QOC President meets Japanese Ambassador to Qatar

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), met on Thursday with H.E. Naoto Hisajima, Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar, at the QOC headquarters. The meeting was attended by H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary General of the QOC. The meeting reviewed the strong sporting ties between the two countries and explored ways to further develop and strengthen cooperation in the coming period. Discussions also touched on topics of mutual interest, including preparations for the upcoming World Athletics Championships-Tokyo 2025 and the 20th Asian Games- Nagoya 2026. The meeting also discussed the promising opportunities for exchanging expertise between the two friendly nations in the fields of sports administration and the organization of major events, building on the extensive experience both sides possess in this domain — most notably Japan's hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Qatar's successful staging of major world championships, including the recently concluded ITTF World Table Tennis Championships – Doha 2025. H.E. Sheikh Joaan reaffirmed the Qatar Olympic Committee's commitment to expanding international cooperation and knowledge exchange with friendly countries. He noted that the Qatari–Japanese partnership serves as a promising model for synergy in advancing the aspirations of the Olympic Movement and promoting sustainability and innovation in the sports sector at both regional and international levels.

Sheikh Joaan crowns Al Duhail as Amir Cup Handball Champions

H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), crowned team Al Duhail as champions of H.H. the Amir Handball Cup for the 2024–2025 season, following their 29-27 victory over Al Arabi in the final held at the Duhail Arena on Tuesday. Sheikh Joaan presented the championship trophy and gold medals to Al Duhail players, and silver medals Al Arabi also honored the match referees and officials. The final was attended by H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary-General of QOC; Ahmed Mohammed Al Shaabi, President of the Qatar Handball Association; Badr Al Dhiyab, Vice-President of the International Handball Federation for Asia, as well as several Gulf federation presidents and sports leaders. This marks the fifth Amir Cup title for Al Duhail, while Al Sadd holds the all-time record with eight titles.

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Senior Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), met with Seungmin Ryu, President of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC), on the sidelines of the ongoing ITTF meetings following the conclusion of the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships – Doha 2025 on Sunday. The meeting marked first official engagement between the two National Olympic Committees since Ryu's election earlier this year. A highly respected figure in international sport, Ryu brings to his leadership deep experience as both an Olympic champion and a long-time contributor to Olympic institutions, including his role as Chairman of the PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation. The leaders exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between Qatari and Korean sports institutions, with particular emphasis on Olympic development, legacy planning, and strategic engagement across both summer and winter disciplines. The conversation also reflected the shared ambition of both NOCs to deepen cross-regional partnerships and advance sport as a platform for long-term collaboration. In attendance at the meeting was His Excellency Jassim Rashid Al Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee. As two countries with growing global sporting footprints and complementary expertise, the meeting reaffirmed the value of sustained dialogue and institutional exchange between Qatar and the Republic of Korea, both as committed members of the Olympic movement and as strategic partners in sport.

The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the sports institutions of Qatar and the Republic of Korea, with a focus on developing the Olympic Movement, planning for a sports legacy, and expanding areas of strategic cooperation in summer and winter sports. Secretary-General of QOC Jassim Rashid Al Buainain attended the meeting.
