Lorde Celebrates ‘Man of the Year' in New Video

Lorde continues teasing her fourth album, Virgin, with second single 'Man of the Year.' The track follows her April release 'What Was That.' Like the entirety of Virgin, Lorde worked on the song with producer Jim-E Stack. The track also features Dev Hynes on cello. On the mid-tempo single, Lorde reflects on her 'recent ego-death,' singing about how we're meeting her at a very strange time in her life. The accompanying music video features the singer-songwriter alone in a room in a white tee and jeans. As the song progresses, she peels off her shirt and duct-tapes her breasts before she sings, 'Now I'm broken open/Let's hear it for the man of the year.' More from Rolling Stone Everything We Know About Lorde's Upcoming Album 'Virgin' Benson Boone Delivers a Tender Tribute With 'Momma Song' The Everyday Items That Inspired Lorde's New Album, From 5 Gum to Apple Headphones In her Rolling Stone cover story, Lorde revealed that the song was an integral part of her understanding the fluidity of her own gender identity. She recalled sitting on the floor of her apartment, trying to visualize a version of herself 'that was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment.' She landed on an image of herself wearing men's jeans, duct tape on her chest, and a gold chain. 'I went to the cupboard, and I got the tape out, and I did it to myself,' she said. 'I have this picture staring at myself. I was blond [at the time]. It scared me what I saw. I didn't understand it. But I felt something bursting out of me. It was crazy. It was something jagged. There was this violence to it.' The song was also written shortly after Lorde chose to stop taking birth control for the first time since she was a teenager. It led to her ovulating for the first time in years, an experience she likened to the 'best drug' she's ever done. 'I felt like stopping taking my birth control, I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity,' she said. 'It sounds crazy, but I felt that all of a sudden, I was off the map of femininity. And I totally believed that that allowed things to open up.' Lorde described herself as 'in the middle gender-wise.' She still uses she/her pronouns and identifies as a cis woman. Virgin is set to release on June 27, four years after her last album, Solar Power. Lorde Finally Announces New Album ‘Virgin': Here's When It Arrives

Lorde has released three albums, but it's been so long since she dropped one that her fourth full-length effort, Virgin — which the star announced at long last Wednesday (April 30) — might just make you feel like she's doing it for the very first time. The New Zealand native shared the news via a posting on her website, revealing the LP's blue-toned cover art and sharing that it will arrive June 27. '100% WRITTEN IN BLOOD,' she wrote, revealing that the project's collaborators include Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro and Dev Hynes of Blood Orange. Instead, the photo shows what appears to be an X-ray of a crotch area with a zipper showing up on the scan in the front; between the bones that make up the pelvis, an IUD is visible. In a release, Lorde further teased the direction of the record. 'THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR,' she wrote in an all-caps statement. 'LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL. THE SOUNDS ARE THE SAME WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC.' 'I'M PROUD AND SCARED OF THIS ALBUM,' she added. 'THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE. I BELIEVE THAT PUTTING THE DEEPEST PARTS OF OURSELVES TO MUSIC IS WHAT SETS US FREE.' The announcement comes just more than a week after Lorde dropped Virgin's lead single, 'What Was That,' on April 24. The track arrived with an accompanying music video filmed in New York City, featuring footage of the singer meeting up with fans in Washington Square Park. Lorde hasn't released an album since 2021's Solar Power, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200. See Lorde's announcement below. Lorde announces US, Europe tour

Kiwi singer Lorde has announced an upcoming tour with dates in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. The international tour, titled Ultrasound, will follow the release of her new album Virgin on June 27. The tour is scheduled to begin in Austin, Texas on September 17 and wrap up in Stockholm, Sweden on December 9. New Zealand does not feature. Support acts include Blood Orange, the Japanese House, Nilüfer Yana, Chanel Beads, Empress Of, Jim-E Stack and Oklou. The singer described the tour as a collaboration between herself and her fanbase in an email this morning. "Every show I play is a collaboration between you and me. We meet in a room and we make music together, our bodies and the machines in search of something bigger together. 12 years of meeting up and making sound that's just for us. "Since last time I've been stripping away unnecessary layers, finding us more room to move. I think that Ultrasound could be our masterpiece. Very proud and excited to be bringing my most talented friends in support." Lorde released the album's lead single What Was That on April 24. She debuted the single at a pop-up event in the Big Apple which was initially shut down by police due to the influx of fans. However, the pop-up event ended up going ahead after all, with fans who stayed getting their first full airing of Lorde's new single. Earlier this week she attended the Met Gala in New York. Tickets go on pre-sale on May 14 and general sale on May 16.
