North Carolina basketball has tripled roster spending for 2025-26 season A report states that UNC basketball is spending triple for the roster.
The 2025-26 season is a very important one for the North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program. After a season in which they barely made the NCAA Tournament and then had a first-round exit, it's on Hubert Davis and the staff to get things in order.
And they are getting the resources to do just that.
The Tar Heels will have a whole new roster next season, with five new starters and the return of Seth Trimble who was a key piece a year ago. They re-tooled the roster, landing an impressive transfer class as well as bringing in a top 10 recruiting class. With the addition of Jim Tanner at General Manager, key moves were made and the money was spent.
In fact, a lot of money was spent.
Per Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes, the Tar Heels' have surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster. Here is what Barnes wrote in Monday's report:
Multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14 million mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster, approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago. Men's basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner's $850,000 salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university's support of its prized program.
It will take time to see if this roster is constructed correctly, but going out and spending money is a good first step for the program.
The struggles of last season forced North Carolina to do this and rightfully so. Davis can't afford another year of being on the bubble, despite making the tournament in two of those three seasons on the bubble. There needs to bean improvement made to make the program feel confident about the future.
And in this new NIL era, North Carolina is hopefully finally catching up.
