Gudazi, 38, formerly from Adams Mission, won the national Jive Funny Championships in Cape Town last week. Gudazi, who works for Transnet, managing rolling wagon stock in the Eastern Cape, clinched the title at the Canal Walk Auditorium on May 14, where she delivered a quick-witted, three-minute set that left the audience in stitches. Out of over 100 hopefuls from across the country, she was named the judges' favourite, impressing comedy veterans Jason Goliath, Yaaseen Barnes and festival founder Eddy Cassar. 'I've always been the funny one in the room, even at work, where my boss started putting me in charge of master of ceremonies duties. That's where I found my confidence and eventually took the leap into comedy clubs.' The Jive Funny Championships is a national comedy search and social entrepreneurship initiative run by the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. Gudazi was one of only eight finalists selected to compete in the final round. Her victory means she will now perform at the prestigious Jive Cape Town Funny Festival from June 2 to 29 at the Baxter Theatre, sharing the stage with seasoned South African comedians and international variety acts. Along with national recognition, Gudazi took home a Canal Walk gift card, a Jive hamper and a trophy. Tickets for the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival are available via Webtickets. THE MERCURY

Are you ready to ROFL?

If the last few years of torrential rain have taught us anything, it's that winter in Cape Town is no joke. Unless, that is, you've bagged yourself a ticket for the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival! Now in its 26th outing, this month-long celebration of comedy and variety returns to the Baxter Theater from 2 to 29 June 2025, with a laugh-out-loud collection of local and international comedy talent. Two standout international acts are magician Charlie Caper, winner of Sweden's Got Talent, and Campagnia Baccala, the award-winning Cirque du Soleil clown sensation from Italy. They'll join a stellar local line-up, including Robby Collins, Kagiso Mokgadi, Alan Committie, Tumi Morake, Dalin Oliver, Emo and Loukmaan Adams, The Big Boys, and the newly crowned champion from the Jive Funny Championships which takes place in May. Founded by publicist Eddy Cassar in 1997, the Funny Festival celebrates freedom of speech and the vibrancy of South Africa's comedy scene. "We phased out importing stand-up comics from the UK and US as the local stand-up industry is thriving," says Cassar. "Our audience views the Funny Festival as a great night out." "Cape Town's biggest and best comedy event, the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival, never fails to bring laughter and smiles to many, many Capetonians," says Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. "And this year's program looks to be one of the best yet. I urge all Capetonians who love comedy and the lighter side of life to book their tickets early, and to come and enjoy a wonderful night out in the company of our country's funniest performers, along with some truly special international acts."
