Tony Khan Reacts To WWE Frequently Counterprogramming AEW Events

Tony Khan assesses the competition. Last weekend, AEW and WWE went head-to-head, with Double or Nothing and NXT Battleground both airing on Sunday evening in the United States. This wasn't the first time the two companies have gone directly against each other, as AEW Collision has occasionally competed against WWE premium live events, and AEW Dynamite famously battled NXT in the Wednesday Night Wars. Advertisement At the Double or Nothing post-show media scrum, AEW CEO Tony Khan addressed this trend, likening it to another popular wrestling franchise. 'It's pretty consistent. I'd say it's the most consistent event head-to-head scheduling since Jim Crockett Promotions,' Khan said. 'Saw a lot of scheduling that went that way, and I can tell you that this will go a lot differently than that did.' Before its sale to the Turner Broadcasting System in 1988, Jim Crockett Promotions stood as a popular wrestling organization, with successful pay-per-view events. Under the Vince McMahon Jr. regime, however, JCP saw their shows frequently countered by WWE, with a notable example being the annual WWE Survivor Series event, which directly opposed Starrcade in 1987. Given Khan's statement, it seems AEW is confident that they will not suffer the same fate as JCP. In the main event of AEW Double or Nothing, 'Hangman' Adam Page defeated Will Ospreay in the finals of the Men's Owen Hart Foundation Tournament. Meanwhile, on NXT Battleground, Trick Williams dethroned TNA World Champion Joe Hendry in the main event. Tony Khan Encourages Fans To Stop Gatekeeping And Welcome Everyone To AEW

Tony Khan encouraged AEW fans to be open and welcoming toward WWE fans who are showing interest in the company. Recently, a fan on Twitter/X pointed out that more WWE fans have begun asking about AEW and considering watching it. He questioned whether AEW fans should keep the promotion exclusive or allow new viewers in. Advertisement The fan wrote, 'Lately fed fans are asking questions about AEW and wanting to watch it. Should we gatekeep this promotion or letting them in?' In response, AEW President Tony Khan urged fans to welcome new viewers with open arms and to stop gatekeeping. He replied, 'Please gatekeep nothing, sir. Please welcome these people to AEW with arms wide open.' Ever since AEW's debut in 2019, fan wars between the two companies' supporters have continued, with many fans choosing sides early on and keeping the rivalry alive. However, it seems Tony Khan doesn't want this fan rivalry to push WWE fans away from his company. Instead, he's ready to welcome them in. Tony Khan responds to WWE's counterprogramming strategy At the AEW Double or Nothing post-show media scrum, Tony Khan addressed WWE's ongoing trend of counter-programming. AEW President Tony Khan fires back at WWE's counter-programming: 'This won't end like JCP'

Tony Khan didn't hold back after AEW Double or Nothing 2025. The AEW boss made it clear that WWE's counter-programming isn't going unnoticed. Speaking to the media, Khan said this is the most consistent head-to-head scheduling he's seen since WWE went after Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1980s. 'It's pretty consistent,' Khan said. 'I'd say it's the most consistent event head-to-head scheduling since Jim Crockett Promotions. And I can tell you this will go a lot differently than that did.' AEW is not backing down from the fight In the past, Vince McMahon went after JCP by running Survivor Series at the same time as Starrcade in 1987. Then came Royal Rumble on the same day as Bunkhouse Stampede. JCP couldn't handle the pressure and had to sell the company to Turner Broadcasting in 1988. Khan knows the story but believes AEW will not meet the same fate. Tony Khan is growing up. He's become a lot more confident in his product and he seems comfortable in his own skin. This weekend, WWE ran NXT Battleground opposite AEW's Double or Nothing. In July, AEW's All In Texas will go up against an NXT premium live event and Saturday Night's Main Event. AEW had announced their show almost a year earlier. WWE also has a European tour lined up during AEW's Forbidden Door in London this August. Khan didn't reveal AEW's next steps but made it clear they are ready. He also spoke about Scorpio Sky, saying he still has plans for him but the timing wasn't right yet. The message from Khan was clear. He sees what WWE is doing, but AEW won't back down. This rivalry might remind fans of the old days, but Khan believes the outcome will be very different.
