Fox Sports replacing Jimmy Johnson with 4-time Super Bowl champ
The 'NFL on Fox' pregame show will look a little different this season after a mainstay retired during the offseason, paving the way for a familiar face to replace him. Fox Sports announced Friday that Rob Gronkowski would take over for Jimmy Johnson as a full-time analyst. Gronkowski, a four-time Super Bowl champion who played 11 seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnson, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020 joined Fox Sports as an analyst in 1994 after leaving the Dallas Cowboys. After spending two seasons as an analyst, he returned to coaching, leading the Miami Dolphins as their head coach for four seasons. Johnson retired from coaching and decided to return to Fox. In a March interview with Colin Cowherd, Johnson said that working at Fox was some of the most fun he had, including his Super Bowl wins and national championships at the University of Miami, but it was time to step aside. 'I had been thinking about it for the last four or five years, but I made the difficult decision to retire from Fox,' Johnson told Cowherd. 'I'm going to miss it and I'm going to miss all of the guys. I'll see them occasionally, but it had been a great run starting back 31 years ago.' The rest of the panel that includes Curt Menefee, Jay Glazer and Pro Football Hall of Famers Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Michael Strahan will return for the show's 32nd season. NFL Fans Aren't Happy With FOX's Replacement For Jimmy Johnson
NFL Fans Aren't Happy With FOX's Replacement For Jimmy Johnson originally appeared on The Spun. After decades as one of the hosts of the FOX NFL Sunday pregame show, Hall of Fame head coach Jimmy Johnson announced his departure from the network at the end of last season. His replacement has already been announced, but people are not thrilled. Ahead of the 2025 season, FOX Sports announced that four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski will be filling Johnson's seat. He has already worked with the network on many NFL media projects before, so it's not a surprise that they're giving him the job. Gronkowski is arguably the most well-known tight end in the entire world. He's been featured in just about every form of media ranging from commercials to television shows to professional wrestling. That said, Gronkowski isn't exactly Greg Olsen when it comes to the X's and O's. He knows his football, of course, but has a pretty sizable portion of fans who are just plain tired of him. Reaction News of Gronkowski being added to the FOX NFL Sunday desk has led to a ton of negative reactions on social media. Whether it's fatigue from the network continuously adding members of the New England Patriots dynasty to their ranks (like Tom Brady and Julian Edelman) or just fatigue over seeing Gronk himself, people are making their voices heard: "Is it me or anyone else who doesn't like hearing this dude talk?" one user remarked. "Gronk is just not good at talking ball I'm sorry he's funny when that's what matters but sometimes you gotta actually be able to break shit down," wrote another. "Gronk does not belong on an analyst desk. Idk why this is being forced," a third wrote. "Biggest downgrade in broadcasting history." "Horrible decision. If Captain Obvious and General Cliche had a baby, that'd be Gronk." "As a Pats fan I LOVE Gronk but he belongs nowhere near a microphone. He's awful." Many fans also believe that the network's continued employment of NFL legend Terry Bradshaw has also been making the show harder to watch: "Terry Bradshaw needs to call it a career too." "They gotta get rid of Bradshaw and Gronk is awful." "Why the hell don't they make Terry Bradshaw retire? It's definitely time." Do you think FOX made the right decision here? Rob Gronkowski lands major new TV role with Fox ahead of new NFL season
Rob Gronkowski is set become a full-time member of the 'Fox NFL Sunday' crew and replace Super Bowl-winning coach Jimmy Johnson on the show. Fox Sports and long-time football legend Johnson, 82, announced his retirement back in March after a long career spanning 60 years in and around the NFL. Fans had been eager to see which analyst would step up and join Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan, Curt Menefee, and Howie Long for the NFL pre-game show. Now, it's been confirmed that four-time Super Bowl champion Gronkowski has earned the call-up, after previously making a number of guest appearances on Fox. The show is entering it's 32nd season and fans are keen to see how the former New England Patriots tight end adjust to the new role. There had previously been rumors that Gronkowski was eyeing up a shock return to football - however the 36-year-old swiftly shut down those claims. 'Crazy bro,' Gronkowski told Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz . 'They must know something about me that I don't. I wish I still had those powers, because that would be cool if I did.' Gronkowski retired from the NFL the first time in 2019 and came out of retirement to play with Tom Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Since then, Gronkowski has been a Fox Sports analyst. The possibility of Gronkowski coming back to the NFL surfaced through which suggested he was interested in playing for the Broncos. Meanwhile, Gronkowski's predecessor Johnson opted to retire back in February after an impressive career centered around the NFL. Johnson spent over 30 years as a coach and front office exec in the league, before moving into the world of TV to spend another three decades with Fox. He has been a staple of the network's football coverage, and hinted at his retirement last month at the Super Bowl when he burst into tears live on air following a tribute to his career. The news was announced by Johnson himself on The Herd, as he told Colin Cowherd: 'I've made an extremely difficult decision.
