Czech fatigue with Ukrainian refugees grows amid economic concerns
PRAGUE – Public fatigue with Ukrainian refugees is growing in Czechia, with 58% saying the country has taken in too many, according to a new survey by the STEM agency.
Still, support for their continued stay remains steady, with 52% in favour of granting Ukrainians asylum and 31% viewing them as beneficial.
'If the economic situation worsens, coexistence with Ukrainians could become significantly more complicated,' said STEM analyst Jiří Táborský, noting that opposition to immigration is closely tied to economic concerns.
The poll also found that 40% of Czechs say they tolerate Ukrainians but are tired of their presence. Among the respondents, 60% incorrectly believed that Ukrainians take more money from the state than they contribute.
Czechia currently hosts around 373,700 Ukrainians with temporary protection, the third-highest number in the EU after Germany and Poland. Per capita, however, Czechia ranks first with 34.3 refugees per 1,000 people compared to the EU average of 9.5.
