile fired by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels early Thursday before it entered Israel's airspace, The AP reported. "Israel does not target Palestinian civilians. We target Hamas terrorists," Netanyahu said in a video shared to X on Tuesday. "And when these terrorists embed themselves in civilian areas, when they use civilians as human shields, they're the ones who are responsible for all unintended casualties." Israel launched its war on Hamas in response to the terrorist group's heinous attack on Oct. 7, 2023. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., a staunch supporter of Israel, continued to express his support while visiting the foreign nation this week. "Hamas does not want peace. I unapologetically, 100% stand with Israel, and demand the release of all remaining hostages. Sending this from Israel," Fetterman said on X on Tuesday. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., said on X on Wednesday, "Hamas could end this war right now if it released the hostages held in Gaza. It could've done so months ago, but instead it's brought devastation by prolonging this conflict. America must lead the world in pressuring Hamas to end this war and bring the hostages home."
