Stormers announce signing of schoolboy stars, Adams on way to Lions?

The Cape-based union have opted to invest in a number of local players. The Stormers have announced the signing of a number of promising schoolboy rugby players. The Paarl Gimnasium duo of centre Markus Muller and loose forward Quintin Potgieter, Rondebosch Boys High loose forward Alutha Wesi, centre Randall-John Davids and prop Matt van der Merwe, wing Jordan Steenkamp, hooker Altus Rabe and loose forward Gert Kemp from Paul Roos, Wynberg Boys flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed, Boland Landbou scrumhalf Jayden Brits and Grey College lock AJ Meyer have all agreed to join the Stormers next year. Director of Rugby John Dobson said that the contracting model is to look at local talent from the region first as a way to keep strengthening the pathway system which has seen the Western Province U21 team win two consecutive national titles, with many of those players going on to feature for the Stormers as well. 'This speaks to our aim as an organisation of harnessing the talent we have on our doorstep and strengthening the connection with our fans by contracting players from their communities to take our team forward,' said Dobson in a statement. Success stories 'We will still keep an eye on the most promising players from around the country and will make strategic acquisitions from outside the region if we feel they will make a big difference,' he added. Dobson said that this strong intake of local talent is extremely encouraging as the Stormers look to build significant depth by drawing on the best that the schools in the Western Cape have to offer. 'We have seen a few big success stories in recent years, with the likes of Damian Willemse, Salmaan Moerat, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, JD Schickerling and Suleiman Hartzenberg all coming through our system to become household names.' Lions look for comeuppance against 'bogey' team Ospreys

Lions prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has been included in the Springboks' second alignment camp later this month. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix When the Lions look back at their 2024/25 season, they will note with exasperation a number of matches that torpedoed their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign. Flying high at the start of the tournament with victories over Ulster, Edinburgh, Dragons and Zebre, there was a sense that something special was brewing at the Joburg-based outfit. Losses were expected, everyone agreed, but they would be quickly forgotten – the team now having enough experience and wherewithal to bounce back and mount a successful push for the Top 8. That charisma was certainly on display when they dispatched a Springbok-laden Sharks team at the beginning of March this year, winning 38–14; the match was proof positive of what this Lions team is capable of. It's unfortunate the URC saw so little of that version of the Lions. On the other side of the coin, damaging losses to Munster (17–10), the Bulls twice (35–22 and 31–19), Cardiff (20–17), Benetton (42–31) and Scarlets (32–19) will no doubt haunt the team when they reflect on their URC campaign. One could also include a December defeat to the Ospreys in the opening round of the EPCR Challenge Cup. The Lions were flat-footed and disjointed in that clash, with signs that their bubble had already burst after away defeats to Leinster and Munster on the preceding weekends. The latter was particularly disappointing – the Red Army were battling coaching upheaval and injuries, and were there for the taking, but the Lions failed to capitalise. They fielded a second-string side a week later against the Ospreys and, while they started with confidence, they were nonetheless outplayed 30–14. Although squad rotation was necessary and forgivable, the performance did little to instil confidence in the fringe players. Truth be told, the Welsh outfit have been something of a nemesis for the Lions in recent seasons. They were denied a Top 8 finish last season after the Ospreys narrowly beat Cardiff in the final round to snatch eighth place away from them. Both teams ended the regular season on 50 points, but the Ospreys had one more win. Moreover, the Lions have not beaten the Ospreys in their last three encounters, including a 38–28 loss at Ellis Park two seasons ago. Although the upcoming fixture is a low-stakes encounter, the Lions will be desperate to defeat the visitors for a measure of comeuppance, while also ending the season on a positive note as they look to the upcoming Currie Cup for redemption. 'The Ospreys have been like a bogey team for us,' Lions assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys admitted earlier this week. 'It will be a little bit of a consolation to do well this weekend. 'They are a good team,' he added. 'If you watched the game against the Sharks this past weekend – even though the scoreline doesn't reflect it – they are really tough at the breakdown. 'They are a physical team and they have a good kicking game. That's where we felt we fell short against them previously. We have those past experiences and will look to correct them this weekend.' The Lions will be further buoyed – and relieved – ahead of their final URC clash by the inclusion of several players in Rassie Erasmus' second Springbok alignment camp later this month. That list includes Renzo du Plessis, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Quan Horn, Morne van den Berg and Edwill van der Merwe. Kick-off for the match against the Ospreys on Saturday is 5.15pm.

Image: Facebook Last month, Joburg-based activist and businessman, Moreboys Munetsi had intervened to assist the family of the murdered man. At the time, Munetsi, a lawyer by profession, said he was providing legal support to the victim's family. On Wednesday, Munetsi told IOL that frustration is growing amongst Mahamba's family and friends, with days passing and there is no justice for the deceased. Munetsi said while Mugoya is on the run, some of his companies are still operating in South Africa. "The family of Emmanuel is very frustrated with the way the case is going, considering that there is no progress at all. It is alleged that some of his companies are still operating. This sounds as if he is still around the area. Previously, the police informed the family that the wanted guy was seen around Springs, but until now there is no update," he said. "To tell you the truth, the mobile phone of the accused person is still working, both on voice calls and on WhatsApp. Police should use their technology to trace him. Since his business is working, it means they should monitor all the transactions, that can help police to investigate. "The police should take more action on this case. The family is frustrated," said Munetsi. On his Facebook page, which has more than 144,000 followers, Munetsi previously held a live conversation with Ntombi, the woman who was involved in a relationship with Mahamba, while she lived with her other romantic partner, Mugoya. The Ugandan man, Mugoya, who has two children with Ntombi, allegedly murdered Mahamba in the bakkie attack. In the conversation between Munetsi and Ntombi, she referred to Mugoya as her 'baby daddy' and she also admitted that she had been in a relationship with Mahamba. 'I agree that I once dated Emmanuel in January, and we broke up in February. Yes, we were in a relationship. We broke up because some Ugandans recorded a video of me when I was with the guy (Emmanuel Mahamba). My baby daddy is a Ugandan. So I broke up with Emmanuel for my safety, for my kids and also for the sake of Emmanuel. I stopped talking to Emmanuel. Ntombi said on the fateful day, Emmanuel and some Ugandan men came over to her work premises. Emmanuel and the Ugandan men rented the same house. On the day, Mugoya was already at Ntombi's workplace, a shop where motorbike parts are sold. A woman, only identified as Ntombi, narrated how her baby daddy, a Ugandan national called Ali Mugoya, allegedly murdered her former boyfriend, Zimbabwean national Emmanuel Mahamba. Image: Supplied/Photogrid IOL 'Later on, I heard some noise, people fighting. When I went outside, I asked Emmanuel what he was doing, but he did not even respond to me; he only looked at me. He was holding a stone, and he threw it away. He picked it again and hit the vehicle's (wind) screen. That is when my baby daddy got angry, went to Emmanuel and beat him,' she said. In the video, Ntombi can be seen screaming, frantically trying to stop the Ford Ranger driver. Narrating how she fell in love with the deceased man, Ntombi said she met Emmanuel at Rivonia, Sandton, as he used to come to the shop that she works at, buying motorbike parts. She said when she met Emmanuel this year, she was still involved with the Ugandan man although the relationship was experiencing some 'difficulties'. Ntombi was living with the Ugandan man when she started dating Emmanuel. 'I had to date Emmanuel,' she told Munetsi in the Facebook live session. Ntombi has two children with the Ugandan man and the two have been in a relationship for around three years. IOL News
