Johnny Depp Meets Tim Burton In Animated Clip From Burton Docuseries

A Tim Burton-style animated sequence recreates Johnny Depp's first meeting with the director in a new clip from filmmaker Tara Wood's upcoming Tim Burton Docuseries. Wood unveiled the first episode of the yet-to-be-officially titled four-part docuseries on the iconic director at the Tribeca Film Festival in June of 2024. The docuseries covers Burton's life and career from childhood through the release of his 2024 blockbuster Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Several of Burton's collaborators over the years are featured in the docuseries, including Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, Christoph Waltz, Mia Wasikowska and Jenna Ortega. Also featured extensively in the documentary is Wood's interview with Depp, who first collaborated with Burton on 1991's fantasy film classic Edward Scissorhands. In the docuseries, Depp said he was looking to escape from the fate of being typecast while working on the FOX series 21 Jump Street and knew he found his path when he read the screenplay for Edward Scissorhands. 'What I felt from reading that screenplay was … it had passed through everything, anything solid and went to the very core of whatever I am,' Depp said in the docuseries. 'The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose attacked me emotionally was that Edward was me … it's exactly what I should be doing.' See the clip of Depp (via JoBlo) below, where he describes the events leading up to his meeting and a Burtonesque animated sequence that details the fateful encounter. In Tara Wood's Tim Burton Docuseries, Johnny Depp shared some of the names of some of the A-list talent looking to play the title role in Edward Scissorhands and his doubts that he had of landing the role because of it. "Tim got calls from Michael Jackson saying (doing a Jackson impersonation), 'I'm perfect for the part, Tim, I can do him.' [He heard from] Tom Hanks. Everybody," Depp recalled. "Tom Cruise was not that far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands. True story.' Effectively, Depp said his thoughts were, ''He's never going to cast me. Everyone in Hollywood is after the part. Everyone.' He's also dealing with 20th Century Fox. Tim's really juggling because he's getting hit by his agent. He's getting hit by the studio. Everybody.' Even while Depp knew he was perfect for the role, he tried to back out of the meeting with Burton. 'So I called my agent after I read the screenplay and said, 'Just cancel the meeting. I'm not going.' She was like, 'Are you f---ing nuts?'' Depp humbly recalled. 'It was weird because there's always that bastard in your skull that goes, 'Come on, man. Hey, man. What are you nuts? You're on a TV show. You're a TV actor guy,' because at that time it was almost kind of either or.' Finally, I gave in and said, 'Alright, alright. I'll have a meeting with the guy.'' Wood hired world renowned artist Jim McKenzie to draw the animated sequence for Depp and Burton's fateful meeting. In a recent Zoom conversation, Wood said the sequence turned out exactly as she envisioned it, where Depp turns into several of his famed Burton characters right before the director's eyes. 'I worked very closely with Jim on it. I was very specific about how I wanted it to look, Wood said. 'I wanted to see Johnny turning into all the characters because I really wanted it to be like Tim seeing Johnny's future. Wood's four-part docuseries also includes interviews with several of Burton's filmmaking collaborators, including Rick Heinrichs, Danny Elfman, Denise Di Novi, Colleen Atwood, Allison Abbate and Derek Frey. Wood's Tim Burton Docuseries is seeking a distributor and is still awaiting a release date.

Warner Bros. responds to ‘disc rot' issue with its movie DVDs

Movie fans with a lovingly curated DVD collection might want to check the condition of any Warner Bros. discs in their library. It turns out that hundreds of DVD titles manufactured by the entertainment giant between 2006 and 2008 have succumbed to a long-known phenomenon called 'disc rot,' a deterioration in a DVD's condition that results in freezing, glitches, or complete failure during playback. DVDs that are properly stored and handled really shouldn't fall apart like this in such a short space of time, suggesting that a serious issue during the manufacturing stage has impacted these particular Warner Bros. discs. The good news is that the company has acknowledged the problem and is offering replacements — though not refunds — for affected discs. But only if the movie is still in print, and so long as Warner Bros. still has the rights to the title. In a statement shared by movie site JoBlo, Warner Bros. said it's 'aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs.' The statement continued: 'Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title. However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value. Consumers with affected products can contact the customer support team at whv@ The issue appears to affect a wide range of titles, including classic Hollywood movies such as Stanley Kubrick: Director's Series edition of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Superman movies up to Superman Returns, and popular TV series like Looney Tunes Collections and Batman: The Animated Series. While Warner Bros. is at least doing what it can to ease the irritation for customers, some folks' DVD libraries may be left with gaping holes through no fault of their own. JoBlo's Chris Bumbray, who brought the Warner Bros. issue to greater prominence in a report over the weekend, said that after testing some of his DVDs, he's now left staring at a bunch of 'expensive coasters.' Curious about how to convert your DVDs to a digital format? Here's everything you need to know.

Still Clinging to DVDs? Some Warner Bros. Discs Have Started Rotting Away

If you're still hanging on to your physical DVD collection, you could be in for a nasty surprise. Many DVDs manufactured by Warner Bros. between 2006 and 2008 have been hit by an issue known as "laser rot," where DVDs simply stop working due to a rotting of the layers, an investigation by movie review site JoBlo reveals. So far, it doesn't seem like Blu-ray discs or HD-DVD are affected. JoBlo highlights some of Warner Bros.' portfolio, including its Looney Tunes Collections or its portfolio of 30s, 40s, and 50s Hollywood classics, which were never transferred to newer formats like Blu-ray, meaning they could run the risk of disappearing without a trace. Though collectors have noted the problem in recent years, Warner Bros. recently acknowledged the issue following JoBlo's report and has offered to replace the impacted DVDs—but only under certain conditions. "Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title," read the official statement. "However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value." Warner Bros. encouraged consumers hit by the defect to contact its customer support at: whv@ If you'd prefer to avoid the potential trauma of malfunctioning DVDs altogether, check out PCMag's guide to converting your old discs to digital formats. The era of malfunctioning discs may well be nearing an end anyway. Many of the largest home entertainment chains in the US have already decided to cut or severely limit the number of DVDs they stock. Best Buy made the leap to stop stocking DVDs altogether in 2024, while Netflix shuttered its DVD business in 2023 after almost 30 years.

Netflix's ‘Zero Day' flops with critics despite Robert De Niro's star power

Netflix's highly anticipated political thriller Zero Day has failed to impress critics, debuting with a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite Robert De Niro's rare TV appearance as former U.S. President George Mullen, many reviewers found the six-episode series predictable and lacking in suspense. Critics have called Zero Day a missed opportunity. M.N. Miller of FandomWire described it as "contrived and rushed," while Alex Maidy from JoBlo's Movie Network lamented that it "wastes an all-star cast with a story bogged down by misdirections." The series follows Mullen as he investigates a deadly cyberattack but gets entangled in political conspiracies and his own troubled past. The ensemble cast includes Lizzie Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens, Angela Bassett, and Matthew Modine. However, The Daily Beast's Nick Schager wrote that even this impressive lineup couldn't save the show from being a "muddled, suspense-challenged washout." Not all reviews are negative. MovieWeb's Matt Mahler suggested that the show improves after its "horrible first episode." Collider's Shawn Van Horn praised its short six-episode format, saying it remains thrilling without dragging. Fans are divided, with some praising the acting and others calling it "one of the silliest things on Netflix." Zero Day is now streaming, allowing viewers to judge for themselves.
