Jimmy Olsen SUPERMAN Spin-Off Series Reportedly Set to Introduce a Major DC Villain — GeekTyrant

The DCU is expanding, and one of its most unlikely heroes might be leading the charge in his own series. According to new reports, a Jimmy Olsen spin-off series is in development, and it could bring a classic DC villain into live-action for the first time in the new cinematic universe. We already know that James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and director of Superman , has confirmed multiple projects are currently in development beyond the initial Gods and Monsters slate. In fact, Gunn revealed that some titles were left out of the big announcement, and now we may know what a couple of them are. A recent report from The Wall Street Journal claims that two Superman spin-offs are 'being considered,' focusing on Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). The Jimmy Olsen project, however, sounds like it could be interesting.. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider's newsletter, the series is being envisioned as a crime anthology following Olsen as he investigates some of the DC Universe's most notorious supervillains. And it's reported: 'One of these villains will be none other than Gorilla Grodd.' The telepathic, hyper-intelligent gorilla who has long been one of DC Comics' most formidable villains might finally make his live-action debut in the DCU. While Creature Commandos featured an animated version of Grodd, this would mark his first official appearance in Gunn's interconnected live-action universe. Nexus Point News also chimed in, adding that Grodd is expected to show up in the very first episode if the series moves forward. While Gorilla Grodd is traditionally considered a Flash villain, he has crossed paths with Superman in the comics. His inclusion could hint at something bigger with the introduction of other metahuman characters from DC lore, potentially setting the stage for future crossovers and storylines. There's no official confirmation yet, and the project is still in the early stages, but the idea of a noir-inspired anthology starring Jimmy Olsen diving deep into the world of DC's rogues gallery? That's a concept fans might be able to get behind.

Jimmy Olsen spin-off series rumored to explore DC villains in crime anthology format

A new rumor suggests that DC Studios may be developing a spin-off series centered around Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo in the 2025 Superman film. The report, originating from insider ApocHorseman and shared via DCU Leaks on Discord, claims the series would take the form of a crime anthology. Each episode is said to feature a different villain from the DC Universe, with Olsen serving as the host and central narrator. The series would mirror recent successes like The Penguin, which built on Colin Farrell's portrayal in The Batman and earned critical acclaim and award nominations. This approach reflects DC Studios' growing focus on expanding its cinematic universe through character-driven spinoffs. Under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the studio appears committed to diverse storytelling formats and genres. Olsen, a fixture in DC Comics as Clark Kent's loyal friend and photojournalist, has starred in several titles like Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Known for his involvement in strange and adventurous plots, he has long been a beloved secondary character. In the 2025 film, Gisondo portrayed Olsen with a mix of classic charm and new elements, including a past relationship with Eve Teschmacher. His performance received praise for strong chemistry with the ensemble cast. According to the report, the rumored series would explore DC's criminal landscape through the lens of Olsen's investigative journalism. This concept aligns with Gunn's stated goal of blending genres and telling fresh stories within the DC Universe. While the series remains unconfirmed by DC Studios, its reported concept fits naturally within the studio's broader efforts to diversify storytelling under its Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate, which includes Superman, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and Clayface. If greenlit, the Jimmy Olsen series could offer fans a compelling new angle on the evolving DC narrative universe.

We Can't Get Enough of Jimmy Olsen in ‘Superman'

'What is going on with Jimmy Olsen?' I recently asked the stars of Superman. 'What is it about that guy?' 'He's got rizz,' replied Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Olsen's fellow reporter Lois Lane. 'This is a true fact about Skyler Gisondo,' Clark Kent himself, David Corenswet, added about the Olsen actor. 'Which I hope is appropriate to share. Sorry, Skyler… His testosterone is through the roof. Off the charts. True story. So of course, who is surprised that his Jimmy Olsen is pulling the kind of game that he's pulling?' Well, suffice to say, pretty much everyone was surprised, David. There are many delightful things in James Gunn's Superman but the mostly out-of-the-blue choice to have Olsen be an inexplicable, unstoppable ladies man is among the best. Over the decades, the Olsen character has been portrayed in many ways across various mediums. He's been a superhero. He's had love interests. He's done a little bit of everything. But the majority of the time, the character is a down-the-middle sidekick type. Clark Kent's nerdiest best friend and colleague. And, with the casting of the usually nerdy Gisondo (best known for his roles on The Righteous Gemstones and Booksmart), we all assumed that was Gunn's take too. But then Gunn introduces him, and we briefly see a photo on his desk with two attractive women. Which is a bit odd. Then two other young women who work at the Daily Planet flirt with him from across the room, almost entranced by his very presence. That's weird. Finally, when Lois Lane needs help finding Superman, Olsen goes into his phone and messages someone called 'Mutant Toes.' Clearly, 'Mutant Toes' is not a flattering description, and, from the previous texts they've exchanged, Olsen dumped this person pretty brutally. Our mind races to someone who looks like Doomsday. Nevertheless, 'Mutant Toes' gives Olsen the key information almost instantaneously in exchange for a meeting. And it's then we realize 'Mutant Toes' is Eve Tessmacher, Lex Luthor's stunning, statuesque girlfriend played by Sara Sampaio. Eve is, to put it bluntly, way out of Jimmy Olsen's league. And yet she acts like it's the complete opposite. She swoons over Jimmy. Begs him to hang out. Has fond memories of his mother, whom she met once. All of which he resists with borderline disgust. It's a dynamic that continues throughout the rest of the movie with often hilarious results. Then, ultimately, it's Olsen's relationship with Tess and her desire to rid herself of Lex that gives Olsen and Lois the key info to nail the supervillain once and for all. All of which is, almost certainly, my favorite throughline in the movie. It's just played so perfectly. We never learn what it is about Olsen that women find so appealing. He never flaunts this power he has over them. He's just good old aw-shucks Jimmy Olsen, who might be the most desirable man in all of Metropolis. A man who, when he walks down the street, sex workers fawn over like he's a celebrity. 'What is it about this guy?' Of course, we can speculate about that, which is half the fun. And maybe future movies (or even a TV show!) centered on the character will give us further insight. Honestly, though? I'd almost prefer to never find out. Let Jimmy Olsen be the ultimate player. Let the guy we assume is meek and nerdy be confident and cool on a level we rarely see. Looks can be deceiving. Instead, his superpower is swag, and it's as powerful as the yellow sun. Review – Superman #27: Red With Rage

Superman #27 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: Superman and Lex Luthor's complex truce has been the focus of this series since the start, but that's all over now. Lex is in the wind, and Superman is ready to take the gloves off when it comes to his former friend. There's just one problem – he's not in his right mind due to red kryptonite poisoning, Lex's old rivals Pharm and Graft are on the loose, and Marilyn Moonlight thinks Superman is a threat to the city itself. All these players on their own are pretty interesting, but together this issue feels like pure chaos. Marilyn in particular has a very interesting story, possibly being tethered to the city by some kind of curse. Seeing Superman out of control is a unique experience, but he's able to maintain just enough of his sanity to reason with her and facilitate a team-up – and once the extent of Lex's manipulations are revealed, you really can't blame Superman for being so enraged. Depowered. Via DC Comics. There's also a pretty great subplot involving Lois as she struggles to cope with the loss of her Superwoman powers. Jimmy Olsen is on the road to recovery, but Siobahn is still pissed towards Superwoman – whoever that is. I find it funny that no one seems to know who Superwoman was, given that Lois is a fairly famous figure and Superwoman didn't use any disguise while in costume, but such is comics. Where this issue excels is in the quieter moments behind the scenes. The giant robot Pharm and Graft drop on the city is exciting, but it can't quite equal the tension when Lex shows up to give Mercy a very significant choice. There's also an amazing segment between Superman and Lois at the very end – and that's before we get to the epilogue, which sets up the next big threat for Superman and the DCU as a whole. Excellent issue, as the Superman books continue to go three for three. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. GeekDad received this comic for review purposes. Liked it?
