NMC removes illegal billboards across city
Nagpur: Despite the potential to generate crores in revenue from hoardings and advertisements, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) continues to falter in effectively regulating and monetising this segment. In a glaring instance of administrative apathy, the skysign department recently found that 281 out of 385 hoardings across the city were still active and have collectively defaulted on mandatory civic body fees amounting to a staggering Rs3.94 crore. In response, the department has started initiating action against such defaulters. Of the 281 live hoardings, 104 now face removal proceedings for non-payment of cumulative dues of Rs19.15 lakh. The civic body has also begun a wider crackdown on unauthorised displays and advertisements. Officials discovered several illegal shop boards mounted on commercial buildings without permission and a special campaign has been launched to remove such boards. "In one such case, the skysign department pulled down an unauthorised advertisement of M/s Pepsi Cold Drinks that was illegally erected on the wall of Blue Diamond Hotel near Dosar Bhavan Square on Central Avenue. The 20x10 feet hoarding was installed without the approval of the competent authority," said deputy municipal commissioner (revenue) Milind Meshram. A large hoarding placed illegally in front of Empress Mall was also removed as part of the ongoing drive. The special drive is being carried out by a special team led by a senior officer, Jitendra Tomar. While municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has set an ambitious revenue target of Rs9 crore from advertisements for 2025-26 fiscal, sources said achieving this figure may remain a pipedream unless illegal hoardings and shop signs are reined in. Many of these hoardings are not just illegal but are allegedly allowed to remain in place by zonal offices that turn a blind eye to ignore violations for reasons best known to them. Civic activists argue that this unchecked parallel economy not only robs the NMC of rightful income but also clutters the urban skyline and compromises public safety. "NMC's own officials are responsible for this mess. The hoarding sector has the capacity to generate major revenue, but due to deliberate negligence and internal complicity, the civic body is losing crores every year," said an official who did not wish to be named.

Delhi Fire Service conducts mock drill near Haj Manzil area to test emergency response
New Delhi [India], May 10 (ANI): A mock drill simulating an IED explosion was conducted near the Haj Manzil, close to the main gate under the Chandni Mahal police station area on Saturday, as part of a coordinated emergency preparedness exercise. According to Jitendra Tomar, Station Officer at Connaught Place Fire Station, the drill was based on a scenario where a distress call was received reporting an IED blast near Haj Manzil. 'As per the exercise, two individuals were reported injured. We immediately initiated relief operations and ensured the injured were sent to hospital services,' said the fire official. 'The drill was carried out as if responding to a real-life emergency to evaluate the coordination and response capabilities of the fire department and associated agencies. Such drills help us minimise our response time and prepare both officials and the public to react promptly and efficiently in critical situations,' Tomar added. The mock drill was part of routine safety protocols aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and public safety awareness in high-density areas. Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan, full-scale civil defence mock drills were held across the country on Wednesday to assess India's preparedness for emergency response. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday instructed all states and union territories to conduct drills to evaluate their preparedness against 'new and complex threats.' The drills were carried out across major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Gwalior, and Jaipur, focusing on evaluating local response capabilities to security challenges. These drills are critical in evaluating India's preparedness for handling complex security situations, providing essential insights into the nation's ability to respond swiftly and effectively. Several states also observed blackouts as part of the nationwide civil defence mock drills ordered by the MHA. Meanwhile, India has decided that any future act of terror will be considered an 'act of war' against India and will be responded to accordingly, the top government sources said on Saturday. Earlier in the day, amid the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces at his residence in New Delhi. The meeting took place following India's strikes at four airbases in Pakistan in the early hours of Saturday in reply to Pakistan's attack on 26 Indian locations. (ANI)
