Chinese woman expelled for casual sex with Ukrainian man, university cites ‘harm to national dignity'

A Chinese woman faced expulsion from Dalian Polytechnic University, located in northeastern China, for having a casual physical relationship with a Ukrainian man. According to the South China Morning Post, the university's decision came after several videos of the 21-year-old student suggesting an intimate relationship with the man emerged on social media. The report said that the University issued an official statement mentioning the student's name and cited the reason for expulsion as 'damaging national dignity.' The student reportedly had a casual one-night stand with a 37-year-old former Counter-Strike player while he was attending an event in Shanghai in December last year. The man posted intimate videos and photos of himself with the student in his fan group, calling her an 'easy girl,' the reports said. The incident sparked a debate. While several critics and social media users called the University's decision discriminatory, many demanded strict action against the student. The controversy ignited a discussion around personal freedom and gender bias in Chinese educational institutions, the SCMP reported. Jin Lin, a lawyer at Beijing's Xidong Law Firm, told mainland media outlet Fengmian News that the University's decision lacks legal justification, according to the report. Under the Provisions on the Administration of Students in Regular Institutions of Higher Education, there are only eight specific grounds for expulsion, none of which applies in this case. Several lawyers have recommended that the student take legal action against the university. In similar or even worse incidents involving male students, full names were seldom disclosed, and the disciplinary actions were often much lighter, the report said. The university is yet to address the backlash on social media.
