Former Packers star recalls being ‘pretty miserable' during Raiders stint

Davante Adams left the Green Bay Packers to join the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. However, the move to the Silver and Black didn't go as planned, and the wide receiver would depart last year. Moreover, Adams has recently stated that maybe leaving Green Bay for Las Vegas wasn't the ideal decision. The veteran receiver posted back-to-back seasons with at least 100 catches, more than 1,000 yards, and eight or more touchdowns. However, in his third and final season with the Raiders, the situation went downhill, leading to a trade to the New York Jets to reunite with former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Still, that move wouldn't work out for Adams, who signed with the Los Angeles Rams this past offseason. On Tuesday, while speaking on ESPN Los Angeles, Adams might have hinted at some regret leaving the Packers for the Raiders, as he was brutally honest about his time in Las Vegas when asked about reuniting with Jimmy Garoppolo on the Rams. MORE:Packers' $1 million team-first player predicted to carve out spot on 53-man roster "It's amazing," Adams said. "I love Jimmy, and it was never a personal thing. I'm surprised this is the first time it's been brought up, but it's been amazing. We got to, you know, catch up and get on the right page. "And obviously, that was just a dark moment in all of our lives. I think all of us were pretty miserable over there, and we kind of caught up and laughed about it. And we've been making plays since we've been out here, so it's been fun." While Adams has experienced personal success since leaving Green Bay, that hasn't translated over to team success. The 32-year-old didn't make the playoffs with the Raiders or Jets and will look to end that trend with a fresh start with Los Angeles as he attempts to become a go-to target for Matthew Stafford this season.

Davante Adams on his relationship with Jimmy Garoppolo: 'It was never a personal thing'

Much has been said and written about the viral clip of Davante Adams' frustrations during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders — specifically when Jimmy Garoppolo was throwing him the football in 2023. Adams' expletive-laden rant during an episode of Netflix's show Receiver included comments about how he needed to leave the Raiders because of how many times passes left him getting hit by defenders. All of which happened while Garoppolo was under center. Then, in a weird twist of fate, both are together again — this time with the Los Angeles Rams. They are even completing passes together in practice while starting quarterback Matthew Stafford is out with a back injury. There isn't any animosity between the two, though. Adams told ESPN's Scott Kaplan & Beto Duran this week that while their time together in Las Vegas was "a dark moment in all of our lives," his comments toward Garoppolo in the video were "never a personal thing." "I love Jimmy. It was never a personal thing," Adams said. "... We got to catch up and get on the right page. Obviously, that was just a dark moment in all of our lives — I think all of us were pretty miserable there. We laugh about it now." It's good to see Adams and Garoppolo work things out after a tumultuous-looking relationship with the Raiders. It also likely helps that they're now both playing in a very successful offense under Sean McVay. Hopefully, the two won't need to play together during the regular season. The Rams are hopeful Stafford will be healthy for Week 1, but getting early reps with Garoppolo isn't a bad thing, either, in the event Stafford misses time during the year. Concerning update on Matthew Stafford after Rams QB missed the start of camp with recurring issue

Matthew Stafford is not reporting to Los Angeles Rams training camp when originally thought, as the team's head coach, Sean McVay, provided a further update on his star signal caller. Stafford was believed to be reporting to training camp this week with a recurring neck issue finally being solved. Yet, the timeline to see the 37-year-old in action has been moved back, while McVay says there has not been a decline in Stafford's status. 'The ultimate goal is Houston [for the season opener], and being mindful of that, so we'll take it a week at a time with him,' McVay said over the weekend. Based on sitting down with [the team's sports medicine and performance senior vice president] Reggie [Scott] and with Matthew and talking with Dr. [Robert] Watkins, we feel like that's the smart thing to do. A week at a time with him.' 'But I don't have any more concerns. The goal in mind is Houston, and I do think this is the best plan for him.' Backup Jimmy Garoppolo will run the Rams' offense in the early practices, while the Rams also added quarterback Dresser Winn to the roster. Stafford is playing this season with a substantial $44m raise after a second straight offseason of financial discontent. This dispute was resolved more quickly than last year's standoff, and Stafford participated in the Rams' offseason workout programs to begin forming a bond with new receiver Davante Adams. Stafford will eventually line up for his 17th straight season as a starting quarterback in the NFL, one of the longest streaks in the league. The Rams star is only behind Aaron Rodgers as a guaranteed QB1 in 2025, with Kirk Cousins and Joe Flacco also looming as possibilities. 'It does not worry me,' McVay continued. 'What I probably should have done is say we're taking it a week at a time, but I don't have any reason to be concerned based on the information that's been given. With that being said, I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew' 'I think it's best for him and best for our football team. That's kind of the plan we'll have moving forward. I know that will surprise people, but I did want to at least let you guys know as we're begin fluid with this. But we don't have any reason for concern, but I do think it's the smart thing just based on [getting him ready for the season opener] Sept. 7... with that being the main goal in mind.'

Matthew Stafford to miss second week of Rams practice with back soreness, Sean McVay says no setback has occurred

Matthew Stafford will rest his back for another week of training camp, according to Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, who initially anticipated his Super Bowl-winning quarterback being sidelined for only the first four practices of camp. 'I probably spoke a little bit too soon,' McVay said Saturday after the Rams' fourth practice of camp, per the Associated Press. 'But the ultimate goal is [being ready for Week 1 of the regular season against] Houston and being mindful of that, so we'll take it a week at a time with him." McVay clarified that Stafford, 37, hasn't experienced a setback in recovering from the back soreness that McVay previously said "kind of crept up" on his two-time Pro Bowl quarterback this offseason. "I don't think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew," McVay said Saturday, as reported by ESPN, "and I think it's best for him, best for our football team, and that's kind of the plan that we'll have moving forward." McVay told NFL Network that the Rams are going to be "week-to-week" with Stafford, who is entering his 17th NFL season, including his fifth in Los Angeles. Although Stafford watched part of Saturday's practice from the field, he's spent most of the first week of camp working with Rams athletic trainers. In Stafford's absence, Jimmy Garoppolo has taken the lead with the first-team offense. But third-string quarterback Stetson Bennett is expected to get plenty of run during the preseason. Despite a head-turning comeback in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs last season, Los Angeles fell short of an upset win on the road against the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. In February, Stafford agreed to come back and play for the Rams on a restructured contract that's valued at $84 million over the next two seasons.
