Sheikh Joaan attends Olympic Refuge Foundation's Annual Board Meeting

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and a member of the Board of the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF), attended in the Foundation's Annual Board Meeting held on Monday at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Olympism365 – Sport for a Better World Summit, hosted by the International Olympic Committee to strengthen the role of sport in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee and Chair of the ORF and H.E. Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, alongside fellow ORF Board Members. During the meeting, members reviewed the ORF's 2024 Annual and Financial Reports, discussed the 2025 operational plan, and endorsed the Foundation's 2025–2030 strategic framework. The board also explored opportunities to expand sport-based programs for refugees and youth in host communities and adopted important decisions regarding the future of the Foundation's global initiatives. Sheikh Joaan's participation reflects Qatar's commitment to support the ORF efforts as the QOC has played an active role in supporting the ORF's work across strategic, financial, and operational dimensions—including hosting the Refugee Olympic Team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 also has delivered targeted sports and humanitarian programs for displaced Palestinian and Afghan youth and hosted the ORF Board Meeting in Doha in April 2024. Qatar's initiatives and its continued support for the ORF have contributed to the implementation of 14 sports programs across 10 countries, providing thousands of young refugees with the opportunity to engage in sport within safe environments. These efforts have contributed to the development of essential life skills and have positioned sport as an effective tool for empowerment and social cohesion in host communities. On the occasion, Sheikh Joaan reaffirmed the Qatar Olympic Committee's deep commitment to supporting refugee athletes and promoting sport as a tool for peace and social cohesion. He emphasized the importance of Olympic partnerships in broadening the humanitarian impact of sport across the globe. He further noted that Qatar's experience in leveraging sport to support humanitarian causes offers a practical model that can be expanded and enhanced. He reiterated the QOC's readiness to continue working with international partners to scale joint initiatives and create safe spaces where refugee children and youth can access sport and integrate meaningfully into their new communities.

Sheikh Joaan crowns Al Duhail as Amir Cup Handball Champions

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), crowned team Al Duhail as champions of H.H. the Amir Handball Cup for the 2024–2025 season, following their 29-27 victory over Al Arabi in the final held at the Duhail Arena on Tuesday. Sheikh Joaan presented the championship trophy and gold medals to Al Duhail players, and silver medals Al Arabi also honored the match referees and officials. The final was attended by H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General of QOC; Ahmed Mohammed Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association; Badr Al Dhiyab, Vice-President of the International Handball Federation for Asia, as well as several Gulf federation presidents and sports leaders. This marks the fifth Amir Cup title for Al Duhail, while Al Sadd holds the all-time record with eight titles.

In a touching national moment, the Qatari national anthem was played amid soft lighting and a backdrop of the flag, followed by a welcoming speech from Sheikh Joaan, who affirmed Qatar's commitment to organising global sporting events that reflect the spirit of cultural exchange and the advancement of the game. His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, conducted a field visit today to Lusail Sports Arena to assess the venue's readiness to host the upcoming World Table Tennis Championships – Doha 2025, which will take place from May 17 to 25. Sheikh Joaan was accompanied during the tour by Khalil Ahmed Al Mohannadi, President of the Qatar, Arab, and Asian Table Tennis Federations, and First Vice-President of the International Table Tennis Federation, along with members of the tournament's organizing committee. Lusail Sports Arena will serve as the main venue for the championship, hosting both the opening ceremony and the competition itself, which will feature 640 male and female athletes. The event will include 256 players in the singles competitions, 256 in the men's and women's doubles events, and 128 in mixed doubles. The Lusail Sports Arena, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators, previously hosted several major international sporting events, most notably the 2015 World Men's Handball Championship in Doha.

Tribune News Network Kuwait His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), hosted the Qatar national handball team on Monday morning in Kuwait, less than 24 hours after their landmark win in the 10th Arab Handball Championship. The 25–22 victory over Bahrain on Sunday marked Qatar's first-ever Arab Cup title in men's handball. The final was held at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex and capped a dominant run by the Qatari side, which completed the tournament with a perfect record. The championship, hosted in Kuwait from May 5 to 11, returned to the regional calendar for the first time since 2002, featuring nine participating nations divided across three groups. Qatar advanced from Group B after defeating Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 31–22 and edging Tunisia 31–30. In the semifinal, they overcame Egypt 25–19 before closing out the tournament with a hard- fought win over Bahrain. Sheikh Joaan commended the players and coaching staff for their discipline, consistency, and character throughout the competition, describing the performance as a point of national pride and a reflection of years of investment in the sport. Several emerging players were instrumental in the campaign, offering further evidence of the QOC's long-term commitment to athlete development. Joining Sheikh Joaan at the reception were Ahmad Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association; and Jassim Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General of the QOC. Handball has long been one of Qatar's most successful sports, and the Arab Cup title adds to a growing legacy that includes continental and global achievements. The victory in Kuwait was especially significant, not only for its historic nature but for the promise it revealed in a team that blended experience with rising talent. The return of the Arab Championship after more than two decades was seen by many as an important platform for regional competition. For Qatar, it offered both a trophy and a reaffirmation of the country's leadership in regional sport and its ongoing commitment to excellence on and off the court.
